This scenery is for the Expeditionary Airfield located at MCB Twenty-nine Palms CA (NXP). It improves upon the vacant default airfield and removes the non-existent default hangars. The rendition is based upon personal experience while flying at NXP throughout the 1980’s. I have attempted to recreate the look and feel of this airfield as it appeared during many Combined Arms Exercises (CAX), when there was much activity at the airfield and surrounding area. Added are parking for combat, cargo, and general aviation aircraft. And for the ground-ponders, there are some ground units in the exercise corridor, 7 miles NE of the airfield. Additional scenery libraries are required for all objects to appear. The enclosed notecard lists install instructions and the list of libraries, with links for download. 2. /images/notams/notams22/tabu1019.jpgMeshXP California West Nevada is compiled from 10 m resolution data to make high resolution terrain mesh for X-Plane 12. MeshXP function is to add elevation points to the terrain to further increase precision; shaping valleys and mountains as real as it gets. This mesh can be used on its own or underneath photo realistic scenery of any kind. It uses X-Plane default vectors i.e. roads; power lines. Streams; rivers; lakes are drawn from the USA NHD. 6. /images/notams/notams21/tabu0403.jpgMSFS Night3D V2 version offers lamps watts strengthened; newlydesigned lamps to further extend visibility of lights even at far awaydistance; optimization to avoid impact on frame rates. This Night3D package for MSFS introduces coverage for the whole ofCalifornia. What exactly does Night3D do to enhance the MSFS lights system?Night3D introduces new lamps into the existing ecosystem and isdesigned to work together with default lights. It is designed tocreate in the nocturnal MSFS world those little details the nightbring with its darkness. The lamps are strategically positioned to illuminate buildings withemissive 3D light and reflections taking advantage of new MSFSreflective surfaces. They are designed to be just a little bit biggerthan default lights to enhance their visibility and lightness. Night3D is a not invasive scenery; it is designed to avoid lightovercrowding. Night3D targets urban areas where there are buildings;lighting up buildings and roads only in residential areas for thewhole country or US state they cover. For example, it will not addlight on motorways or major roads as MSFS is already covered. Insteadit will light up the residential roads, building courtyards, alleyways, piers, depots, to mention just a few. Night3D is designed to make the most of MSFS new materials, featuring light reflections on ground, water, ice, windows, roofs orand any native MSFS material designed to reflect light. Night3D workshard at night and rests in the day when the lamps are still visiblebut in ‘Off’ mode. Night3D is strategically positioned to resemblelamp posts; we chose a shape and size to make sure it is visible foraircraft when flying over at night. 10. Review: TrueEarth US Northern California HD - X-PlaneBy Andrew ParishI must admit I have approached thisreview with some trepidation. Before taking it on, I knew little ornothing about Northern California other than where to find it on amap. Every day's a school day as they say - and I saw this a greatopportunity to learn something new. So... without further delay... Northern CaliforniaThe designation 'Northern California', whilst not formallyrecognised, popularly applies to the 48 northern-most counties of theUS state of California above the latitude 35° 47' 28" - a line whichforms the southern boundary of four of those counties. A quick checkof the Orbx scenery coverage map shows that the scenery packageclosely matches this definition.<?p> /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-03.jpgFigure 1 - Map depicting the area covered by the Northern California scenery package. The region has seen a varied history with its various parts havingbeen inhabited and colonised by Native Americans, European explorers,Spanish missionaries, Russian fur traders and Mexican settlers beforeAmerican trappers started to arrive in the 1830s. Fourteen short yearslater came the start of the California gold rush which saw over300,000 people flood to the area from across the globe and theexponential population growth ultimately gave rise to the admission ofCalifornia into the Union in 1850. As the gold rush petered out, theregion continued to expand dramatically in terms of both populationand a predominantly agricultural economy. The economy of present-day Northern California has grown from itsagricultural roots and whilst now heavily reliant on high technology,it is also known for clean power, biomedical industries, governmentand finance. It is the home of both Silicon Valley, and the statecapital of Sacramento. The region now boasts 40 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, three extended metropolitan areas, eleven major airports, tens ofnational parks, a complex road and transportation network, and eightmajor league professional sports teams. Geographically, it is home tomountain ranges and lakes, rugged coast lines and stunning beaches, and rich agricultural plains. Plenty of potential for eye-candy then, and lots of things to lookout for! Installation And ConfigurationInstallation, as with all Orbx products, is managed using the OrbxCentral tool - a free download from the Orbx web site. Once theproduct has been purchased online, it appears on the 'My