FSX Scenery--RAF Shepherds Grove. UK. RAF Shepherds Grove is a former Royal Air Force station located 9.9 miles (15.9 km) northeast of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. The Station was originally built for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Eighth Air Force during the Second World War. However the facility was not used by the USAAF and was opened by No. 3 Group RAF on 3 April 1944.The name came from a small copse nearby and the airfield is close to Walsham le Willows in Suffolk. It was occupied by No. 196 Squadron RAF in January 1945 as a base for Operation Varsity, supporting the Rhine crossing. Various American units occupied the station after WW2 but ended their use of the unit in December 1958. On 22 July 1956, No. 82 Squadron RAF was activated at Shepherds Grove as a Thor missile unit. Thor launching sites were built on the main airfield and became operational in 1959. The base was closed in 1966. By Terry Boissel.

FSX Scenery--RAF Melbourne, UK. East Common just outside the village of Seaton Ross was requisitioned for use as a grass airfield in November 1940. In late 1940 the airfield was used by Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys of 10 Squadron as a relief landing ground for RAF Leeming. The airfield soon closed for re-development as a standard Bomber Command airfield with three concrete runways and three hangars. In May 1945 the airfield was transferred to RAF Transport Command and 575 Squadron moved in with the Douglas Dakota. The squadron only stayed for a few months operating transport flight to and from continental Europe. With the departure of the Dakota a number of specialised Flights used the airfield for six months but by the middle of 1946 the airfield was no longer used for flying. By Terry Boissel.

Work started at RAF Manby in the mid thirties as part of the RAF expansion scheme, however, it was not a typical station of the time in so much as it only supported two grass runways. This did not detract from it contribution to the war effort however. Opening in 1938 the unit will be remembered by many as a training station for armament officers, armourers swell as aircrew such as air gunners and bomb aimers. The station continued with its training role until its closure in 1974. By Terry Boissel.

  9. FSX Scenery--RAF Kirton in Lindsey

FSX Scenery--RAF Kirton in Lindsey, UK. It appears to have been an RAF habit (inherited from the RFC) to name its bases after the nearest railway station, possibly to simplify the process of issuing Rail Warrants to personnel posted there. By that token, the site should be RAF Kirton Lindsey, Kirton Lindsey being the name of the nearby railway station constructed in 1849. No. 255 Squadron's Operations Record Book (ORB) consistently uses that version of the name. So does the airfield's separate ORB, from the date of the sites WWII creation (15 May 1940) through to May 1941. After mid-1941 and the departure of No. 255 Squadron, use of RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey. Kirton in Lindsey begins to appear in the sites own records, eventually dominating. On 25 March 2013 it was announced to dispose of the airfield and technical facilities with only accommodation remaining. The airfield used to host No. 1 Air Control Centre (1ACC), the RAF's only deployable ground-based early warning and air control radar unit, which was parented by RAF Scampton The Station has had a varied selection of personnel occupying it, the RFC, RAF, USAAF, and before becoming an RAF Station for the last time it was the home of the Royal Artillery Regiment responsible for operating the Rapier sam. The Station finally closed in 2013. By Terry Boissel.

  10. FSX Scenery--RAF Dunholme Lodge Update

FSX Scenery--RAF Dunholme Lodge Update UK. This is an-update to correct the location of the tower; if you have installed the version uploaded on the 15 or 23 October 2015. RAF Dunholme Lodge was a Royal Air Force station located between the parishes of Welton and Dunholme in Lincolnshire, England. The grass airfield was first used by the Royal Air Force during 1941 and 1942 for use by Handley Page Hampden aircraft from nearby RAF Scampton, and was officially opened as a RAF Station in September 1942 as part of RAF Bomber Command with the building of three hard runways. The main occupier of the station was 44 Squadron, with the Avro Lancaster four-engined heavy bomber, which moved in from RAF Waddington in May 1943 and stayed until it moved to RAF Spilsby in September 1944. In November 1944 flying operations ceased due the proximity of other stations which did not allow night flying. At the end of the war 120 Lancasters had been lost on operations from Dunholme Lodge. From 1948 the site was host to motorcycle and car racing until 1959 when the base was reopened as an active RAF station when it became an active Bloodhound surface-to-air missile station with 141 Squadron. The Squardron in 1964 and the station finally closed in 1964. By Terry Boissel.

