  1. Hello everyone, We've all seen the claim repeated that the sim only uses one core. Today I had the perfect demonstration of it using all four of mine rather well and figured I'd share it here. Granted, this is in DX12 mode, which I understand uses the hardware differently. See the two screenshots below of Task Manager; specifically how it reports CPU usage by program and also per core, on the second image. You can click on the images to enlarge, if it's too small. All this is not to say that one thread won't dominate the CPU time - that would be the main thread that runs the show. Those of us that are CPU limited (like I frequently am) are then limited by the CPUs capacity to process the main thread. But there ARE other threads constantly working, and they are juggled by the various cores of the CPU. And yes yes, I know it looks funny seeing a mere 4 core / 4 thread CPU in 2022...give me a break, haha.
  2. I've been away from the sim for a few months. I've now found that the replay tool has seemingly moved - it's not in Dev mode anymore. To get to it, activate the option in the "Experimental" section, within the general options menu. That will then automatically add a reply tool shortcut to the top menu. See this guy:
  3. Thanks msduf! I'll check it out. What's the impact on performance? I've bought scenery before, only for it to bring my geriatric CPU to it's knees. Incidentally, my wife and I went skating at the Shearwater rink on Saturday night!
  4. I've seen the same. I took a forced break from FS for about six months, and now that I'm back, I can swear it looks worse. I actually thought it's my internet (which is now slower). At least it's good to know that it's not on my side. Although my beloved Halifax received PG in the Canada update, it looks pretty bad up close. That said, it looks passable from 200 ft upward, when travelling 100 kts and above. So I've made peace with the fact that PG is purely for flying over and not to be focussed on.
  5. Hi Miahflyer, I used a 970 for flightsim for about a year and a half. I think it worked well and is quite underrated. You may not be able to use DLSS, but AMD FSR 2.0 is an option for you. Despite it being from AMD, it's open source and useable on nVidia cards, like your 970. I use it on my 1660 and I think it's better than TAA: better visuals AND better FPS. I use the quality FSR present, but you may need balanced or performance. The caveat is that you need to use the DX12 beta to get that option. But see how it works on your 970, you can always switch back to DX11 and TAA.
  6. Maybe this is not applicable to you, but just in case it helps: Using active pause, keeps the game world going, but freezes your plane in place. Importantly, your engine also keeps going and still uses fuel. So if you leave active pause on for a few hours and come back, you might have run out of fuel. This happened to me once.
  7. Oh yes, quite aware of that. Don't even think of saying something blasphemous about the developer gods - you get a summary and permanent ban. Hyperbole is lost on some... Anyway, those dudes are far from my biggest problem in life. Hope you all have succesfull update. :pilot:
  8. This is much different from the official forums, where there's a gnashing of teeth going on. But I'm glad it's working well for you guys. Luckily (?) I don't have a computer anymore, so you lot can sort out this mess for me.
  9. $200 for a new card is probably stretching it. You may need to look at the secondary market. Regardless, I think the best bang-for-buck card at the moment is the Radeon RX6600. It seems to be roughly the same price as the 3050, but performs better. Your 5600X supports PCIE gen 4, so it should also be ok with the 6500XT. That said, it doesn't have great reviews at all, so avoid it if you can. What GPU do you currently use and how does it perform?
  10. I understand what your getting at, but I don't think it will ever be really fair. If you want to see what unfair looks like, take a look at Africa. I was born in South Africa and lived there for most of my life, so I still fly there very frequently. Yet there are very few POIs, certainly compared to even North America. I think the most reasonable way to approach this is to make suggestions to Asobo and from there we just take what we get and let the third parties do the rest (as has always been the case).
  11. I agree with you. I overclocked the snot of my puny old R3. A full 1 GHz over base, and 700 MHz over boost. BUT, I put a 230W cooler on a 65W CPU and my case has great airflow. I also overclocked my geriatric 970 by 200 MHz, but I use a custom and quite aggresive fan curve. With this setup, I get extremely infrequent crashes. Much fewer than some stock systems out there, that's for sure. At my settings and with my system, that's what I have to do and is the difference between 25 fps and 30 fps. Big difference right there. To the OP, you're fine. I run a combination of medium-high settings, with trees on ultra and 90% render scaling. On an ultrawide 1080p (remember, ultrawide is more pixels horizontally) I get 30 -33 FPS in most places. New york might see me dip down into mid 20s. Granted that's with something like a Caravan, not an A320. Lukcily, the sim is tuneable; and with a little bit of digging, you can squeeze a lot of performance out of it.
  12. Yes, that's understable. And it's good if they're plan to clear bugs that are low-hanging fruit. I guess my point is that I don't see some big ticket bugs that many complain about, but I see a lot of bugs that I haven't seen anyone complain about. To give them some credit, perhaps they want to clear out a laundry list of minor stuff before attending to the big improvements. I think the expectation was perhaps just a little different when they initially said "bug fix update".
