  1. I've encountered an annoying problem with John Loney's Dover AFB scenery, FSX version. Base Installation File Name: dover_afb_kdov_fsx.zip FSX Dover Scenery Update File Name: Name: kdov_upd_fsx.zip The entire flightline is somehow triggering refueling, which wreaks havoc for fuel burn stats and flight setups. Happens both at start, and arriving into a parking spot, with all aircraft. But, checking the scenery with ADE 1.75 shows the parking spots to be RAMP_MIL_CARGO, not refueling parking. Simple Airport Scanner shows no dupe KDOV scenery installed, and removing all the MIL_CARGO parking spaces completely with ADE does not stop plane fuel from jumping to 100% when parking on the main flight line, from end to end of the tarmac. I believe this scenery was originally created for FS9, then updated into an FSX scenery - Airport Studio software is mentioned in John's docs. It's wonderful scenery, but I'm running out of ideas for stopping this unwanted free fuel. Any suggestions? Thanks, ftldave
  2. Once true, but HP ain't what it used to be. Awful software for consumer market printers and, from my experience, their ink jet printers are lucky to last 3 years at most after normal use. Don't make the mistake of thinking HP still makes reliable printers. The last HP ink-jet I owned had the awful BUY A NEW HP CARTRIDGE pop-up every single time you would print, when the toner got low. And no way to turn off the notification -- it was hard coded into the printer driver. I replaced it with a Canon AIO, will not be buying HP for home ever again.

  4. Nate Strickland of Intel said this: The only real answer is "it depends on the drive." ... the [performance] slowdown can be avoided with over-provisioning and smart controllers, but over-provisioning adds to the cost/GB, so cheaper drives won't over-provision much. 25% free space may be overkill but many drives will indeed slow noticeably when you go over 90%.
  5. I've found this procedure to be very helpful: From SIMFORUMS.COM SETUP FOR NVIDIA INSPECTOR https://www.simforums.com/forums/nvi-w7810-driver-setup-fsx-fsxse-and-p3d-update_topic59954.html
  6. No, a corporate marketing campaign, not a commie plot. Read famed UK test pilot Roland "Bee" Beamont's autobiography. It tells about how Lockheed aggressively, and sometimes pretty much dishonestly, sold the F-104 around the world, even when other manufacturer's aircraft (like the English Electric Lightning) was probably a better pilot's choice. I get a thrill seeing the Starfighter at museums, in pics, videos, and sims, but I know there was lots of bribery, ruthless salesmanship, and good old boy deals in smoke-filled back rooms that got the F-104 into the air, despite its many design and performance shortcomings.
  7. Microsoft ends Windows 7 support for consumers in January 2020 -- no more bug fixes or security patches. At my workplace, enforced by IT security rules, and at my home, enforced by me, no unsupported operating systems running anywhere unless it might somehow be a standalone computer always disconnected from the Internet.
  8. Price and subscription fees probably won't be a deal killer for me. I expect those will be in line with my other recreational expenses. But, if political correctness leads to no military planes available in the sim, I will be reluctant. So-called "corporate culture" has changed since FSX Acceleration and Gold versions were released back when. If done today, I wonder if Microsoft would still include the F/A-18 fighter jet? Or would it be excluded because it's now an example of "toxic masculinity", and Microsoft doesn't want to offend anybody?
  9. Reading the specs won't give you the full picture, not without checking reviews and online posts. For example, Ultimate Traffic Live is a good AI package but support has been spotty due to the primary developer having a "personal crisis". So, if you have problems, help not always available from the program vendor. And you're exactly right - when developers and programmers are the main source of marketing materials, it can make for godawful reading.
  10. The new Flight Simulator isn't released yet, so FSX is far from dead. My bill for FSX payware add-ons during Memorial Day sales proves that. And good that "no fudge" will be required for the new sim. All the winking-and-nudging over the past 10 years, and the divisions it caused in the flightsim community, wasn't healthy or admirable at all.
