  1. OK, so I can't opt out. But . . . I may not have problems? Remind me not to uninstall P3D just yet. An additional source of worry is the confluence of this update with the emergence of Win 11, and the necessary efforts to mesh SU6 with Win 11, as well as Win 10. The chances of an error-free update, I'd say, are vanishingly small.
  2. I've been away from home and computer for a week, and returned late last night. I now see on this forum numerous serious complaints about an update ("SU6") rendering the sim unusable. This happened to me a few months ago, but was magically cured by a hotfix. MSFS was working GREAT before I left town, but I fear that it will, once again, be totally screwed up by the latest update. Can I opt out of the update? Any advice before I boot it up later today?
  3. I often complain here, or ask for help with CTDs, etc., so I thought I'd share some good news for a change. In the past, with V-sync on, my CPU was typically working at Here's what I've done: --Installed the latest driver, 472.12, for my Nvidia GPU. --Turned off V-sync. --In my Nvidia control panel ("3D setting"), limited my FPS to 30. (Some will argue, but most concur the human eye can't detect any difference between 30 and much higher; so why waste your GPU's energy on "unlimited" FPS?) --Went to the SoFly Manual, p. 214 et seq., and implemented all of their suggestions for maximizing performance (with a few minor differences) EXCEPT I left Game Mode ON. This week, a typical reading was : CPU: 19%, GPU: 58! I don't have anything on Ultra, but a number on High. Maybe I could move a few sliders to the right, but I'm not sure where best to spend the capacity. Hope this helps somebody out there. (BTW, I've had 2 CTDs in the past 2 months, and both of those were in the Aerobus H135 freeware helicopter.) My specs: i7-8700 3.7 GHz GeForce GTX 1070 Ti; 8GB onboard AORUS Z370 Gaming 5 LGA 1151 ATX motherboard 16GB RAM 2 TB hard drive 27” MSI gaming monitor
  4. Thanks, Steve. TheUKDave certainly is a thorough chap, isn't he? I turned my Game Mode back on.
  5. The Fly Away Manual, @ p. 208, recommends turning Game Mode OFF (on the stated assumption you have updated Windows and your GPU driver). They give no explanation. Can anybody tell me why this utterly counterintuitive rec makes any sense? Just askin'.
  6. O I C. I did see the "3D Settings" tab in the control panel. I did not look there because I somehow foolishly thought that "3D" meant "three-dimensional," like those movies and some computer graphics you look at through those funny glasses.
  7. Steve, As I said, "I limited my FPS to 30" in my Graphics setting. V-sync has to be on. Trouble is, the limit has no apparent effect.
  8. Years ago, some sage here told me that the human eye can't really discern differences in FPS much above 25, so I figured limiting my FPS would make little practical difference, while putting less strain on my GPU, and therefore helping to prevent CTDs and/or permitting sliders to go further to the right. So I limited my FPS to 30 (as I do in P3D). (Yeah, I know -- others here insist they can tell the difference between very high FPSs. Good for them.) Now that I've relearned how to check FPS (it used to be the Windows key + G; now that merely opens the xBox menu, where you have to click on the performance tab), I see that my FPS is substantially over 30: 50-60, usually. I have not had a CTD for over a month, since the hotfix amending the disastrous mandatory update on or about July 27. Someone else here told me not to limit FPS in the sim, but in my Invidia control panel. That didn't work, because I can't find any such adjustment in my Invidia control panel. So -- assuming limiting the FPS is a good idea for the reasons stated at the outset, how do you do it?
  9. Thanks again. (I thought I thanked you yesterday, but I don't see the post.) Also, for general info: This plane, purchased from the in-sim marketplace, downloads to the Official folder. Open it, look for the Documents folder, and it's in there.
  10. Thanks, zippy. I DLd it from that link. But "included in the software?" I bought this from the MS Store via the sim. I never saw the "software."
  11. Thanks. I just registered on that site, but it has not yet allowed me to ask a Q. Go figure. In the thread you link to, someone mentions that he/she "read the Manual." Where, where? Frustrating.
  12. For the price of about 3 martinis in a 2d-rate hotel bar, I just bought my first military jet, the F-14 Tomcat, from the MSFS store. Beautiful! Took off and headed west under a harvest moon. Okay. So, beyond that, can anyone tell me how to fly this beast? There's no manual, right? And nothing is like the usual planes in MSFS, both GA and commercial. No AP? No GPS?
  13. The add-on discussed in this thread, Global AI Ship Traffic MSFS v. 2 comes with instructions to turn your vessel traffic sliders down to 5-10% to avoid conflicts with the default ship traffic. I did that, and my first stop, the heavily-trafficked Dardanelles, displayed NO vessels whatsoever. So, casting the instructions aside, I turned my sliders up to 50-75% and had vessel traffic again. Can anyone explain this? Is the developer wrong?
  14. Yeah, but I wasn't complaining about the lack of ships mid-ocean. My example of the area around Istanbul is typical.
  15. Thank you KW. I have this add-on in P3D, and have been waiting for its announced conversion to MSFS. But I could never find whether it existed yet; and, if so, where it could be found. I just installed it and flew around Gibraltar. Much better! (I even saw a yacht with a wake! I understand wakes will be generally be added next month. And smoke? Oh, be still, my heart.)
  16. I've long been bothered by the near absence of vessel traffic in MSFS. I've seen a few, but very few, over the past year, and today I bought Vessels Enhanced AI from Orbx, hoping I'd see some improvement. I've also been told on this forum that you need to look carefully near major ports and sealanes, etc. So I just loaded at Istanbul, and flew the length of the Bosporus, then over the Golden Horn and out into the Sea of Marmara. Nary a ship or boat! I know from personal observation this area is teeming with vessel traffic of all sorts. My vessel traffic slider is at 100 percent. Is this a lost cause? Or am I missing something?
  17. Well, yeah. Will they be corrected in due course? Or does someone have to report them to Zendesk?
  18. From time to time, I have seen these anomalous spikes jutting out of the landscape. In the past few days, I've seen many in the Dolomite area of Italy. If you get closer to them, they disappear. Is this a glitch in the scenery that needs reporting to Zendesk, or is it just a normal, but ephemeral, distraction?
  19. So, are we alone? Actually, I did a few night flights since my post, and I have seen several moving lights in the sky. That's a good sign!
  20. It recently occurred to me that I haven't seen an AI plane in the air in over a week. There are plenty on the ground and at the gates, but nothing in the air. (I hear ATC talking to other planes, but I seldom see them.) In settings, AI traffic is surely set to ON (not Live), and density is at 100 percent! I assume there's a performance penalty with a lot of traffic, but this sparseness is totally unrealistic. Any ideas, guys? Or explanations? Thanks all. Mac6737
