  1. Well overlapping areas is NOT the problem. I deleted the other area which was overlapping and attempted to download again and again FS2020 CRASHED to the (Windows) desktop so need to start FS2020 again. I turned off developer mode and set rolling cache to NO and deleted the rolling cache and tried again. Still it CRASHES Once again I ask IS THERE A LOG produced by FS2020? How can I REPORT this to ASOBO or whoever? Here I have an option to create a manual cache and I can't!
  2. Thanks everyone. Actually the 'penny dropped' last night after posting this and I wondered if my 'realism' settings might have an effect but didn't have time to check (yes the wheel is spinning but the hamster is NOT dead :) ). I haven't used the 172 preferring twin as in the Beechcraft King Air. Also had not noticed that the (elevator) trim was preset to takeoff position. That would account for the reason why the Beechcraft takes off by itself after I give 'two clicks' for trim UP which would be 'overkill' (should have checked the trim setting on the panel :( )
  3. Thanks everyone. I will start by turning developer mode off - I had it on to test something I found and at present don't need it on. Maybe I will get another 16gb ram but that will be my last resort. I have read somewhere about how 32Gb RAM is better than 16 but can't remember why. I know that MS state that 32Gb is the ideal system ram but don't know why. I will watch that video later and how that lags/freezes is covered as I am not particularly after a higher fps. I also was wondering if data cache settings might have an effect. I started creating manual caches last night for two different areas and ran into trouble (see separate thread regarding FS2020 crashing during manual cache creation.
  4. Tonight I decided to try out creating manual caches. I created a small one (1Gb) without problems. I then attempted to created a second cache of a nearby area and I have now tried twice both times FS2020 crashes to the desktop mid way through creating that cache. There is plenty of spare room on the SSD drive. I did notice later though that area for the second cache I am attempting to create overlaps the area of the first cache I created. Is this a no no? Should cache areas NOT overlap each other? I also have a rolling cache of 20Gb enabled. Is it ok to have both a rolling and fixed cache? I was able to create the first fixed cache without a problem. Is there a log somewhere which might disclose the reason for the crash? What else could be the problem?
  5. I have noticed that when using outside view of aircraft where the display is mostly the ground below and in front, that the display lags/freezes for a split second about every 10 seconds. I seem to remember that in FSX it was often reported that it was caused when the sim was reading more data from the drive. What is the most common reason for this happening with FS2020 and what can be changed to improve/eliminate this? I have developer mode ON Most graphic settings are HIGH Would in increasing RAM (from 16GB) improve/fix this? Would the cache setting help. I use automatic? I did a search of this forum and didn't notice any threads asking the same question.
  6. I noticed some time ago that when starting a new flight if the selected start position is on a runway, then the flaps are already extended to the first position (well for prop aircraft they are haven't checked other aircraft). When starting at a ramp etc the flaps are not extended. Is there any logical reason for this? Is there anything which can be done (settings) to prevent startup on a runway with flaps extended? Lastly is there an easy method to change the selected aircraft after selecting 'ready to fly' rather than having to press ESC, then wait, then select main menu and wait again and then having to load a flight plan again? I feel sure there was in FSX.
  7. Thanks for your reply. I had become confused when I mentioned a 4K monitor mainly I think because the first 32" monitor I found for sale online was a Samsung 4K and thought it was the next step up from 1080p. I will be 'aiming' at a 2K monitor with at least a 75Hz refresh rate, the more the better regardless of what fps I get (currently 30-40 with all settings HIGH). My shortlist has now been reduced to not include the MSI as my local PC shop now does not have them at any of their stores. Top of my short list now would be the Gigabyte especially as I have been using their motherboards and video cards since my first PC 20+ years ago with no failures yet.
  8. I always thought that monitors are best used in their native resolution. Have a look here and here Hope this answers your question.