  11. Say what? I spent way too much $$$ on FSX add-ons, scenery during the Memorial Day sales held by "the biggest add on companies." The demise of FSX is greatly exaggerated, and not everyone can wink and nudge enough times to consider kingm56's suggestion. FSX continues to be the best supported flightsim software with the biggest library of payware and freeware. And it's OK to say that IN the FSX Forum, thank you very much.
  12. Why revert to PM? Available from the friendly neighbor site, Simviation.com, with Wallaert's fine 2D panel for all to enjoy. Note that there's a patch for the VC panel. One of the great benefits of a forum like flightsim.com is the sharing of information for others. 13. I wish Santa Claus was real, LOL! Pay up again, order again directly from the vendors, and look forward to the higher P3D version prices, my friend. It's the not-so-free market at work! :p
  14. Maybe better posted over the the P3D forum, not the FSX forum? Hobbyists here, not trainees or K-12 enrolled students, you know. :p
  15. Be aware: Microsoft support and maintenance for Windows 7 ends in January 2020, no more security patches/updates being the worst aspect. But if you're determined to buy it, mychoicesoftware.com - rated A+ by Better Business Bureau.
  16. In its day it was originally called "STEERAGE"! :p http://www.norwayheritage.com/gallery/gallery/The_Voyage/steerage-1873.jpg
  17. Better be aware that much, if not most, of your FSX add-ons aren't going to be compatible with Lockheed Martin's training software. P3D 4 and, no doubt, the mythical P3D 5, are 64-bit programs, while FSX is 32-bit based programming. You won't be able to bring all your payware and such to P3D.
  18. Ryanair is infamous for its whack CEO making this hated proposal in 2009- see below. There's no scarcity of stupid, greedy managers at airlines, and some say this was just another way for the Ryanair exec to get his face on television, but it ranks as one of the dumbest "business" ideas in passenger service history. From Wired.com: "Ryanair, the Irish airline that has elevated nickeling and diming passengers to an art form, has found another way to suck money out of people's pockets — installing pay toilets on airplanes. "The CEO of the famously cheap company announced, with a straight face, that he's toying with the idea of putting pay toilets in every one of the airline's 168 Boeing 737s. The idea has pilots and passengers freaking out, the airline's flacks scrambling to contain the damage and us wondering what happens to the poor schmuck who can't break a tenner."
  19. Yes, he is aware. From the readme file: " I use a lot of MIAW bases in addition to these, ones I like I leave others I go and redo the default file as the ones being presented here." Nice to see the package, but would a list of the bases been so hard to include in the readme or description? And, not to be overlooked, Team SDB has long been the primary source of payware military bases.
  20. Two pc's and a laptop updated with the latest - zero problems. Those crying out "never update" should bear in mind that in Win10 these updates, especially those changing the build number, are what was previously called Service Packs and, yes, they're important for security and performance. Sad to see some having the post-update problems, but it's definitely not the usual outcome. I've had one program (Classic Shell) need to reconfigure at the first post-update logon, otherwise, everything running A-OK.
  21. Not clearly identified as a texture set, not the full aircraft, nor which aircraft model is required. A little bit more information would be helpful, please.
  22. Many people continue to use and enjoy 2D panels, including yours truly. New third-party vendor and freeware aircraft, scenery, and utilities for FSX continue to be released, more enough than can be used in a human lifetime, there's so much. That's the ongoing FSX evolution that hobbyists can enjoy for many years to come.
  23. There's no one named "FSX" phasing out 2D cockpits. That was one vendor's opinion, and it's not true for other vendors' new releases, for example the recent Virtualcol CRJ Series Pack.
  24. Wrong. When I asked Virtavia directly, their answer was "Cost saving in development". Sure, VC have great appearance when well done, but many of us just don't enjoy "flying the camera" views and prefer to focus on the flight instruments.
  25. It's a cost-saving measure by the vendors, sad to say. Companies like Virtavia choose now to omit 2D panels even though many of us prefer flying in that mode. I always try to add a 2D panel if possible, and hesitate to purchase aircraft models without them. Philippe Wallert is another freeware developer who continues to create fine 2D wide panels.
