Austin,TX to Lake Charles,LA

My ancient computer quit talking to the internet, but it still works, so I took the opportunity to make it a dedicated simulator. FS2020 is getting all the attention, but FS9 is still fun for some of us. I had to re-learn the keyboard commands and yoke buttons (and how to get to the map and GPS) because I'm that rusty, but a little research helped.   I am flying from my old home in Texas to my new one in Florida in a Cherokee Six (PA32). I never flew this route for real, and my old Saratoga is

Linksys Velop 6 MX5

Well I guess I'm set for FS2020 in a week.... BUT! In looking at all the requirements for this new FS, I see suggestions of upgrades to the WIfI internet connections with new WiFi Routers, such as Linksys Velop 6 MX5. Is anyone else considering these options? A bit expensive at $400, but might be worth it to get a higher Bandwidth.

Easy Steps To Create a Safe and Efficient Airway

Being the person responsible for maintaining an airway can come with a lot of responsibility. Not only must you make sure that the airway is clean and organized, a failure to take certain steps can also lead to potentially dangerous consequences. This means it is important for you to go above and beyond when inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the various components of the strip. Of course, it can always be useful to gain a little bit of guidance along the way. There’s a lot to remember, an

Adventures of the Virtual Pilot

Adventures of a Virtual Pilot has turned my FSX into the visual part of a continuing story, or group of stories about a pilot. It availabe on YouTube, if any one is interested in seeing them. There is no spoken voice, but there is text in different fonts or colors, or both to distinguish who is talking. Here is the link to my page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVFp5AMvH7qMutGbDd6d7Yg?disable_polymer=true   I hope you enjoy the stories and video. Comments are welcome.

To Simming and Vacation

Over the last year I have had a really good time with FSX. I accomplished around the world flight in the Honda Jet. Thanks for a fellow simmer providing me the airports that the real world pilot did. I did a few modifications of the destinations. All in all it was quite an adventure to see what pops up in FSX going to places I've never been before.   Then I did a tour of the mediterranean in a single engine turbo prop. There was some amazing scenery with all the islands to visit. I neve

Back in the Cockpit

I flew the sim for the 1st time in about a year. (FS2004, aka FS9, aka A Century of Flight) I have recently retired and moved to Florida, so I wanted to explore the area from the air. The program took forever to load on my ancient pc, but eventually I took off from Ocala in a Cherokee 6. Instead of my normal CH yoke, I had plugged in my Logitech joystick. I soon learned that I had forgotten the functions of multiple buttons (and even keyboard controls!) Throttle and stick. I turned east and soo

Goodbye Old Friend

N8439T 6/30/92 - 12/05/19   This was an article I never wanted to write. Last week I was forced to sell my airplane after 27 years of ownership and something like 1400 hours in the pilot's seat. Unfortunately, running a flightsim fan site is no way to get rich and the past couple of years have been especially tough.   As a new pilot in 1991 I quickly got tired of renting and started looking for a plane of my own. The FBO at KOWD actually included an aircraft broker who went looking for me. Aft

Why Flightsimming Is Better Than Real Flying

Here's why flightsimming is better than real flying:     While I admire those developers who create planes that require a real preflight inspection and keep track of the aircraft maintenance, there are days when I'd gladly give up that realism when at the airport, and just jump in the plane and go as you can do with a flightsim plane.   Winter seems to have come early this year, and that's a good foot of wet heavy snow that has to be removed. I'd rather be flying than shoveling!       T

Flight Simulator 2020

It's been a long time since I have logged onto this site. I am beyond excited that we have a new version coming out next year. I started out with Bruce Artwick's Flt Sim back in 1981 back before Microsoft got involved. Most likely some of you all weren't even born yet. How many of you remember FS 1.0?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

I have been watching with baited breath concerning MS2020 and what the program may bring to the flight simulator world. I'm still working to get signed up on the "Insider" page but I have to set up a Microsoft account in Windows 10 and been trying to avoid it for the longest time. I suppose I should breakdown and just make it so.   When I see screen shots like this:     it just seems unreal that the technology has come this far. There is a Facebook page also dedicated to MS2020. I have b

How The H*ll Did That Happen?!?!

