  1. I'd been thinking of that. I'll try it if I have another malfunction after rebooting. Thanks.
  2. I have had recurrent and inexplicable CTDs since the last big update. But the sim was at least generally playable, with patience. And I was s-o-o-o- hopeful about the new update. What on earth have they done now??!! Can they never leave the well enough alone? I just did the anticipated mandatory update (after moving ALL add-ons out of Community). First flight (from Fairbanks) froze the computer just after takeoff. Not a CTD. Frozen solid. Had to end task. Reopened. Went to NY (KTEB). Took off. Freedom Tower was at first absent in the distance, but was starting to appear, when -- CTD! I'll concede that I had not been able to open at Fairbanks at all for a few weeks, so now I could. Great. But New York (with photogrammetry and Bing data engaged) had never been a problem. We'll try again tomorrow. But, at least on first impression, WHAT A TOTAL BUMMER!
  3. Thanks. That makes sense. I had removed one livery from Official to see if is replaced by the next update, but I shall replace it ASAP.
  4. Replace them, I get. But "longer than usual"? Why so? BTW, It takes me about 5 minutes on average to get to the Home screen. Then about 2 minutes to load a flight. So a CTD is a major PITA. Also BTW: I believe I've read there's to be a big update Tuesday. Good to know.
  5. I've been told here that having a lot of add-ons in the Community folder increases your load time. (OK, there were some dissenting views.) Well, what about the Official folder? I looked it over today, and there's an awful lot of stuff I won't use -- in particular, a few ugly liveries for the default aircraft. Can't I just toss them (or move them somewhere out of the sim)? Same with bush flights.
  6. I've always just opened the screenshot in Paint. Then save it to wherever you edit your pix. (I still use Picassa, now discontinued by Google due to its incredible excellence, but it still works for most purposes.) Also, if you want to post screenshots on this forum, your default screen res is probably too high. But you can use Paint to resize, too, like to 60%,
  7. OK, you can all relax. Went back to the CJ4, different livery, different locale, and it took off like it used to. I'll experiment with other settings tomorrow. Sometimes funny things happen in MSFS.
  8. What's with this? Level flight at 16,000, full power. I believe I've previously gone faster, but there's something holding me back today. What could it be?
  9. One more datum: Yesterday, I cheated the sim: went to Innsbruck (LOWI) and flew to Vienna (LOWW) and was able to land without incident. Then I went to Main Menu and tried to initiate a flight from LOWW. CTD! (Of course.) Event Viewer/Admin Events may be obvious, but the info is utter gobbledygook. In any case, none of the few errors listed mentions MSFS.
  10. All I do is set LOWW and let the sim situate me for takeoff. How would I know if any of my add-ons are causing it?! Whatever they are, they're not causing a problem at any other airport (yet). In any case, I have no scenery add-ons in Europe at this time.
  11. This is a new one. I've had troubles with CTDs off and on, but I've not previously had trouble when merely starting at a given airport (exception: the Geneva (LSGG) payware add-on, which doesn't work for me -- and others here). My wife and I are planning a post-covid junket to Vienna in September, so I'd thought I'd check it out from the air. But it turns out that entering LOWW as the flight origin crashes the sim to desk. Every time. Aircraft and weather seem to make no difference. Is there a fix? Are there known to be rogue airports in MSFS which always crash to desk? Thanks all, Mac6737
  12. I have complained bitterly on this forum about the failure of MSFS to render ocean water realistically. Others have chimed in to agree, the common complaint being that you had to up the wind to absurd levels in order to see whitecaps, etc., and then you could not control a small plane in such wind speeds. Well, guess what. Adobo (or somebody) seems to have fixed this, sort of. In the past week, I have been able to boost wind speeds to about 24-26 kts and see whitecaps without losing control of even small GA aircraft. All is not well, however. Even at such wind speeds (with higher gusts), there seems to be no effect on my ability to control the plane, and it doesn't jump around, as it should IRL. But better is better!
  13. Yeah, I've had this problem, too. I believe I even sent something to Zendesk (a forlorn hope). But recently, my saved flight success has increased quite a bit, for unknown reasons. Someone on this forum told me that I should save flights as *.PLN files, and I have started to do that. You can't, of course, do that en route. But I am optimistic about recent successes. If you save your initial flight plan scenario as a *.PLN, you should then be able to save and store situations en route as *.FLT files and not have them CTD immediately. Of course, the underlying problem remains. You should be able to save ANY situation as a *.FLT file and be able to reopen it reliably. But I can't. I believe I am now batting 500 on this; but it should be 1,000. (It used to be about 100, so things are looking up!)
