How do you keep FSX interesting?

Recommended Posts

This is KLXV Leadville, Colorado, the highest airfield in North America at 9,927 feet

I managed to get a default FSX 737 out of there (below) but it needed careful handling to coax it into the thin air with a 15-knot headwind.

But try as I might, I couldn't manage to take off with a default Boeing 747, it ran off the end of the runway with its nose high and its tail almost scraping the runway and the dreaded 'Crash!' message came up!

I tried different flap settings with no joy, the 747 refused to unstick, maybe I should increase the wind speed to gale force to give the wings something to bite into, but that'd be a bit like cheating.

If anybody has better luck getting a 747 out, let us know how you did it..:)

I set up weather, from interweb:

temp:68F Dewpoint 17F

wind 16 knots from 341

left press at sea level at 29.92

17.00pm local

Default 747_400 fsx Acc. (fully default, not even panel edits, restored from backup for the occasion)

Fuel 44% in each tank

Set up AP:

hdg-341

vs-600

alt-21.000

Flaps-Full

trim up:-16 clicks

Speed in autothrottle set to 159 Kias

parking brake on

thrust 60% for a minute, to warm up engine

engaged alt hold and hdg hold. Ap not yet engaged.

engaged autothrust. speed hold not engaged yet.

Released parking brake, set full 'throttle'.

at 3/4 runway, 120 knots, AP engaged (climb set.)

when climb established, and speed above 130, speed hold engaged.

result!

But, at 55% fuel it hit the fence.

So Its been a super long time since I posted anything here... but the way I keep myself coming back to FSX is to have this one scenario - that i had started way back with FS 5... To start at KISP, which was the closest major airport to my home town, in a single engine cessna or whatev and to just airport hop. First east on Long Island, then across the sound, and then north.

I currently am doing that same flight using real world weather. I switch airplanes between a few freeware/payware models, but they are all single engine props.

I had been away from it for a while, but I am currently at Halifax, and about to depart for whatever I see next on my GPS. It gives you a lot of take off and landing practice, VFR and basic nav practice as well. Plus as you get farther north, the scenery change becomes more noticeable.

Its very relaxing, and with no real destination in mind, the only limit is to how long I can dedicate to the flight. Id love to get around the world this way, but there are a lot of airports to cover... Ill settle for getting to Europe, maybe down to the Canary Islands.

"Wheeee!" KLXV active runway, 50% fuel all tanks, 5 degrees flaps, a couple of clicks of elevator trim, max throttle, (sorry, mechanics!) less than the full runway!

Tried once more, accidentally forgot to set up fuel, so it was still full fuel. Lifted off as well. Needed every inch of runway, but then, up up and away.

That was flaps full.

Tried full fuel at flaps 5 as well. No chance.

Wait guys i've lost track! I asked if anybody can takeoff a default 747 with default full fuel and default full passenger load from KLXV Leadville Colorado because I haven't been able to do it (sniffle).

Are you saying you can or can't do it?

Yes you can let your GPS tell you where to go next..:)

Alternatively I use a printed paper map like this and pencil in a number 1-10 against 10 airfields and then roll a 10-sided dice to let it tell me which airfield to go for next.

I don't access the inflight map because that'd be too easy as it always shows you exactly where your plane icon is.

Also, before each takeoff I roll a dice three times to let it set wind speed, wind direction and visibility so that each flight session is refreshingly different because it's decided purely on dice rolls..

I'm playing about with the freeware FSX Parachute Jumper, go here and scroll down to download him, he's file specops2-

https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=40762500&page=2

He doesn't actually jump out of a plane, you select him on the Aircraft Selection Screen, then hit 'Y' to enter slew mode, then hit F4 to send him into the air, then hit 'Y' to exit slew.

He'll be dropping like a stone in freefall so hit the flaps key to pop his chute and steer him around with the joystick and rudder. You can hit key 'I' to activate his red smoke canister, and 'L' to start a strobe on his belt flashing.

