  7. CFS Royal Aircraft Factory RE8

CFS Royal Aircraft Factory RE8. The RE8 was the successor of the BE2 series, but was not considered much of an improvement. The observer's position was now behind the pilot, improving his field of fire, and the RE8 was faster. However, the cowling structure badly limited forward visibility, making the machine especially difficult to land. The plane received the nickname the "Harry Tate" for the British comedian of the era. The RE8 flew the bulk of British reconnaissance missions in the last 18 months of the war. By P.C.B. Russell.

  15. CFS Breguet 14.B2

CFS Breguet 14.B2. 96th U.S. Bombardment Squadron, 1918. Most American fliers in France during World War I actually flew British- or French designed machines. The Breguet 14 was one of the latter. One U.S. bombing squadron, the 96th, was equipped with these heavy aircraft, and operated extensively against German targets in the last months of the war. The Breguet first flew in 1916, and gradually replaced the obsolete Voisin and Caudron bombers in French service. The Breguet 14 was hardly a beautiful aircraft, being big and boxy, but it was sturdy and reliable. Numerous aircraft of this type were taken up as surplus after the war and used successfully for airmail and courier service. By Keith Schevling and Andrew W. Hall.