  14. Yes, I admit the MSFS ocean has texture that would be realistic, if only it were a lake. Aesthetic opinions will differ, but I think P3D with Rex Texture Direct looks better, on the whole. I take few screen shots over ocean water in MSFS because it looks so unreal to me, but here's one at Cape Henlopen, where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic. I can't say the ocean has never looked that calm anywhere; just that I've never seen it -- and I've spent a lot of time in, over and under the ocean.
  15. Todays' Home page shows a link to a promo video for the JustFlight Stearman biplane. Towards the end, there's a shot of the Stearman about 10 feet up in the air over highly realistic waves, including some whitecaps. The Stearman, I note, is a small airplane, and its top speed is said to be 96kts. The only way I can get real-looking waves in MSFS is by cranking the wind up so high that I can't control a plane -- and certainly not a slow, little plane. I had resigned myself to this deficiency, and prior threads have indicated that my frustration is shared by many. But the Stearman video has rekindled my envy. Look, someone had to do that video in MSFS with a Stearman. What do they know that I (and many others) do not know about getting wave action in MSFS? With manageable winds, my ocean looks like a millpond!
  16. Tim, I just saw your last post in this thread. Not to belabor this, but we are not communicating. Of course you have to save. Let's say I'm flying along with a "valid flight plan," which I believe means an origin airport and a destination airport. I'm following the GPS. Click ESC. Click LOAD/SAVE from toolbar at bottom of screen. LocalState window appears. Enter a name for the new saved flight. Click SAVE in the window. (It will save as .FLT, and there is no option to change the file type to anything, let alone .PLN.) That's what I do every time I wish to save a flight. They all appear as .FLT files. And sometimes they do open properly, but I have yet to nail down the variable -- if there is one.
  17. Have I mentioned there's no manual for MSFS, at least not one that actually gives you any info on how to fly the planes? (Rhetorical question.) Anyway, I am trying to up my skills to the next level, which I do by blundering around with buttons on the panel while I'm on AP. So I was in the King Air, flying a GPS route from KDEN to Jackson Hole (KJAC). Nearing KJAC, I decided to fiddle with the settings in the right-hand screen, and pushed "PRO." This produced the display I attach here. This looked like the screens I've seen in YouTube instructional videos for the CJ4, a hopeful sign. So I clicked on "Load and Activate." My King Air then left the GPS route, but did not follow the path traced by those waypoints. Instead, it went to 315, heading for nothing -- at least not KJAC. I then changed my CDI to VOR1. No effect. So I deactivated the autopilot and started to fly the approach pattern on the screen. Being a polite sort, I contacted the KJAC tower, but they told me to "Fly left traffic, Runway 21" -- in other words, land to the south, directly opposite the approach on my screen. Is the AP supposed to follow the approach generated by the panel? If so, how can I get it to do that? And how does the plane generate an approach path without checking with the tower? Thanks all.
  18. Thanks for everyone who's tried to help. But here's some good news: A week ago, I did 2 things: as advised here, I updated Win 10 and also removed Orbx's "Edgley" plane (installed June 8) from my Community folder. Since then, I have opened 9 scenarios successfully (including 3 saved flights), and only had one CTD. This is a great improvement over the 5 consecutive CTDs I had on June 8 -9. I am tempted to conclude that the Edgley was the stinker, somehow. I shall test that hypothesis further. Some day.
  19. FWIW, this describes my experience exactly. So I don't activate the AP until I've loaded any parameters I want, like ALT and NAV.
  20. Well, I often put in BOTH origin and destination, as I said, and then follow the GPS route. But I still have no .PLN files in LocalState. (Wish this were my biggest headache.)
  21. I click LOAD the only time it appears after starting up the sim. Maybe I shouldn't call it the the "Welcome Page." It's where you go after you click on the upper left quadrant of the first thing you get to after you boot up. But any way you slice it, I have no .PLN files in LocalState. I see in the fine print you only get a .pln with a "valid flight plan." Maybe that's my problem. I don't seek approval. I put in the destination and follow the GPS route. Or, sometimes, I just load a small plane, like a Cub or Carenado's biplane, at an originating airport to fly around a scenic area, and hope I don't hit anybody.
  22. I assumed you meant press LOAD in the sim, from the Welcome page: you can insert parameters or press LOAD to select a saved flight. When I press LOAD at that point, I see nothing like your screenshot. I get a list of saved flights in a window, all designated .FLT, and nothing else. When I go to the LocalState folder, it appears that every flight I have ever saved is represented with three files: .SPB, .FLT and FLT.SSave. That is, the names I assigned before the dot are identical: "TakeoffKDCA.SPB," TakeoffKDCA.FLT," "TakeoffKDCA.FLT.FSSave." There is not a single .PLN file! As I said earlier, there is a solution to this problem: Don't save flights.