  13. That's good and all, and I really mean it. But happened to SU8 being a bug-fix update? To be sure, I saw the list of bugs that they plan to fix. But I think most of those are quite rare and unobtrusive that I don't think they matter to most people. Now, ATC yapping on about expediting cimbs and A330 performance art exhibitions on the taxiways (to name a few)...that's a real pain. But I don't see anything about those.
  14. Hi speedbird. Have you tried another aircraft to check if the same happens? That might narrow the possibilities of what's causing the issue. Another thing to do is to try the auto start (ctrl-e, I think). I know that's not how you'd like to do it, but it could also narrow down the possibilities. Before removing the honeycomb software just yet, first try simply unplugging the yoke and using only the mouse and keyboard. You also mention the King Air, but that's a turboprop - so no magnetos. I'm not sure what to make of that - are you having trouble getting it to start too?
  15. Well, one way is to go to the shortcut bar at the top, select camera and choose cockpit view from the window that pops up. Regarding the switch view toggle, I assume you mean a key to cycle through the three primary view modes (cockpit, external - i.e. spot plane, and showcase). In that case, I'm not sure that there is a switch for that. But you can assign a toggle to each of the individual view modes, which will toggle between the current view and the desired view. I don't remember what the defaults are, because I changed them on my system 18 months ago. I assume you want to toggle to the external view. Go to the controls settings and search for "Toggle external" or something like that. If nothing comes up, make sure that the bindings filter shows "All" keys, not just the "Assigned" keys. Ha, and there you thought this would be simple...
  16. On points 2 and 3: 2) Yes, I use one everytime I fly. They work well. 3) It's definitely possible to view the cockpit. In fact the view functionality works normally, other than starting outside.
  17. I don't have an Xbox, so what I know is pure hearsay and gossip. But I've heard that there are enormous problems in the development kit for creating Xbox addons. In fact I've read of a few high profile developers pulling their products and issuing refunds. Apparently the problem is that development takes place in a "Xbox simulator" but still on a pc, and its a bit half baked at the moment. I get the impression that a mature Xbox environment is still a long way off. Not great news, sorry.
  18. My GPU is in the low 70s when at 100% in the sim. But I have a lot of fans for the case size to keep it that way.
  19. Hello everyone, Has anyone tried using a force feedback joystick on Windows 11? Do they work? I recently bought an old Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick for a mere $12 since it had a broken trigger button. Luckily I am reasonable with a soldering iron, so I ordered a replacement switch and now it's fixed. I also cleaned the running gear and lubricated the gearboxes with caliper grease. I'm on W10 and the stick is working great (using a third-party program), but I will probably eventually upgrade to 11 once there's a performance/stability reason to. At that stage, I'd like to continue using this stick. But if not, I may just sell it now, because these sticks seem to be worth quite a lot and I can use the money (haha, there's a reason I'm still on a 970). Just as an aside, it's remarkable how these sticks have held up since they're now going on 20 years old. They are truly great and I now understand why they have such a loyal fanbase.
  20. I also see this. Even my CPU is close to a 100% on one thread, with one or two other threads around 60%. And I've overclocked the snot out of the CPU and GPU. Realise that this sim is very demanding on a PC and mine will raise the room temperature after a while of simming. But I don't think it's too much of an issue, as long as the GPU temperatures are reasonable. I even consider it a good thing in that the sim is making full use of my GPU. So either the GPU or one thread of the CPU should be around 100% (in which case you would be CPU limited). If neither of those are at 100%, some other issue may be the cause (slow ram perhaps) and you're essentially leaving performance on the table.
  21. I'm not sure about any formal language policy, but English is the de facto. So I think you should translate your message to get a helpful response. Any of us could also do it, but since it's your post I think it's fair that you do it. English is not my first language either, but it's what we have... And happy new year!
  22. To upgrade your current PC, we first need to know it's specs; otherwise we wouldn't know what to recommend. So tell us the specs of the following: 1. CPU 2. GPU 3. RAM 4. Motherboard 5. Power supply 6. Monitor Also, you said you want to upgrade to an "I900" processor. Did you mean an i9?
  23. Oooff, I was guilty of this. I'll never forget my instructor nagging me incessently to get my eyes out of the cockpit.
  24. This may or may not be the case, but I've heard that external programs like MSI afterburner can get confused when you have other windows open, or you use a pop-out panel, like the ATC for example. Was this the case? Also, how do you measure the FPS? Using dev mode or an external application? Edit: It's also worth asking: did actually experience any CTDs when you saw the higher FPS/usage numbers? I ask because you said that's the reason why you limited the FPS to start with. If you haven't, you might be concerned about a non-issue (notwithstanding the pure need to understand the change).
