  1. decided to try something newew, and bought myself the PMDG DC-6 for P3Dv4
  2. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg1123.jpgIt isn't very often you will publish something that we know inadvance is going to break functionality on your machine, but this isone of those times. In the coming days we are going to publish an update to the PMDGOperations Center that is going to change how the OC interacts withthe PMDG DC-6 for MSFS. This NOTAM is designed to get some informationin front of PMDG DC-6 for MSFS customers so that you can be adequatelyprepared for the change. The good news is that PMDG DC-6 for MSFS users who come to us fromMS Marketplace will finally have access to all the rest of the liverylibrary! Who does this apply to? PMDG DC-6 for MSFS Users Only. This notam does not apply to any other product. SummaryThe current build of OC2 is incompatible with the DC-6 delivered through Microsoft Marketplace. This update will allow OC2 to handle the DC-6 from pmdg.com and MS Marketplace identically. If you already have the DC-6 from pmdg.com and have installed some liveries, there is a minor housekeeping task required prior to updating. If you already have the DC-6 from MS Marketplace installed, and you have installed some liveries manually, there is a minor housekeeping task required prior to updating.OverviewOne of the "unknowns" we have been waiting to unwrap involves howto gracefully manage livery installation for both pmdg.com and MSMarketplace users. MSFS does a really good job of unifying thecustomer experience so that no matter what platform you are on, youget a single, common experience- so we had high hopes that this wouldbe an easy task from a development standpoint. We couldn't have been more wrong. There is a long and windy road here that involves encryption, protected locations, multiple work directories and the like- but noneof that is very interesting so I will skip over it here. The endresult is this: Effective with this update, the following changes will take place: OC2 has a single, unified operating method for all PMDG DC-6 for MSFS users (except Xbox users, obviously.)OC2 will no longer install liveries within the aircraft proper. All liveries are now standardized to be installed in their own directory.OC2 can now deal with the (absurdly) long path names (> 260 characters!) that sometimes pop up in MSFS.This update will roll out next week. You will see an advisory about it inside the Operations Center when you run it. What you need to do: Now, the important bit here is the second bullet point. Since weare changing the location where we store liveries, this means you willwant to uninstall ALL liveries that you added to the PMDG DC-6 forMSFS prior to installing this upgrade. You can do this right away, orwait until the OC2 alerts you that the new update is ready- either wayis fine. But- **BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE OC2 UPDATE** go into the OC2you currently have installed and uninstall the liveries you added tothe PMDG DC-6 for MSFS. Then run the update. And reinstall your liveries. It is that simple. If you are not a PMDG DC-6 for MSFS user, this update will fold inwithout any action required on your part. We will publish a notam in the OC2 that points to this instructionset... and if you see other folks out there wondering what it means orhow to deal with it- please do point them here so we can help them. Itisn't a difficult task, but getting the word out to everyone is goingto be important to users who perhaps aren't as familiar with the PMDGOperations Center. Thanks everyone. Let us know if you have any questions, or if youhit any knee-knockers. Source

  4. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0727.jpgA few moments ago we updated the PMDG DC-6 for MSFS to build2.00.0037. You can get this update via the PMDG Operations Centerupdate page. The update is VERY small and just cleans up a few things thatbecame necessary after the Microsoft SU5 update to MSFS. These itemsinclude: Released 2021-08-310010150: [sounds] Seat belt / smoking chimes sound if airplane power is turned off (hvanrensburg)0010149: [systems Behavior/Functionality] Pilot avatars are missing (cbpowell)0010148: [External Model - Lighting] Prop side reflection in direct sunlight is suboptimal (jbrown)This update was ready a few weeks ago, but we were chasing our tailon a few other items that we have determined will require correctionswithin the MSFS platform itself and thus there was no reason to keepholding these three items. This bring the DC-6 up to a state where wefeel it is ready to go into the MSFS Marketplace and we will (wehope?) hand that off to Microsoft - so good news for folks that havebeen waiting for that avenue to open. In my last update, I mentioned that we were caught out byMicrosoft's major platform update in late July. We received ourtesting access for the platform change only about 5 days prior to itreleasing to the market, so we scrambled a bit to get the DC-6 to playwell with the new platform update and this knocked us off our game abit. This update made some significant changes to the core of theplatform that required a bit of re-work on the DC-6, and that pulledquite a bit of our development time away from the 737, thus slowingthat project down unexpectedly. While we have moved resources back tothe 737 where we want them, I am still finding that progress is goinga bit slower than we would like because the changes brought to thecore platform have been a bit challenged, it would seem. We have hadto feel our way through a few things trying to determine "is thissomething we need to change permanently in the 737? Or is thissomething we should ignore for now because it is a bug in the platformthat Asobo will fix later?" Normally we would simply bounce the questions off Asobo, and wehave continued to do so, but this is the holiday season and that hasslowed the reply loop. When the sun comes up in the morning, it willbe 01SEP and we are expecting that things will speed up readily andthat should get us back to moving at normal pace here shortly. The 737 looks absolutely sumptuous in MSFS and I am *pretty* surewe will start showing her to you this month... On the 747 side of the house, the new LNAV module is in testing andis about to get another update for our beta testers later thisweek. WIth any major logical update of this size, there are alwayscorner cases that need to be adjusted, but so far the feedback is thatthe update is a significant improvement over the legacy LNAVmodel. Once it completes testing we will roll it out to you via amicro update. The timeline for that is a bit fuzzy, but I'll keep youposted! Okay, that is all for tonight... we hope you are all enjoying yourend of summer and remaining healthy! Source