Tip- pull back the stick to flare him just before landing or the 'crash' message might come up.

Did it! Full tanks, 8 knot wind, flaps at 10 degrees. I used the whole runway and was getting terrain warnings, but successful takeoff and aileron roll shortly there after.

Fascinating, I just succeeded too with full default fuel and passengers into a 16 kts headwind and FULL flap, with pure manual control all the way (no autopilot)..:)

This morning I recreated the flight of the Kirby's in the King Air in Jurassic Park 3. We took off from Costa Rica, SAn Jose Airport and flew south and east to the DAV VOR where we dropped under 1000' and then followed the 114 radial out to 'Isla Sorna', which I had to replicate using Panama's Isle de Coiba, an uninhabited national park. Once over the ocean I dropped to 300' to avoid radar. Coiba looked OK, but FSX did stick in some farmland as well as thick jungle, I presumed the habitation was what was left of Site B. WE circled and I found a spot to put the King Air down. Unfortunately not a sign of any dinosaurs!!!

Flying without AP does it for me. :D

Yes, that's fun. Want to up it a notch? Try dead reckoning navigation without GPS! In the '60s we'd have likely cut off a few body parts to get a functional GPS! Except of course, we'd have never believed such a thing could ever exist!!

Charts, Compass, Vortac, & ADF get whole new meanings without the GPS crutch. If you get tired of that game and want to kick up another notch, fly lower so the Vortac signal is lost too.

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

Absolutely agree with Rupert!

Being tired of heavy irons like PMDG, for the last 2.5 years I've been flying Sibwings An-2 and occasionally A2A GA aircraft without GPS and autopilot. Believe me, it's extremely funny!

Once over the ocean I dropped to 300' to avoid radar.

That works, as long as they don't have an Aerostat. There was talk a while back of putting one on, but I don't know what, if anything, ever came of it. I know we had a couple down in the Bahamas, and there was one in Kuwait, until it got invaded. I don't know if they ever put one back up...

Anyway, with an Aerostat up, I don't care how low you go, it can "see" you. I know we could "see" targets going real low-n-slow off San Diego. I am using "see" in the Radar sense...

Lately, to keep it interesting, I am flying the incredible F/A-18C from over on the FSDT website. Incredible bird, the FCS and flight characteristics come as close as FSX is capable of being, and that's according to a couple of experienced real-world Naval Aviators. Or Nasal Radiators if you prefer :D

It's just friggen awesome!

Have great flights to all, whatever you do!

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Hi folks,

What do you do on FSX to keep things interesting? Fun addons? try different planes? practice non-normal procedures? do ATW trips? VatSim? FSPassenger? Missions? etc

I'm just trying to get ideas to keep FSX fresh.

Well this is a tuff one, what I do is create new items for everyone, yes this mean you. I enjoy filming the item before posting it here at FlightSim and 3 more sites.

I started after inheriting the simulator system and read many e-mails from you guy's. Now it has taken a life of its own and I find sincere pleasure in repainting and modifying aircraft to return to this community of individuals that love flight.

This hobby keeps my mind fresh and reminds me of happier times with people that I had time to share with in my life. Now my films are taking a new turn of real world historical flights, incorporating not only the simulation aspect but if available real people and real situations of what happened in that flight.

So not only do you get the repaint or aircraft you also get a reference point of how this aircraft changed or effected our world.

Respectfully:

David.

And if we've got Photoreal scenery we can do a spot of "aerial archaeology" such as here 8 miles east of Swindon (England).

1- Dragon Hill where St. George slew the dragon, note how its blood burnt the grass off the top and where it trickled down the sides.

2- Uffington Horse carved into the chalk around 1000 years BC.

3- Uffington Castle from the same period; the word "castle" in this sense means a hilltop encampment of houses surrounded by a defensive ditch/earthwork and wooden wall, of which only the ditch/earthwork remains-

Hey newcomers, remember you can have fun landing wherever you want, you don't need no steenkin runways..:)

For example this is my Cub taking off from a road in FSX default Yosemite-