Products' tabof Orbx Central and is available for download and installation. Theprocess for this can be as simple as clicking a button to start andaccepting the defaults. A scenery product of this complexity is going to take a while todownload and, depending on your internet connection, you're going tohave enough time to do anything from watching a movie to a whole boxset whilst the 52.3 GB download (43.4 GB for the SD version)completes. It's important before starting the process to ensure thatyou have the space available for the uncompressed files! Theuncompressed HD version of the scenery weighs in at a whopping195.2 GB; the SD version at a less disk-hungry 53.1 GB. The installer inserts the required entries into X-Plane's sceneryconfiguration file simplifying the process for those who are reticentto do it themselves. For me, the entries as they were created were putin the middle of the default list of X-Plane landmarks. This wouldhave worked with no issue, but I'm a stickler for tidy installs so ashort edit later they were where they needed to be. Configuration options are minimal and allow you to use defaultX-Plane road textures for the road network, or to use transparent oneswhich allow the photo realistic roads to show through. Your choicehere is a matter of personal preference - I selected the defaulttextures. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-10.jpgFigure 2 - The Northern California scenery package configuration dialog. For the purposes of the review, I disabled all other scenery andall add-ons. First ImpressionsWhere else to start, but on the ground at KSFO? A busyinternational airport close to the city of San Francisco. Rather thantaking a flight, which when you're keen to get a good look around inthe shortest time possible is unnecessarily slow, I elected to fire upthe free view camera and take it up to a reasonable altitude,and... Ah... Having chosen to fly with real-world weather I was presented withrather a grey vista, barely being able to make out the skyline of theFinancial District less than 20 km (12 miles) away. The San FranciscoBay area is of course renowned for its changeable weather and thickfog at times and X-Plane was doing a great job of replicatingthis! To gain a full appreciation of the scenery, it was going to benecessary to configure the weather manually and wind the visibility upto a level that would provide an optimal experience. Once I'd donethat... /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-08.jpgFigure 3 - First Impressions - Looking north from altitude above KSFO. Wow... Breath-taking. Even knowing it's a synthetic environment, and having seen otherOrbx TrueEarth products before, I still wasn't fully prepared for thefeast that was laid out before me. The carefully modelled nearby cityand its famous landmarks, the foreboding waters of the bay and thesuburbs that border it. Further afield, the expanse of the PacificOcean to the west and the Sierra Nevada to the east. Now, I couldn't wait to get into the air! A Flight Around Northern CaliforniaLooking at a map and reflecting on what I'd learnt about the regionI decided that the most effective way to see as much as possible wouldbe to fly a loop around it, making detours as required to spotspecific landmarks and features. The rough plan was to depart the SanFrancisco area to the south, taking in the bay and its environs, continuing south across acres of farmland before turning east towardsthe Sierra Nevada, then heading north towards the state border withOregon before heading west towards the Pacific coast and then headingback south to San Francisco. There is of course, plenty to recognise in the city of SanFrancisco itself. The famous Golden Gate bridge stands guard at theentrance to the bay; the island of Alcatraz with its prison; the SanFrancisco - Oakland Bay bridge providing a link across the bay,Telegraph Hill and the Financial district. Too many features to listindividually, but each of them faithfully reproduced. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-12.jpgFigure 4 - Characteristic hilled San Francisco streets seen from the bay with Alcatraz Island in the foreground. It's here that Orbx TrueEarth scenery comes into its own. Models ofrecognisable buildings and man-made objects in the area covered by thescenery are individually crafted, and the Northern California packagecontains over 1,000 of these, each placed in exactly the rightlocation on the underlying high-resolution photo-scenery. Less uniqueobjects are represented by generic models selected from a vast libraryand placed in precise locations. This is a compromise that balancesaccuracy with realism and, whilst a local will be able to spot thedifference easily, for the majority who are looking for a realisticexperience it delivers well. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-01.jpgFigure 5 - The San Francisco financial district taken from Telegraph Hill. A short flight around the city later, no doubt violating any numberof FAA regulations, not least of which being a flight under the GoldenGate bridge (and I defy anyone reading this to say hand on heart thatthey've never flown under a bridge in a flight sim), it was time toexplore further afield. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-11.jpgFigure 6 - From the Golden Gate Bridge looking back towards the city of San Francisco and the Bay Heading south across from the bay I found myself, not by accidentit must be said, flying over Silicon Valley - home to headquarters ofthe world's most recognisable high-technology companies. Pre-armedwith a few photos and the locations of buildings I'd never seen, itwas simple enough to spot them in the mosaic of streets passingbelow. