How do you keep FSX interesting?

Recommended Posts

Glad you enjoyed it!

For a modern look at old style VFR flying go to Wikipedia and read about the Paro Bhutan Airport.try the Khatmandu to Paro flight. Paro is a VFR only airport. Put a 737 or similar plane there without crashing the 1st time & you're a real simmer!

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

I nailed Paro on the first try with the default 738 but I watched a RW video first and studied the approach a while before trying. I also landed very light with an empty airplane and probably not enough fuel to make a go-around which was highly unrealistic I'm sure. May have been a little luck involved too. In those days I was "keeping FS9 interesting".

I still think the checkerboard approach into Kai Tak with a moderately heavy 767 was harder, very difficult to time the turn just right to roll out on the rwy centerline. Probably actually a lot harder to do in the sim than it was the real world I'm thinking. I saved a flight on the IGS somewhere near the new VHHH and flew that one for a week before I finally nailed it. I see what they meant when they said you could look into the apartment windows and see people sitting in their living rooms watching TV, wow! What an interesting chunk of aviation history though... :)

Find some info on the approach zippy, you have to sort of descend into the canyon and make a turn onto final at the last minute. Somewhere on YT is also a cool video from the cockpit of a 737 I think, it was neat, worth the search for sure. There are no downwind or base legs here, lol. What scenery is that BTW? I had a payware something or other for FS9 that was really good but I haven't found anything for FSX (well, maybe I could actually try looking for one, but... :) )

This is my current FSX stable consisting partly of stock FSX kites, but most are freeware addons, and only 3 are payware.

A lot are FS2004 but they work fine in FSX with a bit of tweaking.

Some only have partial panels but I fly in spot view most of the time so it's no big deal

That's great but where is the hot air balloon ?

To keep FSX interesting I work really hard to only use techniques and conditions that only real pilots use or would experience. It's not possible to do this 100% of the time but it's my default.

Probably the biggest help to me is that I mostly fly multiplayer with a friend of 40 years, who I used to fly for in the '70s. We fly different areas (a lot of it in ORBX, but not all), fly a lot of formation, put on airshows for each other, comment on the various things we see, often relating them to the real world, enjoying the scenery and looking for small strips we've not been to before, etc.

Also, we've collaborated on making an add-on or two for ourselves, enhanced various airports, etc.

I fly 'relief missions' to real world current events. I never know where I am headed next. Generally I stay in the United States but go to South America too.

This gets you to locations/airports you might never go to otherwise.

Say I am headed to Chili for earthquake relief; first I go to see if there is any freeware scenery enhancements and install them.

As I primarily fly the DC-6; I load up with 5000# of supplies and go.

Off load the cargo and fly back empty with maybe a side trip stop back.

Ever since I was a kid (born in 1935) I loved airplanes..

Amazing, somebody older than me here! (I'm 1948 vintage)..:)

Speaking of vintage there are some nice photo-threads over at Mission4Today-

But for a real challenge crank down the visibility slider and try not to bump into any mountains-

(Note you can crank it down in any weather, even a clear summers day to instantly produce mist or fog)

Well, you can imagine what I CAN do by looking what the sim has to 'offer' as far as 'aircraft' is concerned in MY FSX. This FUN hangar took a LOT of work to establish. But I never get bored, that for sure.

Oh, and since we might take note of 'age': I am 74 1/2 yrs old. And I DO NOT have ANY 'payware' (aircraft or programs-except FRAPS and WinZip). You can't 'buy' FUN!!!
