  1. I was "Lucky," back when I was flying a lot they really qualified needed butts in seats to send to Vietnam. So the powers that be were reluctant to do more than verbally beat you up. Calls to the tower or even early 02:00 or 03:00 morning butt busting from a base C.O. for breaking some silly rule really didn't carry the weight they otherwise would have. I mean what could they threaten you with? Getting sent to Vietnam to get shot at?? Their fear is they wouldn't be able to send you to Vietnam to get shot at.
  2. I was referring to your comment about the phone call from the tower. RW: I racked up a bunch of "CALL THE TOWER!" messages over a period of years, and they always involved threats. And yes, it was always because I was accused of doing something in flight that they wished they had the nerve to try to do themselves. And for the hugely most part, their accusations were correct.
  3. Threaten. That's what those who wish they had do, instead of actually doing anything! It's a world wide annoyance. BTW: Great paint on the Spit! Rupert
  4. After time at MCAF Santa Ana and El Toro in the 60's, I tend to agree. It was often a real bear to drive home after Night Flying From Santa Ana when the fog was heavy! I once drove about a block on the wrong side of a large and high highway dividing median before I noticed the railroad crossing gates I spotted were on my left side rather than the expected right!! TBTG the locals stayed home that night!! However I still have fond memories of San Diego. As long as you don't venture too far on the south. And who, other than Navy Seals, can ever be unhappy when visiting "Admirals Island?" (Having said that, I much preferred it before they built the bridge!)
  5. I love the P-40! Though they are all sweet! And no one should be able to resist any Spitfire.
  6. Sad to say I'm not good at remembering the ramps and such of most commercial airports. Including most that I've flown into myself, much less been flown into. Having said that, as usual your sots are always great and a joy to see. Thanks Darryl!
  7. GREAT COMMENT!! And as far as I can tell GA Conversion is alive and well in Ky. I know several pilots for DHL and other airlines, as well as the Air National Guard, who own or fly GA aircraft on their off-time. In fact a friend of mine, who recently retired from DHL often commuted from his farm in central Kentucky to work at CVG in his Piper.
  8. I agree. That's as good a freeware site as I've found.
  9. Mean Looking regardless of paint! Well done!
  10. I agree on both counts. Though sad to smog is probably a more apt description these days than the haze which always blanketed the area, hence the term Smokies. And yes, I'm also a huge fan of the Dash! It's right sized and right powered for the job it does.
  11. I was really fond of Sky's Beechcraft. But I really lusted for his niece Penny!! Come to think of it at that age I really lusted for almost every teenage girl!
  12. What a wonderful remembrance! We have been lucky to visit the Cenetaph while in London more than once. This old US Marine chopper pilot has also blessed to visit many airfields from the Battle Of Britain. Where I always paid my humble respects! My father who lived in Scotland during WWII but due to a missing an arm due to farm tractor incident was not eligible to fight there came to the US after the war was over. He instilled in his children the need to defend our country and our rights! Though my father died in 1954 my brother and I both became US Marines and fought in Vietnam. He was in infantry and I flew H-34s and H-46s. My sister married a US Marine infantry Vietnam Veteran after he was disabled and sadly is now dead. So yes, even though my Marine combat veteran brother and brother in law are now dead I was thrilled and honored to play Taps at their funerals in my clan correct kilt! And I now represent them and the Corps on yet another Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day. (Armistice Day in the UK) where my wife and I have spent time visiting my blood relatives who still live near Fife in Scotland.
  13. Well said! I certainly will never forget the brave men I was honored to serve with especially those who died from their wounds! Having said that I want to add Happy Marine Corps Birthday to all the Marines and a prayer for a peaceful and Happy Veterans Day to all who serve/d and to the families that wait/ed for them! Michael
  14. I've made a couple of winter voyages to or from Southampton on the Queen Mary II. To save fuel they take a pretty northern (direct) route to and from New York City. Having read various accounts and seen the movie Titanic, I was never truly comfortable at sea on those trips, especially after dark. And dark comes truly early that far north in winter!!
  15. Beautiful shots! Having said that, that weather isn't something I look forward to. Michael
  16. +1! If you truly mean to sim it, you should try to duplicate ( or simulate) living it. And while living it, we don't have sliders.
  17. Thanks, I've been in that area RW when we toured various WWII locales a few years back. Now I'll have to "fly" there and take a look see.
  18. Great shots as always. And yes the smog near LAX is almost always a sad constant.
  19. Great shots Darryl! I always get a kick out of the various Frontier tail logos!
