  1. Right Larry, forums in avsim were active since 1996 when FS95 became popular and first payware and freeware addons were available. This is when the community really started. PC platform on the first intel or amd versions FS4 that came bundled with windows cannot be considered the start of the hobby, it was a mere curiosity and besides you cannot mention FS4 because it came standard with windows, was not a user option to say...hey Im gonna start simming and buy a flight simulator, no...it was there just as Solitaire card games are in windows today. The mother, the sister, the little baby, anyone trying the computer went for a taste of FS4
  2. does anyone know of a computer/console "game" that has a majority of users who are over 50 years old? challenge you, none. Only the flightsim community. Having said that, what do you think "an old guy" sits in front of a computer for? fly glass cockpits? of course not! he/she sims to remeber the ol days. Making a glass cockpit is easier and simple than an analog. Cause with analog you have to recreate the worn and many plugs of a classic cockpit, walls, panel etc. With the glass much of the space will be covered by the mfds so it saves art work there, plus the mfd is a ready made gauge by some third party, you just have to insert it in place. Much easier.
  3. i disagree. a) You dont realize the motive that drive people into the sim. Its a sim. And by this it means "simulate what no longer exists", there are those would be pilots that want a career, but most people want to recreate the golden years of travel, when flying really WAS a top class thing, i myself sim to remember my dad and recreate commmercial routes in his 727 707 or 747-200 carreer span. b) as you said: "a selection of both", my post was to point out they are all glass except one. Thats not a fair selection to compare it with reality most new cars are also glass cockpit like the Tesla. But we know the vast majority isnt
  4. It strikes as a reality that 80% or more of all GA aircraft you see around the world kn airfields and small airports have analog cockpits. Except perhaps in the US which sells new small planes more than others. In commercial aviation all OK, the standard today is Glass I wished MSFS2020 could have included more analog cockpits of GA, even the Cesna 172 now comes all Glass Thats not real. Out of all 172s flying around the world i bet 99.9% are analog!
  5. When people say..."Ive been simming since FS4", well they dont actually mean it or are exaggerating most of the times. Surely they had a try here and there but "active simmers?" ...very few. One way to check if you are really an old timer is a simple question: "Do you remember Simon...? not even myself recall his surname. This was a brit guy in mid 90s to early 2000s who was a "helper", apparently with time to spend online and was a computer and sim expert. He replied to most queries and had a vast knowledge and solutions to everything (Dreamfeet, Paul Golding days, et) The problem (not for me) was that he used humor in such a way that offended many. I never saw it as arrogance. As I see it, he wanted to make the helping job a bit more enjoyable looking at the funny side of ideas, which often meant pointing out the ridiculous of the question, or the nonsense of other proposed solutions. He did it to me many times, never got offended, thought he was funny and helpful, British humor. Unfortunately as political correctness grew people took it personally and he was eventually banned from both avsim, flightsim He never got well with moderators either. His name was tagged so it could not be mentioned in any post If you remember him, you were definitely around simming enough to get involved in forums and flightsim immersion
  6. Unfortunately the best is rare to be seen, Sidewinder FF2 by Microsoft, from the 90s, still using it (I tried all the saitek/logitech plastic ones) the sidewinder feels like it just by its weight.
  7. err...no, actually is not "a preference" its due to the user's system limitation, never a preference
  8. You are right there. But its the overall platform graphics, world, weather, cimate, aerodynamics, shadows, traffic, route live maps, etc that make it such a large difference that you dont feel the point of pressing the P3D.exe again. Yes, the good paywares and specially classic planes will be very much wanted. It will take even more than a year I know. Guess I will just spend that time learning the new sim and systems and flying stock planes or bush flying
  9. Yes, not 80s but early 90s Yes, you missed several Jetfighter I and II Falcon 3.0 Eurofighter Tornado and about 20 others that escape my mind right now but i surely played them all
  10. Me too in the beginning didnt know what that Pass meant I was reluctant to buy cause i thought i needed the Xbox console or an xbox monthly fee. Microsoft should be more clear about it. Tons of people want anything to do with Xbox. My kids have xbox, its just a console game, useless and joystick dependant. Simmers deal with PCs and have many PC interactive during a simulation process, like consulting websites, forums, windows programs that help this or that feature etc. Make it two different ticking boxes, one for PC another for xbox. That would be the decent thing to do. We dont need all that xbox subliminar inducing propaganda
  11. In the simulator hobby its not the sim you need to master, you need to be an advanced PC user and know how to manually manage folders, installs, etc. Think of the PC as your MFD in a real plane. If you dont master your on-board computer, you cant fly
  12. I'm thinking of uninstalling P3D I have a total of 500gb in ssd and thou still have space for MSFS2020 in the 1 tera ssd i would like to do a clean format for the august 18th release. There is no motivation to use p3d knowing a better sim will be out, i have pre-ordered msfs2020 and now just need to wait few weeks Its a whole new platform that will require its learning curve getting used to menus and configs. I thought of keeping the payware plane addons but it seems obvious they (or any scenery) will not be compatible. The orders will always be available at the payware site for re-downloading but like I have seen in the past, owing a licence will be of no use cause the argument for all companies is "its a complete different platform and we had to build the addon from scratch so you have to pay the full price...again" fair enough, but then why should i keep P3d installed? or Xplane if you own that. Any good reasons?