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-13.jpgFigure 7 - Silicon Valley, and Apple's Campus in Cupertino As the sprawling metropolis finally ended, the enormity of the taskI'd set myself hit home but undaunted, admittedly with autopilotengaged, I pressed on. With the San Francisco sectional chart courtesyof skyvector.com displayed on a second monitor, navigation was, asmight be expected, a breeze with mountains, rivers and forests, roads, powerlines, cities and towns all exactly where they were supposed tobe. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-05.jpgFigure 8 - Approaching Fresno from the west; Sierra Nevada in the background. My ultimate aim by flying to the southwest of the region was toexplore the southern extent of the scenery package before heading backnorth, over the Sierra Nevada and taking in some of the sights ofthe Yosemite National Park, home to the iconic Yosemite valley and itsEl Capitan and Half Dome mountains. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-09.jpgFigure 9 - The Yosemite Valley - El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View Heading north from Yosemite, the imposing heights of the SierraNevada slowly temper and eventually give way to the Cascade Rangewhich extends from Lassen Peak up through Oregon and Washington toBritish Columbia in Canada. The Cascade Range's highest point is MountRainier located in Washington state, but Northern California is hometo the range's second highest peak, and potentially active volcano,Mount Shasta whose snow-capped form stands majestically towards thenorthern limits of the state. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-14.jpgFigure 10 - Approaching Mount Shasta from the west. Continuing to the west for a short while across the Klamathmountains brought me to the Pacific Ocean, and the rugged coastlinesand stunning beaches that I'd set out to see. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-04.jpgFigure 11 - Rugged coastlines and stunning beaches. No visit to Northern California would be complete without anoverflight of the state capital, Sacramento, and cutting inland acrossfrom the coast, the mountainous coast line and hills behind it giveway to a very different ridged landscape - a stark reminder that thewhole region sits on a series of fault lines and is prone todevastating earthquakes. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-06.jpgFigure 12 - Heading inland towards Sacramento - mountains, ridges and farmland. The city of Sacramento itself, like all other cities in thepackage, is home to accurate representations of its major buildingsand other landmarks making it instantly recognisable from the air. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-07.jpgFigure 13 - Downtown Sacramento - Tower Bridge in the lower left, the Golden 1 Center in the center, and the State Capitol building at the top right Finally, heading back into San Francisco from Sacramento, Iencountered the last thing on my 'I Spy' list of things to see. Asource of clean energy, the Rio Vista wind farm. A site with hundredsof windmills, all aligned perfectly with the photo scenery on whichthey were placed and pleasingly, Orbx has managed to avoid a scenariowhere the rotation of all the windmills is synchronised. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-02.jpgFigure 14 - The Rio Vista wind farm. It is here though that I found my first and only problem with thepackage. Having carefully crafted the weather for the flight, I wasintimately aware of the wind settings that I'd configured. Thewindmills were facing in the wrong direction - downwind instead ofupwind. Tweaking the wind direction showed this to always the case. Ishould admit here that I have a PPL and one of the things I was alwaystaught to be on the lookout for is cues on the ground that tell mewhich way the wind is blowing. It is testament to the quality of thescenery that I found myself doing what I'd be doing in a real aircraftand when all is said and done, this is a minor issue. In SummaryThere's something in Orbx's Northern California scenery foreveryone and it's difficult to do it justice in a limited wordcount! Pilots who love to fly low and slow, navigating by dead-reckoning,will relish the ease with which they will be able to do so. Those whojust love flying around looking out of the window will be entertainedfor ages. Whether you live in the region, or you've always wanted tovisit it but never been able to, you're going to be impressed. If yourflying is more aligned to commercial operations and you ply the WestCoast of the US, there's still plenty here for you - especially if youalso consider the complementary packages in the Orbx TrueEarthrange. What struck me most as I was flying around Northern Californiathough is the diversity that exists within the region which has beenpainstakingly replicated. The route I took passed no more than a fewthousand feet over red, scorched earth, arable agricultural land andrugged forest covered mountains. Along the route were towns, citiesand metropolises. The specific features within the region I set out tosee were all there, easy to find and everything was renderedrealistically and in remarkable definition. It's been an education. I'm off to see more! Andrew Parish Purchase Orbx TrueEarth US Northern California
