ColR1948
Hi Jethro, I think I had it right in the first place with just the 6 pin like pic 1. It ran everything else OK, it was just me getting desperate looking for other things. The old power PSU packed in and it wasn't that old, my Grandson built the PC for me, it was EVGA 500W, another story I contacted them about it but they said it was out of warranty going off the serial number, but like i said that is another story. I did update my drivers from the Nvidia website, but like i said earlier, everything else runs fine except FSX. I've seen threads like this before where the op has tried this and that then someone comes on and says they had that problem just do (this) and that solved it, probably something very simple staring me in the face. jorgen.s.andersen
The video card can run DX11, FSX uses DX9 with DX10 available as a preview option. Try this: put a backup of FSX.cfg somewhere safe, then delete the original file. Start FSX, and it will generate a new file for you. You will then have to manually add in any modifications that you made, but there also now should be one [DISPLAY.DEVICE] entry. Jorgen
ColR1948
hi Jorgen, Yes I did that a few times, each time I click on the start it brings up the opening logo page then the popup appears in a matter of seconds, I can never go any further, the sim closes down. jethrom
Hi Col, Because you aren't able to start FSX beyond the Splash screen before the error appears this is the critical moment when a new cfg is created therefore yours is continually corrupted. I Had a look at your fsx.cfg entries, I have made 3 alterations. Backup your existing fsx.cfg to a safe folder, perhaps on your desktop. Then download the attached file below, change its file extension to .cfg then copy paste it into your C:\Users\your user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX overwrite existing config start FSX, see what happens this time. These are the items that were altered/modified Added HIGHMEMFIX=1 to [Graphics] Added [VisualFX] WindowPos=0,0 AlwaysOnTop=0 Removed entire un-needed corrupt entry [DISPLAY.Device.Nvidia GeFoce GTX 1050 Ti] Mode=1024x768x32 TriLinear=1 Attachment: Modified fsx.cfg for Col
ColR1948
Jethro, I really appreciate all the time and trouble you have gone through to try and help me mate. I did as you suggested above with the amended fsx.cfg, but again the same result, I'm sorry I really wish it had worked. It's looking more like a fresh install, I'm dreading it, I have a lot of Orbx scenery plus my own painted aircraft plus flight plans. I know I can save the aircraft and plans to a folder but I'm not sure about the Orbx scenery, it took almost a whole day to install it all, I did read if you leave the addons in place and just delete FSX when it re-installs some of those addons may not work. jethrom
You're welcome Col, You know when the advice slows to a trickle that the inevitable is waiting. Reinstalls are never fun, but they can be an excuse to leave out (not install) addons you either don't use anymore or that cause instability. Use the "uninstall a program" from Windows Control panel, this is the recommended method, there is a very good article written up on the PMDG forum of the most effective way of cleansing your system of a broken FSX install, https://support.precisionmanuals.com/kb/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx Be sure to Run FSX at each stage of reinstall, including AccPack, make sure activations have been accepted, then make Slider adjustments and settings to your liking, then go for a short Fly before moving on for addon installations. Check the sim is operating properly, however bland in default, satisfy yourself that everything is A-OK then proceed with addon installation. Either way you have a fresh starting point. Orbx installs are mostly automated now so beginning with FTXCentral you will likely already have migrated your software, then little by little you can reinstall Orbx. As for other addons if they require interaction with the Windows registry then they must be reinstalled from scratch but if they are simple extractions then they can be reinstalled from backup, but for aircraft you need to keep in mind things like Effect & Gauge file's. If it were me I would install all of these from scratch and then add back things like extra liverys and modifications. Things like Flightplans are a no-brainer they are easily restored from backup as long as the aircraft and scenery area they were saved with have also been reinstalled, otherwise you may get an error message about unable to load xyz if something is missing. Kind Regards Jethro
ColR1948
Thanks Jethro, I had to do a fresh install a while ago, I also used a program 'search everything' I think it's called, I typed in FSX and it searches your PC for every possible entry, it found lots of hidden stuff within folders that you wouldn't suspect. It was a long process of the install, not just FSX but all the addons plus scenery etc, like in my other posts FSX was running fine with no problems. They usually say look at the last thing you changed before the error, well the last thing I did was add another aircraft but the sim ran for a couple of weeks with it so I doubt it was that but I did remove it just in case but it wasn't. On a side issue my grandson keeps telling me to get P3D, I looked at it, I think I would only need the academic license if I did get it. I know a lot of FSX aircraft will port over, not sure about scenery though. Col.

Don't listen to ANYONE who tells you they `port over`. Clearly they don't know what they're talking about. Unless they're talking about an obsolete version of P3D... And read the EULA to see whether you qualify. It is forbidden to be discussed here.
jethrom
Hi Col, P3Dv4.3 might seem like the answer, but that will depend on your hardware and expectations. If you go along that route, and have high expectations without upgrading your hardware you may be disappointed. I only say this because looking at your fsx.cfg your settings were fairly low to moderate, I can only gauge that was due to hardware limitations. All the very best which ever route you take. jethrom
Hi Col, Could you please run Dxdiag and take a picture of the "System tab" I'm interested to know what the tool is reporting for "Memory". If it is showing less than 32Mb we may have found a hardware problem. Or bios setup issue potentially regarding PCIe x16 slot and/or vram on the Graphics card. Are we sure the card is seated properly in the slot. Could you also check the Graphic card documentation for supported shader version (minimum v1.1 is needed for FSX) yours should have v6.1 which more than meets FSX requirement. Interesting read below which pretty much follows with trouble shooting throughout this thread. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/925722/troubleshoot-graphics-issues-in-flight-simulator-x Specification for your GC https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/asus-rog-strix-gtx-1050-ti-gaming-oc.b4225 Cheers Jethro

jethrom
Hi Col, Well that looks OK to me, 16384Mb same as mine, taking into account the reported total VRAM on the earlier Dxdiag Graphics tab was 3688Mb - 3.7Gb (effectively) That's plenty more than 32Mb Vram FSX shows in the requirements. Shaders are fine according to specs. I am stumped, but will continue researching, don't know what to recommend next. Perhaps if you have another suitable GC, maybe try that, it only needs to meet minimum requirements for the test.
ColR1948
Jethro, if the card wasn't seated properly wouldn't the other things not work as well, like FS9 and X-Plane?

jethrom
No that's not going to solve the issue on this computer, Different hardware different software different MS updates. FSX will likely run just fine on that computer. I still think the issue is with WDDM Graphics driver MS Updates. Could you go into your list of installed updates and search specifically for "WDDM 1.1 1.2 1.3" Here's a pic from my Dxdiag, note the WDDM 1.1 version and date is much older than yours. tiger1962
I think Jethro is on the right track with the possible nVidia driver issue - the original error message mentioned "video hardware or driver". Col, here's my Dxdiag Display page, I'm also running FSX on Win7 (x64) with an nVidia 1050Ti 4gb: If yours looks any different, especially the WHQL logo part, this could be the source of your FSX problem. I always uninstall my old nVidia driver using the nVidia Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from guru3d.com: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html I always install the latest nVidia driver from the nVidia Drivers website. From my experience, this is the best way to install nVidia drivers properly and without issues. Edit: In fact I'm going to update right now, a new driver was released on 8th November.
