  1. I have now moved forward on this and done some web searching and 'played' with the PRESET MANAGER which I had not noticed before. I selected CONTROLS > KEYBOARD > PRESET MANAGER > DUPLICATE and gave the new profile a name and found that all the keyboard assignments for the DEFAULT keyboard were then in that profile. I will now make my changes to the new keyboard profile knowing that if required I can delete it and go back to the default profile. I am yet to work out out how to set a keyboard profile as the default for the aircraft and can only assume the that whatever I choose (and highlite) becomes the default for that aircarft - yet to test that out. Thanks for pointing this out to me as I have yet to find instructions on the use of Preset Manager and what it is used for.
  2. Thanks for that. The mentioned something about setting up keyboard 'profiles' which I didn't quite understand (or was not explained clearly) but will go back and try and work it through. Is that what you mean't (ie setting up keyboard profiles) and if so can any particular profile be set as the default (ie MSFS2020 will always start using that profile)? After I posted/started this thread I also searched where my FS2020 is stored and navigated to the folder for the A320 (asobo-aircraft-a320-neo/simobjects/airplanes/asobo_a320_neo/ then subfolders such as model, panel, sound, sound.ai, and files such as aircraft.cfg) but I could not remember if I ever new which folder/file contained the keyboard data. I wondered if I could simply backup the entire subfolder (as above) BUT your idea is better. Thanks John
  3. I want to reassign some keyboard keys for quick views of specific instruments. I have watched a video which shows how that is done but note that often the keys have been assigned to something else for example a flight control surface. Which file(s) contain the keyboard mapping (key assignments) for an aircraft which I can backup in case I mess up the reassignments or just simply want to return to what they originally were. Thanks John
  4. The other day while selecting a departure airport I saw a display showing all the possible gates/parking bays to select from. Since then I have not seen this display and so when selecting departure gate you would need an actual map of the departure airport. How do I display the airport map again? Thanks
  5. I am thinking that both of your annoyances could be controlled in the settings for realism. Have a look in the ASSISTANCE section. I'm sure someone will know how to 'control' these things.
  6. Me too. I'm also 75 :) I hope that someone who can rectify this anomaly reads this.
  7. After procrastinating when to purchase given the problems some purchasers have reported since August I am now the 'proud' owner of MSFS2020. I haven't actually done a flight yet but have waded through all the settings, setting them to my preferences and recommendation from other people who have posted tutorial videos. The download procedure was easy leaving it to complete while I was asleep in bed so no idea how long it took only that it was less than 10 hours (my internet speed is around 52Mbps). So far there are TWO BIG ANNOYANCES. Firstly when I double click on the icon the start there is no 'busy' icon to suggest that the startup has actually commenced. I have never seen this before with any other application and at times thinking that perhaps I didn't double click correctly I have done it again only to be visually advised that it is already running! Secondly for some reason or other once it does start and displays the first 'screen' (can't remember if it has a name but the one which allows you to select World Map, Flight Training, etc) my mouse pointer has disappeared so selecting what I want to do is difficult. Today I found that if I left click anywhere on the screen the mouse pointer magically appears. Not sure if I have had this 'problem' with any other application. I would appreciate anyone commenting on this.
  8. Which folder should I select for the rolling cache path when I don't want to use the C: Drive as my D: drive (where FS2020 is installed) does not contain USERS\myname\APPDATA\? There are currently no folders in 'myname' folder. Should I manually create an APPDATA subfolder and if so what other subfolders eg LOCAL? BTW I did find information about the keys on my Logitech joystick and have now swapped the function of keys 1 and 5 as I prefer the BRAKE on the 'fire button' BUT is the Joystick configuration 'system wide' or must if be changed for every aircraft?
  9. Whoops I think I have found it. SLEW MODE - why didn't I remember that. and CUSTOM CAMERA 0 - 9 Save (CTRL + ALT + keypad number) Load (CTRL + keypad number) BUT are these views saved by aircraft (so that they can be different for each aircraft)?
