The Curtiss Twin JN, also known as JN-5 or Model 1B, was an experimental twin-engined two-seater observation biplane built by Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for the United States Army Air Service. The design was a modification of the famous Curtiss JN-4 'Jenny' biplane, with an enlarged wingspan and the tail of the Curtiss Model R-4 amongst other modifications. 21. FS98 Santos Dumont Demoiselle 1908

FS98 Santos Dumont Demoiselle 1908. The first aircraft to be built for sporting purposes, and the first ultra-light aircraft in history, built by the Brazilian engineer Santos Dumont, with a gross weight of 314 lb. It was a single-seater, high-wing monolane, powered by a 35 hp, 2-cylinder Darracq engine mounted on the leading edge of the wing, capable of speeds of 50 kt. Lateral control was achieved by wing-warping, and tailplane and rudder were a combined unit, moving on both axes. The Demoiselle was a simple, very successful design, the world´s first series production aircraft. Several flyable replicas were built by Personal Plane Services Ltd for the 1965 film 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines', and others have been built since then. By Stephan Scholz.

According to pilots' reports, it was a stable design, viceless and easy to fly. As before, lateral control was by wing-warping. Powered by one 35 hp Green C.4 engine, it flew at 42 knots. It participated in several races and cross-country demonstration flights. Seven units were built. By Stephan Scholz.

  23. FS98 Avro Roe-IV Triplane 1911

FS98 Avro Roe-IV Triplane 1911. The last and without a doubt the most famous of the initial Avro Triplane series built by Alliot Verdon Roe, the founder of Avro. A fully flying replica of this charismatic triplane was built for the 1965 film "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines". As the predeceding Roe-III, this model fitted the more powerful 4-cylinder water cooled 35 hp Green engine, but had a conventional, non-carrying tailplane, and a smaller rudder. Also, despite previous success with ailerons, this design reverted to wing-warping for lateral control. The wingspan was slightly increased to 32 ft, and the length to 30 ft, and it was the basis for the successful Avro biplane designs that followed. Only 1 unit was built, as Avro was already developing the Avro-D biplane. By Stephan Scholz.

  24. FS98 Avro Roe-III Triplane

FS98 Avro Roe-III Triplane, 1910. The successor to the Roe-II Triplane was built by Alliot Verdon Roe, the founder of Avro. As its predecessor, this model was powered by the more powerful 4-cylinder 35 hp Green engine, and flew in Brooklands in 1910 at a speed of 35 knots, and had the sturdier airframe, but pitch control only involved pivoting the entire tailplane, the mainplane incidence remaining fixed. Lateral control was improved by moving the ailerons from the top wing down to the mid-wing ailerons, and the tall, large rudder was also retained. The landing gear was further strengthened, now fitted in Farman style with four wheels instead of two. 4 units were built. By Stephan Scholz.

  25. FS98 Avro Roe-II Triplane

FS98 Avro Roe-II Triplane, 1910. The successor to the Roe-I Triplane, the "Mercury", was built by Alliot Verdon Roe, the founder of Avro. This model was powered by a more powerful 4-cylinder 35 hp Green engine, and flew in Brooklands in 1910 at a speed of 35 knots. It had a sturdier airframe, and pitch control was improved by pivoting the entire tailplane, being linked to the mainplane variable incidence gear. Wing warping was abandoned, instead of which a pair of large ailerons fitted to the top wings catered for lateral control. The rudder was also taller, with twice the surface. By Stephan Scholz.