  13. FSX Scenery--RAF Cammeringham

FSX Scenery--RAF Cammeringham UK (formerly RAF Ingham) was a Royal Air Force station used by RAF Bomber Command between 1940 and 1945 and the Polish Air Force until 1946. The airfield was located between the A15 (Ermine Street) and B1398 roads, 10.3 mi (16.6 km) north of the county town Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England and due east of the village of Ingham. Mainly used as an overflow airfield for nearby RAF Hemswell and later as a training establishment, its continued use was limited by damage to its grassed runways. The airfield closed in early December 1946. The site had been considered as a potential stand-alone airfield as early as 1936 but building did not commence until 1940 when RAF Hemswell needed additional capacity during the expanding World War II bomber offensive. Initially no squadrons were based at the station and it was used exclusively by Hemswell as an overflow site. Detailed surveys were undertaken in preparation for the building of the concrete runways then needed for heavy bombers, but it was decided that the contour gradients were unsuitable and the runways remained grass only. However between 1940 and 1942 a concrete perimeter track was constructed, together with three hangars (1 x B1 and 2 x T2 types) and a technical site. A total of 36 pan-type aircraft standings were constructed in two phases. By Terry Boissel.

Opening for business in late September of 1943 the first Sqn to be based at the station was actually formed there (No 625) and became operational in mid October 1943 and was undertaking their first operational tour with 9 Lancasters bombing Hanover afew nights later. As with many RAF Stations, of the era, RAF Kelstern was placed on care and maintenance and finally closed in August 1946.The Station was sold off to various farmers during the 60s with very little left to show of an active airfield. The station has been given the ICAO code of EGAM as that code is currently vacant. Although the runways and peri track are pretty much as was, the tech and domestic areas although placed about the right location they are really included to give the station some body and appearance of an active airfield. 15. RAF Scenery--Elsham Wolds

RAF Scenery--Elsham Wolds, UK. An airfield was established at Elsham as early as December 1916 and used by C Flight of 33 squadron of the Royal Flying Corps From June 1918 to June 1919 it was also the squadron's headquarters. The site was the most northerly of three airfields, equally spaced between the cities of Hull and Lincoln for countering Zeppelin night raids. C Flight also acted as observers for the artillery batteries located at Spurn Head and Kilnsea. In the late 1930s with a new war on the horizon, extra airfields were again needed to accommodate an expansion of the RAF. Former First World War stations were surveyed for suitability, and an area just to the west of the original Elsham site was deemed to be better suited. work began in the winter of 1939-1940, and the station opened with the arrival in July 1941 of 103 Squadron. The station was equipped with a main runway 2,000 yards (1,829 m) long, and two subsidiaries of 1,600 yards (1,463 m) and 1,400 yards (1, 280 m). Three hangars (two T-2's and one J-Type) and 27 aircraft hardstands (later increased to 36) were built. Three more T-2 hangars were built in 1944. Accommodation for around 2,500 personnel was dispersed in the nearby farmland. By Terry Boissel.

  19. FSX Scenery--RAF Faldingworth

FSX Scenery--RAF Faldingworth, UK. RAF Faldingworth was a Royal Air Force station used during and after the Second World War. It was located close to the village of Faldingworth in Lincolnshire, England. It was used during the war by number 300 (Polish) Squadron and a memorial is now in place to them at the end of the main runway. Faldingworth entered service life as Toft Grange decoy airfield and later as a satellite airfield of RAF Lindholme. Late in 1943 it became a satellite of RAF Ludford Magna. After the war the base was used for storage of weapons. In 1957 the site became a nuclear weapons store for the RAF V bomber force. In times of crisis nuclear weapons from the site would be distributed to the nearby v-bomber airfields such as RAF Scampton, RAF Finningley and RAF Coningsby. With the transfer of the UK nuclear deterrent role to the Royal Navys Resolution class submarines in 1968 the site was run down and finally de-activated in 1972. Current Ordnance Survey maps show the remains of a typical wartime bomber airfield, with the former storage site overlaying the south-western part of the airfield, about 1.25 miles (2 km) east of Spridlington. There is a cluster of RAF-built housing north-east of the airfield area, sold to The Welbeck Estate Group in 1979 and a group of RAF buildings used as an industrial estate. By Terry Boissel.