  13. With other countries, like Brazil, its cheaper even thou brazilian currency is much less than the dollar. I paid R$ 199.00 which is equivalent to 45 dollars if I would have to exchange the money at the bank or pay by international credit (they charge an additional tax when you pay overseas), so... move on...there are plenty of cases, nothing of the sort of a ripoff like you suggest
  14. Not available anymore, maybe sold to a larger biz or closed
  15. I was wishing for a much promised Caravelle by Just Flight or 707 by captainsim but what developper would serioulsy invest on addon when MS Flight is on alpha testing? No more new planes folks
  16. Im calm I loved the preview with all the Bing landclass 3d images streamed online, (not only will require a power PC but the best internet you can sign), but the planes, as you saw, and as we have seen in the MS Flight (also loved the previews back then) attempt were basic single engine, probably because the people involved in the project are all taking flying lessons in just that, so thats what they can put in the game. The problem we love to fly all sorts of complex plane and flying procedures, specially comms offline. Meaning I want to be able to fly and communicate with tower for instrument approaches in a more reallistic way than the current "fly runway heading..." or "clear to land" As for the terrain graphics, we have the stream thing since Tileproxy back in 2002, thou not in 3D And to leave the sim ready to complex payware addons that will need all the physics as real as possible for the cockpit addon to calculate or consider. But...if people programming the game are just ultra light weekend gliders... gaming will suffer. What is P3d? its a sim by aviation people (Lockheed Martin) with aviation oriented goals. Thats why it has endured. However, they are stuck with the old fsx core. No pilots or retired aviation engeneers and pilots involved? No future for the game as a sim.
  17. Read today a front page feature in CNN site I was appalled that the CEO of the company in partner with Microsoft developping the game said: "I started taking flying lessons so I could better understand the principles of flying that we are going to have to put in the game" I thought WHAAAT? taking flying lessons only now? You dont get a grip of aviation by just starting to take an interest on it Aviation develops in each one of us since we are kids...not to mention airline Captain, comms, regulations, weather... A fresh PP has not even 5% of the notion about flying, a sophisticated simulator requires experienced pilots or retired pilots in the making, not just a s Beta testers!!
  18. Thanks Loki. OK. will open a thread and look at cooling hardware. Edit> Just restarted and went to BIOS. Temp target was at 60 C, and minimum fan speed was at 0 zero. I changed it to tem target 50 C and minimum fan speed 50% Now temp at idle is at 52 C. But fan is working at slow speed all the time. Is this target ok? regards K
  19. Kosta, Here are 2 pictures, first with fsx off, then fsx on Do you see anything abnormal? Why is core 3 and 4 at 100% ?
  20. Kosta, My CPU is AMD Phenom II Black x 4 965 3.4ghz (this is said to be compared to Intel i5) 8mb ram GPU Nvidia GTX 550ti, I see the 4 cores in Task Manager. I use FSX since 2006, Until 2011 I had a 2 core slower intel processor. Its true that settings couldnt be maxed and fps was slower in ense arival areas, but the processor never spinned with such furor. What is bothersome is the noise. Temperatures are stable, right now as I right Core0 is 63, when running FSX it spins and can go up to 70 or 72. Unfortunately I was not monitoring temp when it quits in long hauls, it just turned off and I no way to know what temp it was. My affinitymask is at 14. No other programs running while fsx is on, Im good at this, My install is very clean and I dont let unnecessary process running in task manager. Temperature here in Brazil is around 28 to 30. I remember in colder days in winter when it was 15 it didnt spin as much. Anyway this spinning only happens with fsx or when converting videos. Regards Kap
  21. Thanks for your atention, I will look into better cooling resources. The temperature turn off happens sometimes on long haul flights. I have affinitymask set at 14 but my cpu makes intermittent spinning noise hard during most fsx flight, which I find it strange because with my older two core cpu, didnt. K
  22. Hi Kosta, I used your tweaks and its made a good difference. Only I feel FSX makes temp go up and fan spins vigorously, and when making long haul flights many times the computer just turns off in cruise flight. Settings are nearly all either maxed or 80%. Whic I should bring down to ease the temp? My specs. I have no overclock AMD Phenom II x 4 3.4 Ghz 8gb ram Nvidia GTX 550 Ti in Win7 64bit 19 Samsung 23 inch with DVI conector

Mike, you must continue the story...now I want to know how it evolved. It requires a lot of self-confidence to build a comeback that way, tell us more!
  24. I had a Laser for ten years. In the early eighties the Sony walkman waterproof (yellow color) was release and I used to sail the Laser listnening to rock music and lando in the shores of small waves in a crowded beach. People looked at me in disbelief as they never thought one could go sailing wet and with a hi-fi portable in the waist. By the way, here in Brazil Laser is very popular, we have the 7 times world champion Robert Scheidt.