  9. Thanks Steve. I WILL leave Malwarebytes installed as it doesn't annoy me but maybe I will leave AVG installed at least for a while IF I can work out how to not start it up with Windows as the pop ups particularly annoy me. I had a quick look at the settings and couldn't see how to do this so maybe it needs to go.
  10. Thanks heaps from everyone especially those who mentioned brand names as that is something I know nothing with only SAMSUNG which I have been 'sticking with' for some years now. I liked the screen shot of London which also showed some quite small 'text' on instruments which was clear. I am mainly upgrading as I think I need at least a 32" monitor as I am having problems with small 'text' of the PFD of the Beechcraft KingAir (altitude and VS settings especially) My short list of monitors is - AOC AG323 QCXE (32" 2560 X 1440) 144Hz 550nits GIGABYTE G32QC (32" 2564 X 1440) 165Hz 350 nits MSI Optix G32CQ4 (32" 2564 X 1440) 165Hz 250 nits with preference for the first 2 as the MSI doesn't seem to have any height adjustment. I am to unfamiliar with any of these brands in monitors but consider that AOC and MSI might specialize in monitors (I though that Gigabyte's 'forte' was montherboards and video cards) and as such might be better at developing monitors. They all offer 3 years warranty. I also appreciated your thoughts on curved monitors as from the time they first came out I could not understand how they could be better than a flat screen but maybe with the larger screen such as 32"
  11. Thanks everyone for your information. I have been thinking of 'ditching' AVG for some time mainly because of all the popups it produces and now will definitely uninstall it and rely on Microsoft defender. I have to admit that because years ago when I was not careful my PC (probably Windows XP) at the time became infected with a virus and nothing would remove it so I ended up reformatting and reinstalling everything again which took forever. Even now EVERYTHING I download I pass through Malwarebytes (free version) MANUALLY even with AVG installed. Hey I thought that Defender was a firewall not an anti virus app.
  12. Great reply loki - thanks Now all I have to decide on is a flat or curved monitor and I am thinking that with a 32" monitor viewing at no more than 24" away a curved one might be better.
  13. Thanks loki. Sorry I was getting things confused. NO I would not necessarily want a 4K monitor (4 X the pixels of the 1080p) and I think 1440p (1.6 x pixels of the 1080p) in a 32" monitor would be good enough and reasoned that I need better than 1080p for a larger screen for sharpness. I will consider taking a 1080p screen shot on usb to my local store and compare 27" and 32" but would expect it to not look so good on a 32" monitor. Will my 6GB video card be 'up to' a 1440p screen without too much drop in fps? Do you think that I would noticed any difference with FS2020 on a monitor of 75Hz compared to one at 140Hz? I have been advised that faster Hz results in smoother animation.
  14. Thanks, A new video card adds at least $A600 (the cost of the monitor is $A600) which tips me over what I can currently afford. Maybe I can get the 4K monitor and if it affects fps too much use it at resolution 1080 until I can afford a better video card. My first consideration is simply to upgrade from a 27" to 32" monitor and many are the same resolution as my 27" ie 1920x1080 but surely the sharpness would not be as good as 2560x1440. Here I am thinking of the altitude and VS speed settings on the PFD which are very small and difficult to read unless I zoom in close. Consider the following image of the pfs and auto pilot panel both of which needs to be displayed when setting required altitude and VS - the VS is marked with a red arrow and if VERY small. Is there something different I can do to set ALT and VS. Currently I get around 30fps from 'pilots view' and 40fps over Sydney Australia with the following settings. What could I expect with a new video card with 8gb vram and everything else much the same as my current card using it at 4K? Lastly is 75Hz fast enough for FS2020?
