  1. Speaking of wasting time: this post suggests that you must have time on your hands. If you don't want an addon, don't download it. Simple.
  2. Thanks again. As far as I can tell, the only other place besides the layout file in which the folder name is required, is in the sub-folder included in "ContentInfo" which contains the thumbnail. Changing this, along with the layout file, still doesn't do the trick. Only the original file name works. I do appreciate your help on this. If you have any other ideas I would be happy to hear them!
  3. Thanks -- I changed the title in the "layout" file to match the new folder name, but I don't see how to edit the "manifest" file, as the folder title does not appear there. Any suggestions?
  4. I wish this were true – it certainly sounds as if it should be. But unfortunately, it is not. I changed the name of an addon (Kennedy Space Center) and found that it did not show up in the sim – only when I changed the name of the folder back to the original (aquilasim-nasa) did it work. Even shortening to just "aquasim" causes the addon objects to not show up. Can anybody explain this? I can’t imagine why changing the addon folder name in Community matters – but it does!
  5. First of all, you need to pay attention and read more carefully. The huge number of videos, reviews, and forum discuss in detail far more than just the "visuals". The realism of flight, weather, and many other aspects of MSFS absolutely break new ground, as even many real-life pilots attest. As for the "visuals", i.e. scenery, you and I are in different universes on this -- for me the real-life modeling of the planet is totally mind-boggling and I simply can't relate to those who find it unimportant. As for your question, I don't follow. It is like asking, if my new car looked and drove exactly like my old car would I still buy it? What?
  6. Is the bridge supposed to be added automatically, as an update? I don't see it. Also, "msadddons.org" does not work as an address. So, how do I add the bridge? Many thanks. Never mind -- I discovered it is msfsaddons.org.
  7. It uses satellite-based 3D imagery, vastly different from that employed in FSX or any other earlier sim.
  8. There is a great new, and free, interactive VFR map that connects to MSFS and is based on Street Map and is extremely detailed. It's great! Check out https://www.msfsaddons.org/freeware/plugin-vfrmap
  9. This comment is very welcome, and timely. Several others (including me) have discussed the possibilities the MSFS real-world 3d scenery offers in areas beyond flight simulation. I too am also a train simmer and the idea of adapting this scenery data base for that purpose is fascinating.
  10. There is a slew mode in MSFS (press Y), and it can be mapped to a flight yoke. See under "Controls".
  11. I have to say, this post of way off base on two counts. One, the scenery is not just "pretty" -- it is real-world for the entire planet, which is a revolutionary advance that is way beyond anything seen in any previous simulator. Two, you have apparently been nowhere near a game arcade in years (or decades), because MSFS is a highly detailed and often challenging simulator that bears no relationship whatsoever to arcade games. "Kiddie crowd"? Are you serious?
  12. The interesting thing about this video is that, while I see your point about the night lighting, overall the city looks fantastic! It seems that we have a whole new standard in which a great video can be used to illustrate flaws. Who knew?
  13. I completely agree. I have enjoyed FSX with multiple add-ons since its inception in 2006, but we have entered a whole new age of flight simulation.
  14. As one who has been flight-simming since FS2 in 1982 --- when there were only two buildings and the ground scenery was basically a pair of lines representing a runway --- welcome to the club! Let me assure you that while there have been great strides since FS2, and current sims such as FSX and X-plane are excellent, MSFS is beyond anything seen before and breaks new ground in many ways. As a fellow addict, I understand your addiction!
  15. It will work if you type in the latitude and longitude in decimal form, e.g. N38.7615 W79.3384 This will place your plane at that location. Coordinates written as degrees-minutes-seconds (e.g. 33 14 43) will not work; they have to be converted first to decimal form, but this can easily be done in your computer -- just search for "coordinates converter" and it will bring up a simple tool to do this. You can use slew mode to make adjustments in the exact location of the plane.
  16. Indeed. But is he for real? This almost sounds like a put-on. If it's real, it is a level of curmudgeon-ness I don't recall seeing before!
  17. Glad to know you appreciate my help. You are most welcome. Good day to you, sir, and I must say it has been most interesting talking with you.
  18. If you simply look through the threads in this or any similar flight sim website (or do a search for specific topics, which is faster), you will find the answers you are looking for. But despite your unwarranted sarcasm -- which tempts me to say the hell with it -- I will try to help you (not sure why). Concerning Windows 10, I have been a Windows 7 user until 10 days ago when bought a new computer with this OS, which turns out to be easy to use and is not that different from Win 7. The DVD version of MSFS is available only in Europe, as the Microsoft announcement makes clear. I have ordered the download version from the Microsoft store, which requires setting up a Microsoft account (no charge for that), but you can also purchase through Steam. I am pretty sure that you will not be able to create your own flight models, nor could you in FSX or FS9 as far as I know. Possibly you can offer to pay for the new sim by trading for your ocean-view property in Nevada --it should be worth at least 60 bucks.
  19. Lack of information? Good Heavens, we have been inundated with it -- check out the forums and videos! As I recall, the original announcement from Microsoft answers several of your questions. Do your homework. To get you started, the required OS is Windows 10.
  20. As a matter of fact, most of the world HAS been mapped, vegetation included (perhaps not the precise species of trees depicted, but for heaven's sake let's be reasonable!). If you want to see what is between airports, there are dozens of videos that show incredibly detailed real-life scenery with roads, towns, and pretty much everything as it actually is. As for the 37,000 airports lacking the features of the handcrafted ones: we are talking here about stuff like baggage handlers loading luggage onto planes and so forth. For me, this is a nice touch but pretty far down on my list of priorities! Are we maybe "letting the perfect be the enemy of the good", as the saying goes?
  21. No. From all I have read and seen, FS2020 uses an entirely new scenery system based on computer-enhanced satellite imagery which is incompatible with anything preceding it (and far superior).
  22. I think you have a basic misunderstanding of what the scenery in FS2020 actually entails. It is a 3D representation of the entire globe as it actually is, based on satellite imagery coupled with advanced techniques for rendering full 3D dimensionality. The "enhanced" airports you refer to have features such as detailed ground handling and so forth; the other 37,000 airports will lack these special features, but will still appear very similar to what they are in real life -- no "generic" stuff. Autogen is a thing of the past, as is the old "photoreal" which, of course, is entirely flat. We are about to enter a whole new era.
