jgf
KTDW-0E0, 242 miles using 35% fuel; made decent time considering the last half of the flight we were barely making 144kt gs. Due to altitude takeoff run was a bit longer than I'm accustomed to, but I remembered the timer (something I'll probably be doing for ages now). 9:36AM Uneventful flight til I noticed the ground getting a bit close for comfort, took her up to 7500ft, soon saw either a very tall radio antenna or the ground is swelling again. Up to 8k ft, about as high as she likes to go (anything over 7k is full throttle time); speed down to 129kt. I have an acrophobic Bonanza. Touchdown at 0E0 in 1:28.56; at these altitudes landing is a bitch - one notch of flaps, keep the speed up, and land a bit hot, or two notches of flaps for better touchdown speed but feel you're piloting a falling leaf. And off to park Shutdown at 1:33.01
ScottishMike
Sunday (12th.) and we both felt rested after our few days off. “The weather forecast is good.” I waved the reports at Suzanne. “Shall we go for the next leg? You feel up to it?” She asked. “Rockys in November, might not get another break in the weather for days. Let's go for it.” I replied. “OK, I'll prepare two flight plans, might as well go all the way to Flagstaff if conditions stay good.” Enthusiasm in her voice. “I'll prep the plane.” I added. Lift off! And on our way to Albuquerque. However conditions not as good as the weather reports suggested: Approaching Albuquerque and conditions have improved: Skirting the sacred mountain, following roads and railway to overhead Grants: Beautifully uneventful flight. We both decided to overfly Gallup (KGUP) and continue on for Flagstaff. Overhead Gallup, time 11:35 (17:35 GMT): Crisp, cold and clear, following Route 66 over the high plateau. Great flying conditions: Approaching Flagstaff: Cleared for straight in Flagstaff Rwy210: Almost there: Touch down: Results: Leg 7 0E0 Moriarty-->KGUP Gallup Plan 1hr 35min Actual 1hr 33min VAR: 2min Leg 8 KGUP Gallup-->KFLG Flagstaff Plan 1hr 28min Actual 1hr 26min VAR: 2min
jgf
0E0-KGUP, 167 miles ...over the mountains. Early afternoon start, clear skies, planned on flying around 7500ft. But the ground kept getting closer, and this old girl wouldn't like getting her belly scraped out in the middle of nowhere, so up to 8500ft we go, through a pass in the mountains. She moaned and groaned and shuddered at the thought of running full throttle so long, but we both underestimated her abilities. Through the pass and over the plains beyond, startling a Boeing that took off to the west. Planned to drop back to 7500ft but the map showed 8000ft mountains ahead before reaching KGUP, so up to 9200ft. Barely managing 21mp now, floorboards throbbing with the engine, but she's still good for 133kt, 152kt gs. At least this scenery is more interesting than those flat plains of the past few days. Pick up the KGUP ILS 33miles out, not far now, and I'll only have a 3000ft descent to land. No ill effects from our full throttle run other than slightly elevated oil temps, a full oil change tonight should placate her. A smooth approach after her high altitude adventure and touchdown at 58.47 shutdown at
