   FS2004/FSX Curtiss P-40M And P-40N

   FS2004/FSX Curtiss P-40M And P-40N. The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was undoubtedly one of the most controversial fighters to serve in quantity during the Second World War. The P40M was a P40E with a more powerful Allison engine, lengthened fuselage and minor other improvements. The P40N, was the final production model. The P-40N featured a stretched rear fuselage to counter the torque of the larger, late-war Allison engine, and the rear deck of the cockpit behind the pilot was cut down at a moderate slant to improve rearward visibility. A great deal of work was also done to try and eliminate excess weight to improve the Warhawk's mediocre speed. Early N production blocks dropped a .50 inch (12.7 mm) gun from each wing, bringing the total back to four; later production blocks reintroduced it after complaints from units in the field.     FS2004/FSX Curtiss P40E/F. The Curtiss P-40 was undoubtedly one of the most controversial fighters to serve in quantity during the Second World War. It was praised and abused, lauded and vilified, but the fact remains that, as the first American single-seat fighter to be manufactured on a mass-production basis, it bore much of the brunt of the air warfare over several battle fronts. Its performance was inferior to the performances of the majority of its antagonists, but this shortcoming was partly compensated for by its tractability and its sturdiness which enabled it to withstand a considerable amount of punishment. It was amenable to adaptation and it was available when most sorely needed. Gmax model by A.F. Scrub.

Bought by Group Captain Allen H Wheeler in 1946 and was raced for a number of years. Sold to Vickers-Armstrongs in 1955 and repainted in camouflage as AB910. Donated to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in 1965 she is still airworthy. Repaint by Peter Watkins.

    FS2004/FSX Vought Corsair F4U-1 "Birdcage". The F4U-1 "Birdcage" Corsair was the first in a long line of successful derivatives of the Corsair used in front-line service. Early Corsairs displayed undesirable landing characteristics including the port wing dropping at landing speeds and a tendency to bounce after landing. Ironically, these problems meant that the US Navy initially considered the Corsair unsuitable for carrier operations. Early Corsairs were therefore issued to the Marine Corps for land based use. Most of these operations took place on the Solomon Islands. Guadalcanal was the first place for the birdcage canopied Corsairs to see action. Gmax model by A.F. Scrub.
