CFS2 Grumman Hellcat Skin. This repaint represents aircraft #8 of VOF-1, USS Tulagi, Operation Dragoon (Invasion of southern France). Observation-fighter squadron VOF-1 was the first USN air unit to be specially trained for spotting naval gunfire and for close support of ground forces. Its major contribution to Dragoon was armed reconnaissance. Loaded with bombs and rockets, the Hellcats penetrated deep into the Rhone valley, laying waste to the retreating German columns. #8 was credited with four kills. CFS2 Lockheed P-38 M Night Lightning. Nearly 40 mph faster than the larger Northrop P-61 Black Widow nighttime fighter, the "Night Lightning" was to serve as a dedicated radar-equipped night fighter. This version of the most heavily armored aircraft used in World War II is the IL-2T torpedo bomber and ground attack model.