  10. I am a newbie to MSFS2020 and have had a quick look at tutorials and documentation but have not come across this information hence the creation of the thread. Firstly I have found that using the 'arrow keys' I can 'pan' the camera view around the cockpit but that is from the pilot's eye position resulting in side views of say the overhead panel. Is there a method to move the camera position so that viewing say the overhead panel is as if looking at it from a 90 degree view (instead of say a 150 degree view)? Also can a particular view be assigned to a key on the keyboard so that the view can be quickly displayed without panning the camera? Is so what is the procedure? If this is 'covered' by an existing document please advise the location. Thanks John
  11. Just to advise that I have purchased and installed MSFS2020 but have no idea how long it took as I went to bed. Things I did NOTE though After starting the download/install I was then prompted where to install it SO anyone purchasing for the first time should note that they cannot simply start the process and walk away thinking that when they return it will be all done and ready to go. MS must download some 'config' files or similar before the main download. The download process displays the download 'rate' during download and I was getting mostly around 44 Mbps which is what my ISP advises as a 'typical download speed during the night. I only noticed this for a short time during the initial (short) download and the start of the main download (then went to bed) Now comes the learning process to know which joystick buttons do what and also keyboard keys. I will have to do some reading as running the first 'tutorial' just advises things like 'press joystick button 11' (which one is button 11 I wondered).
  12. Thanks everyone, I intend to purchase the Standard version. As I intend to purchase and start the download just before going to bed when I am usually tired and not thinking well I wanted to ensure there was nothing I had to think about. Thanks for the heads up on placement of cache. My D: drive (partition) is empty with a capacity of 427 - yes changing the drive for apps certainly added some folders and files totalling 428 MB. Should I change (windows) where to install apps back to C: once all set up?
  13. All I can find out is that if you want to have the installation download process (from the MS site) install on a different drive to the C: drive ( I want to use my D: drive) I firstly need to change the drive where apps are installed from C: to D: - (for Windows 10) press the Windows and I keys then select SYSTEM > STORAGE > CHANGE WHERE NEW CONTENT IS SAVED then select NEW APPS WILL SAVE TO and select D:. Firstly is that correct to ensure the download will install to my D: drive? Secondly are there any other things I need to do as I intend to purchase and start the download just before I go to bed? Thanks
  14. If I assume that a full download (when purchasing FS2020) is 127GB and using a download speed of say 40Mbps (my internet speed is usually 52Mbps) I have calculated the download time would be about 7.5 hours? BUT this is based on MY download speed and I have NO idea how fast the servers are where the download comes from? Reading from some people early after it was released it was terribly slow. What are people saying now? Has anyone purchased and downloaded it recently and if so how long did it take for them and what is their internet download speed? Thanks
  15. Thank goodness there are some people who seem to get a lot of enjoyment creating free addons at the 'expense' of using the sim to 'fly'.
  16. Just checked out the free (Sydney) scenery at flightsim.to Gob smacked is the term I was looking for. Thanks What gets me though is how quickly these 'addons' are being released. I used to be able to create good looking FSX scenery using satellite images, Google Sketchup, GIMP, Airport Design Editor and SBuilderX (the last 2 which made it fairly easy) but I wouldn't know where to start for MSFS scenery.
  17. I just noticed that ORBX has release its Sydney scenery update for MSFS but at a cost of $A19.99. Sure it (appears to) include lots of other buildings apart from the Harbour Bridge which MS could not even get close to resembling the real thing, its a pity MS couldn't get the bridge acceptable and do they intend to release an update including better Sydney scenery? I guess $A19.99 isn't too bad, and it looks very good, but I wished I didn't have that extra expense when most other countries most populous cities have been 'covered' ok.
  18. Hi Loki Even though I wanted it released as quickly as possible especially after seeing some of the early Yuutube videos thought that perhaps it wouldn't be released until maybe November and now wonder if they rushed the release. I can understand that they wanted some payback for development costs. I do hope that MS had some real pilots as alpha and beta testers. I hope the dreadful fires aren't affecting you. At present here in Sydney people are complaining about the smoke from burnoffs created by firefighters to help ease the possibility of more bush/forest fires in summer.
  19. My exact thoughts. Surely even just some of the problems uncovered since release were noticed during testing. I also wonder if MS gave each tester a test 'plan'. I was once a programmer/analyst and ALWAYS had to produce a test plan to be used during testing and each test 'ticked off', or maybe MS didn't know how to create an extensive test plan.
  20. Thanks for the recommendations. Yes I too know that Squirrel isn't the only person making great Youtube videos and it is always welcome to learn of others which are good as I have seen many so called tutorials some of which have NO vocals (terrible) and others which are not very 'fluid' suggesting the author isn't really familiar with what they are trying to do. Thanks again
  21. I just pulled up the following Australian military airports in Bing Maps and the runways are not displayed - Richmond RAAF base (YSRI) Amberley RAAF base (YAMB) HMAS Albatros (YJBY) Yet Williamtown RAAF base (YWLM) is displayed but that is probably due to the fact that it is shared with commercial operators. IMHO because of security and/or so that everyone doesn't consider them to be airports used by anyone.
