1. the reason is because many airports do not have ILS. RNAVS don't need expensive ground based equipment, and are far more common. They are almost as good as an ILS (LPV is better), and the needles stay more constant. ILS is a radio frequency, so the needles can sway slightly like a VOR.

    thanks, i understand now

the needle factor must be a main factor, specially in bad weather, to avoid last minute corrections with a heavy jet full of passengers

  2. a question always wished to ask

if RNAV is a poor way of landing compared to ILS, why its so widely used?

Any airport that has RNAV also has ILS, when Im planning my flight, i see tons of option for RNAV in arrivals but when I see the ILS I say, to hell with rnav, im going with ILS...simple, gliding cue

Other than if the ILS equipment in the ground is INOP, what make airline companies policies, or captains, towers, or better..who determines what landing approach? tower control approach? or rather, when the pilot is programming his FMC at departure, he makes a choice of the star and approach, what makes him prefer a RNAV over an ILS?

  3. The Welcome Map is pretty complete you can choose routes origin destination Sids Stars, the only lacking as you say are the nav aid ils frequencies

shame, i guess the guy that planned it was only thinking GPS flying

But maybe in future they will add the frequencies indeed an info that is much needed

While external programs such as littlenavmap are nice, it would be great to be able to have complete flight plan info in-game

  4. HI Yoochem

I dont know about others, just my personal motive, I do not see simming as a "substitute" but it does fill the need many times of going places.

Being 60 and travelled a lot in the golden days 60/70/80/90s, travelling is not atractive (for me) anymore. Places are full of people, tourism is fake, artificial depiction of locations, there are no more "untouched cultures" where you can penetrate and discover, everywhere is full of tourists and social media has all the selfies and photos you can imagine. For the new generation, thats all they ve seen, all they got.

For me, Im from other times when you could backpack in Europe or hitchhike for 5 dollars a day, make friends, start relationships, go to places where they never saw a foreigner before...freedom, less burocracy, less "you cant go there", "you cant say that" its innapropriate" ...etc, in other words: The Current World"

Airplane travel itself sucks, no food, no sincere smiles or small talk, no change of cards, no fun. I do like simming recreating voyages but just the plane route since we are all aviation lovers here.

I think your assessment is correct, just wanted to add that because simming is a desktop hobby, it atracts many retired and mature adults that are sitting at home in their leisure time. Its possibly the ONLY computer game in the world that has so many mature fans that take a game seriously, and perhaps Im not mistaken to say we are a majority.

Its not a substitute, but its not a "wish I was travelling for real" either

    Hi everyone!

I've been doing some first analyses of the data that the survey is producing so far, and the results are very useful.

One of the more interesting things that I can see is that there is a statistical link between seeing MFS as travel inspiration and travel intention, while there is no link (one way or another) between seeing MFS as a travel substitute and travel intention.

In other words: if you get travel inspiration from MFS, you might want to travel more. But seeing MFS as a (very slight) form of travel on its own, does not affect your desire for real travel.

My question to anyone reading this is: what would be your presumed reason for this? Do you have any personal experiences with MFS and/or travel (ideas), that would explain this?

I have my own theories but I'd love to hear some input from the community!

  5. First, I'm pretty sure you are not the only one having that problem. I used a utility called Flight Recorder https://flightsim.to/file/8163/flight-recorder . I was able to replay the landing and view it from an external view. What I found was when using the FMC in the A320 the plane doesn't flair as expected. Instead, the plane touches down front wheel first. You can imagine the rest. Hope this helps, Happy flying.

I think flair is done by the pilot after the "retard" voice to reduce throttles, unless its an autoland

  6. these are the settings that I have found match my 172s handling in real life. it helps a ton with the landing control as well. set the same for any other joystick. For RUDDER PEDALS, set sensitivity -50% on both and add a 9% deadzone. this gives the most realistic result, as in real life Cessna's usually are a bit sluggish on the rudder. works well for the other aircraft as well. hope this helps.

many thanks!! will use your setting

  7. will add a bit more

the "Adventures" thats how they were called in the late XX century, were extremely well built...

if you got off-course a copilot voice would tell you a heading to correct it,

only when the plane was in a set of boundary latitude longitude limits of the waypoint the ATC Chatter would activatre with a REAL atc instruction to your plane towards the next waypoint, clear you to descend to another altitude, reduce speed, etc., all real atc instructions to that particular airline you are flying

I have searched and searched for new Missions/Adventures but this format was completely lost and developpers arent unable to catch it anymore

It seems as a new developper generation got into the market they were completely ignorant of the standard we had in the past and introduced low quality adventures in the next versions of P3D, late FSX, and MSFS2020...ZERO adventures so far.

Apparently developpers thought it was "ok" to have ATC recorded by the author´s voice at home...in a total clumsy and unreal atmosphere

And users, by not knowing what we had in the distant past, take them from granted as "thats the way missions come"

    They shouldnt

An atc instruction can never be emulated in a room by some amateur, in needs all the static and variables of a real world communication and phrasing. Yes, there is a standard phrasing but if you just use the official standard phrasing you will get MS computer atc voice, which is also a joke. Real life carries a mixture of standard atc language plus uncontrollable variables due to the day, pilot, weather, ...due to life

  8. yes, i know ATC chatter and used it a lot in the past since it came out,...i dont know, early 2000s

still, external programs are fine but require one more preparation step in the make believe.