Hello! Welcome back to my blog, today I'm going to be talking about how the h*ll a British Airways airplane not only landed at a wrong airport, or wrong city, but the plane landed in the wrong COUNTRY! It was supposed to land in Germany, instead it landed in Scotland. Article/Resources: https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/uk-british-airways-flight-lands-in-edinburgh-scli-gbr-intl/index.html Apparently, there was an incorrectly filed flight plan, and instead of Germany, it was filed to go to Ed

4 Reasons Why The 737 MAX Should've Been Grounded Much Earlier

Hello! Today on my blog I am going to be listing four reasons why the Boeing 737 MAX should've been grounded much earlier than it was. We all know the whole crisis going on with Boeing and people accusing them of not giving their 737 MAX pilots enough training, faulty software (MCAS) etc. etc. Obviously it was the right decision to ground them, but they should've been grounded much, much earlier. Here's why:   1.) The first 737 MAX flight was on January 29, 2016. The first incident - and this

How to Fly an ILS Approach and Perform an ILS Landing (FSX)

Hey flight simmers, I know this is a blog, and this isn't really a blog entry, but it's a tutorial! So please, read on. This is a tutorial on how to fly an ILS (Instrument Landing System) approach in FSX, for this example, in the default FSX Boeing 737-800. So let's get started!   Hit "Alt", go to "World", and click on "Map". You'll see a, well, map of your plane and your surroundings. Using the little +- zoom in/out buttons, you can zoom in and out on the map, and to go around the map, just p

My Review of the PMDG 737NGX

Hey flight simmers, I recently bought the PMDG 737NGX. I've visited the cockpit of the Boeing 737NG many times and the 737 is one of my favorite planes, and the 737NG cockpits are my favorite cockpits. I like the default 737 in FSX, but it just isn't realistic enough, I don't LOVE it as much as I LOVE the actual 737NG in real life. Then came the PMDG 737-800/900 Base Package For FSX. I just HAD to buy it when it came out. I saw the videos, pics, screenshots, etc., but would it live up to my ex

JD-Slow-Thumbs, Found A Big Wind Tunnel

I think I found a wind-tunnel, a big wind-tunnel. I was trying to figure out how to setup and document a KF-airfoil experiment tied to the front of my car without something breaking lose and breaking my windshield. Then I thought about indoor skydiving. Looked on Google-Maps for any indoor skydiving places near me in Los Angeles. Decided to investigate the iFLY Ontario. I talked to one of the managers and one of the instructors and instead of shutting me down they seemed receptive to my i

Upgrade Your Simulator or Tweak What You Have?

I have been researching and reading flight simulator forums for many, many moons. Besides the usual simulator problems and issues, I have been seeing a common thread lately. The advances in flight simulator technology is leaping forward at a pretty good pace as is computer hardware. I thought it would be interesting to start a conversation on how we as a community are going to approach this awesome advance. When you look at the forum section of flightsim.com you see the following sections:

Flight Simulator - A Hobby, a Teaching Tool or a Passion?

I guess from the early days of subLOGIC, those of us interested in aviation either training to become licensed pilots or to those who wanted be but for some reason or another could not, the demand for a PC based flight simulator was born.     I started flying at about the age of 13-14 years old and eventually saw myself flying for the Air Force and then on to the airlines. Unfortunately my health brought those dreams to an end. Luckily for a while I was able to fly civilian until the last f

JD-Slow-Thumbs, Introduction

Hi, I am JD-Slow-Thumbs, As a kid I was always fascinated with airplanes and wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. I joined the USAF and served for four years. Occasionally I dabbled in Flight sims. Later I got into R/C airplanes, first fixed-wing ParkFlyers, and then foam board micros, and R/C flight sims of course. I am spending more of my time in flight simulators, FSX currently, and getting pretty good at reading charts and hopping from one VOR beacon to another. Now I am working

Battle For The Airfield

This has been a good week for me being at aviation events. I previously reported on my B-25 ride and then the weekend comes and it's time for the annual "Battle For The Airfield" at the Collings Foundation HQ not far from where I live. Since 1979 the Collings Foundation has assembled a collection of classic cars, historic aircraft and more recently military vehicles. The large bombers tour all around the country, some of the other flybable planes are based in warmer regions than New England, but

A Sad and Historic (For All The Wrong Reasons) Day For UK Civil Aviation.

As the UK wakes up today on October 2nd 2017 we are being greeted by some extremely sad news: Monarch Airlines (ZB or MON) has ceased operations and is in administration. Monarch was the UK's fifth largest carrier and it's failure has stranded an estimated 110,000 people overseas. It is the largest UK carrier to enter administration whereas last year it came upon the very brink of collapse but was saved at the last minute by a new investor.   The Final Monarch Flights For Me On FS2004 / FS9.