  15. Actually I don't know why I still have AVG installed as I also have Malwarebytes protecting my PC.
  16. I have a 27 inch Samsung monitor with a resolution of 1920X1080 and a refresh rate of 60Hz. As much of the information on the PFD (Beechcraft King Air) is very small and I struggle to see it clearly (yes I know that I can zoom in) I am considering upgrading to a 32 inch monitor as everything will then be slightly larger. After speaking with a salesperson it seems that resolution plays an important part in how sharp the image is and the monitor I am considering is 4K (2560X1440). Does screen resolution always affect sharpness of the image or are there other things to consider? The salesperson also stated that the refresh rate affects the smoothness of movement but apart from outside scenery is this important with FS2020? I believe that higher resolution also affects refresh rates/fps as the video card has to work harder. Mine only has 6GB Vram - could this be a problem? Lastly does anyone have any opinions on MSI brand monitors (I have never heard of them before)?
  17. Thanks Steve I really didn't think that there would be a threat with a MS product but I was once 'stung' so badly (years ago) that I ended up having to reformat and reinstall everything.
  18. I have just downloaded and installed the latest update (21GB). When it finished AVG virus protector reported the following Has anyone else had similar? What should I do, create an exception and allow 2020 to run?
  19. That makes me wonder if there is a fault with the 'lid' on the cpu. The 'lid' is the metal part you see on the top of the cpu which the cooler sits on and contacts to take heat away. There have been reports on other (not the 10700) intel cpus a year ago or more where they did not have enough paste between the 'die' (the actual cpu) and the lid and there are special tools available to 'delid' cpus so that extra paste can be installed between the die and the lid. I think that the 10700 might be actually soldered (the 8700 and 9700 are) and perhaps the soldering does not completely cover the 'die'. Consider taking the PC back to where you purchased it and get them to do a 'stress test'. Take your figures to show them what is happening. With temperatures like you are getting maybe the best of coolers will not work effectively.
  20. Of course you didn't. It took me some time (in the 6 pages of replies) to find the exact case being used (name not a link) and indeed 'cpu clearance 160mm'. What a nice case too and lots ventilation and fan mounting spots. David you now know what to buy and install.
  21. The Cooler Master 212 Evo V2 is 155mm tall. Check out your case as loki has heaps of good knowledge. Check out how far it is from the top of the cpu and the case. If more than 155mm it should fit. The specs for the 10700 are here I don't quite understand why your cpu temperature is so high as my cpu is an i7 9700K and runs at 3.6Ghz with 8 cores and 9 threads. The temperature when not doing anything is less than 40C. The 10700 runs at 3.8 (not much faster) also has 8 cores but has 16 threads. Have a look at which mentions that the 10700 got to 100C and that it is a hot cpu.
  22. I would not think that a desk fan would make much difference if any. I just had a quick look at my local PC dealers website and noted the Noctua NH-D15S is 165mm tall and all the other similar types are much the same height so you are limited to either low profile coolers or a water cooler. The low profile coolers are a lot cheaper and while they don't cool nearly as effectively as the vertical ones they probably are better than the stock one. Check out what is available in low profile coolers even if you only drop the temperature 10C to 80C. According to the web the Noctua NH-U12A is only 7mm shorter than the one your tried so probably still too tall. The other option is a water cooler and some are much the same cost as the Noctua. A small part sits on the cpu with pipes to the core and fan which is mounted on the case.
  23. Never thought of that especially as we here in Sydney have not had temperatures like that this summer and had forgot how how it can get. We are having a very cool summer with average temps around 10C below average. Also have to take into consideration airconditioning (which I have) which has my PC environment at a max of 24C. So aircon has to be factored in too.
  24. I agree with that unless it is OC'd and the Noctua NH-D15S looks awesome. Make sure you post the results.
  25. It could be that some of the cores are doing more 'work' than others. I don't think that each individual core has the same throughput. Also if I remember correctly CPUs will 'throttle' back when getting too hot to protect themselves. Have you checked how much power the CPU is drawing and if it constantly draws the same? The more power it draws the hotter it will get. I read that it is normal for the 10700 to 'pull' 225 watts for up to 30 seconds and then drop back to 65 watts BUT if when it drops back to 65 watts the temperature remains high then the cooler and/or its mounting is not doing its job. Have a look at here