What I mean is a complete mission, usually approaches, replicating a real life flight with its real ATC

    https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=84228393

take a look at author Fermin Fernandez

these are excellent approaches that include the actual ATC instructions for each part of the approach *plus the background chatter and radio noise which is typical in aviation

There is also an italian guy, Patrizio Migliola that did similar approaches and complete flights with Alitalia

    its a complete different story

its not a background chatter that you KNOW they are not talking to you and never will

In these missions you must listen carefully because one of those ATC chats might be directed to you, mentioning your airline and flight number, so you LIVE the mission in a very realistic mood

gives you a wonderful immersion feeling

  9. No Mission will be good and usable until dev understands that REAL ATC chatter and voices are essential for mission immersion

In the past, FS9 and FSX there were excellent missions with REAL atc audios.

I wrote to the original developpers and they said are unable to port it to MSFS due to changes in file format missions

    shame

There are few things that irritate me more than computed generated voices or some guy at home recording audios

  10. taking a few secs to reply ...dont agree with any of the suggestions, but each person has motives...

    My reply woulde be:

If you are a pilot, fine. If you are not...

Why are you simming? Why did you install the sim? Are you an aviation lover and fan for your whole life?

Did you know all the model plane names of your time as a kid? did you read about aviation in your spare time?

    What drives you?

If you found this game from internet ads or you saw it somewhere and decided to give it try...probably there is no answer to your question

Each aviation lover using this sim will know what he loves to do within the sim, hundreds of variants.

Your aviation interest and love should guide you

If you dont know...just look for another game

  11. This comment is complete rubbish and is probably a good explanation of exactly why women aren't flocking to flight sim forums to pursue simming as a hobby. I am not in the aviation world so I don't know as many people in it of either gender. But whenever I see a man pontificating about what he perceives women's "motivations" to be in other aspects of life, the ease with which to disprove such nonsense is comical.

The women I know in my profession, and also my other hobby in the music world, kick some serious ass and are rock stars.

what you say is nonsense and by know means proves nothing

I am a darwinist observer of reality and reality is all i see

whos talking about music? music doesnt count because they do LOVE and are PASSIONATE about music

    we re talking planes here

come up with an on topic point into the debate

appreciate the "I know one lady thats different..."

we all do, exceptions confirm the rule

the chance of flying with a female pilot in your next flight is high, there are many many of them employed in airlines

All proud of....their job...wearing the pilot suit and showing thay are just as pro...and they are!! no doubt, excellent airline pilots

but not because of their passion of aviation

    and will add more:

female pilot career took a boost as the profession got more a system operator of company procedures MFDs turning knobs etc

in the past when flying was more in the hand and navigation in the head, few ventured

like racing cars for example...its not that there arent any with passion for flying, its just not the majority

  12. No, Im not gonna use the freeware Flight Recorder that has tons of limitations, only can do this and that x, y axes, provided you turn off this and that...its crazy, complicated, boring, unusable

If MS listens: we can do without some new scenery region addon in the next updates provided you concentrate on Instant Replay.

Everytime I fly I go through a lot of work and planning...and the reward is the replay. Relaxing to see your flight, specially approach and landings.

Plus COMPLETE aircraft from addon dev would be nice. How I miss Captainsim planes in fsx or p3d that you could actually use the stairs and get into the plane, use the toilet, open close doors... here we are in the latest sim unable to do things were available in 2006, we are stuck in just a cockpit, only two or three for airliners, feels like single front view like ol fs98 2d, the rest of the plane doesnt exist...pretend it does say some resignated users

well, 3d models are there, people just need time to do the full plane i guess

  13. meaning ladies rarely love aviation

most that get into pilot career are just chosing a profession and the most part they enjoy about and are proud of?

working in a traditional "men" job. Thats all their motive...to prove they can do it, to feel proud about their gender feminism, its just a job

no love for aviation or passion for old calssic jets of golden era, like we guys spend hours, days reading, collecting, etc

  14. I completely agree.

Probably that's why my current favorite airplane in MSFS is the Grumman Goose... and it's freeware!!

    thanks for mentioning, its true

the Grumman Goose is a complete classic with original analog cockpit

the only freeware addon (and among paywares the 2 from Carenado)

the rest are "easy" releases. Either exterior models using the A320 or experimental aircraft with easy cockpit (just an MFD)

meaning these are released by non-professional developpers, just guys that join pieces from other models.

  15. will clarify

If you go to the File Library here at flightsim.com that has thousands of addons since the nineties, everything goes. You can make anything flyable. Some users have made UFOs, even boxes or washing machines flyable. Its a sim.

    Its pretending.

Once you have a marketplace or developpers for the hobby that have addressed and launched nearly all the great names of aviation...nobody minds if they add more...more experiemental, gliders, rotorcrafts, acrobacy, etc...there are many kinds and types of flying machines.

What i was saying is that we need "planes" !! the traditional ones...first!

    We are lacking planes...

And the fact you see many experimemtals is because developpers dont have to care much about realism, since nobody has good visual life reference of them (because they are lesser known) or because they only use a big MFD so the cockpit is just that.

I repeat what i said elsewhere, if aviation turns to be a Tesla automated car, it will be the end of simming. Nobody wants to launch the sim, press a button and let the computer do all the flying, or feed the FMC etc.

It works well for training, and surely fits the experimetal owners for this...

But for a vast majority, like with cars, you will find the aviation lovers, collectors, those that want the machines that made our history

  16. About experimetal planes

Lets make an analogy with automobiles

Say this sim was about cars and collector fans of simulating and driving them

You would want the famous brands that made history, our human legacy

BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Ferrari, Chrysler, Honda, Mercedes, Renault, and other dozens of great makes.

Then come the folks that made custom cars in their backyard, of all sorts, types and forms...and say "hey look at my great plane"

I wish they can put it in the Marketplace

    whaaat? come on!