  5. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0727.jpgFor the last couple of weeks we have been focused mostly onfinding/fixing problems that have occurred as a result of thecontinued growth in the MSFS platform, and today we have just pushedanother update aimed at bringing some closure to a few such itemswhile cleaning up a couple of others. You can grab the update to2.00.0036 via the PMDG Operations Center, as normal effective just afew moments ago. Changes for this build are included here: PMDG DC-6 for MSFS v2.00.0036 Released 2021-08-050010128: [External Model - Geometry] Pink door frames on DC6A after MSFS SU (jbrown)0010127: [External Model - Lighting] Landing Light and Wing lights still have light texture when OFF. For us, theexperience has been a bit like sitting cross-legged on a yoga ball ina dark room on a ship navigating rough waters while balancing a trayof flaming champagne glasses with an eye patch on one eye... Theremight also be someone throwing MSFS branded tennis balls in thiscircus act, at times it is hard to tell, but I think you get thepoint. This is a strange time in history generally, with much of the worldhoping to get in some normal summer vacation after 18 months ofcaptivity, and it is also an odd time for simmers since a major updatefor everyone's favorite platform dropped while many involved in theplatform and the dev community generally are in some stage of leavingfor/enjoying/returning from the aforementionedmuch-needed-vacation. This is having a disruptive impact oncommunication and making it a bit harder for all of us to determinewhich things popping up are "a PMDG problem to solve" or "aplatform-update-related hiccup that Asobo will fix later." We continue to log/track/research things just as quickly as we can,and as we adapt the product to the changes in the platform we willcontinue to hand you updates to keep you moving with the latest sothat your enjoyment of the DC-6 is not interrupted. In other PMDG news: Right now about 75% of the development team's workflow is dedicatedto getting the 737 into testing. We had originally planned to put the737 into the hands of our beta team around 01AUG, but that timelinewent up in flames when we learned through a blog-post that Microsofthad their Performance Plus update coming for the base platform. Thenew update sort of threw things into chaos around here and we haven'tmade the sort of progress we had anticipated in July, but we arebeginning to see forward progress on 737 once again and I am justitching to begin the preview process. Not much longer for thatnow! Also in the background, we are putting an update for the PMDG 747Queen of the Skies product line together for our beta teams. Thisupdate includes our new LNAV and flight director models and will bethe first major overhaul to this area of our technology in nearly 12years, which is exciting. The plan is that once our beta team signsoff on it, we will push that to you and then begin rolling it into the777 and 737 airplanes, both of which should go pretty quickly once thebase tech is signed off in the 747. Once LNAV and the flight directorare updated, we will make another pass-through to update the navdataprocess for all three product lines, which is thethird-leg-of-the-stool for this core technology update cycle. And of course, the great news is that all of this will come to youat no cost with an update. Happy Birthday PMDG!07AUG will mark PMDG's 24th birthday! To celebrate, we are going togive you one week of 24% off all PMDG products for Prepar3D, beginningat 0001Z 07AUG21! If you have been on the fence about that new777-200ER, now is your chance to save big, and we won't even make youeat an extra helping of cake in order to qualify! It is astounding to all of us that PMDG continues to grow andthrive after all of these years, and on behalf of all of us on thePMDG team, thank you. We couldn't have gotten here without you and wevery much appreciate your business! (Now have some cake!) Source
  6. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0727.jpgA few moments ago we released another update for the PMDG DC-6 forMSFS via the Operations Center. This update is primarily targeted at visual aspects of the PMDGDC-6 that were incorrectly exported in build 33, but also includes acouple of minor fixes in our ongoing maintenance of the product andcurative efforts for some of the things that changed with the largeMSFS platform update released this week. I mentioned in in my post earlier this week that PMDG was admittedto the test program for the new MSFS update with only a few days toprep the DC-6 for the transition. We missed some key documentationchanges related to Asobo's SDK, and this caused us to accidentallyexport the DC-6 cockpit at lower resolution than normal, which createdsome really bad visuals in the VC. This update cures that problem byputting the cockpit back to the correct resolution. We have implemented something that we *think* fixes the problem ofthe randomly spinning volume knob on the Asobo GPS used in theDC-6. We aren't sure why that knob is an issue, but we were able toimplement a way to make it stop spinning, which then unsticks the AFEwho was getting hung up by that particular artifact. Also included in this update: Level-of-detail (LOD) fixes for the exteriorOverhauled the cabin heating/cooling system for correctnessCabin pressurization fixesEngine health display fixesWe have other items we are still working on, but thought it wasimportant to get you this update in time for your weekend flying! One last item I want to touch on: I mentioned in my previous postthat we had reported back to Asobo that in their last build prior toplatform update, we saw a significant drop in performance in theDC-6. Continuing discussion with Asobo has shown that we weren't notimagining this change- there was indeed a change made to the releaseversion of the MSFS platform that took performance away from theDC-6. Asobo indicated that they turned off a particular rendering channelbecause it needed more time in development to solve a few problems, and it just happens that the DC-6 benefits significantly from thisparticular channel- hence we saw the loss of performance in therelease build. The good news, however, is that they were able toresolve the issues they were experiencing, and this channel isexpected to be reactivated in a subsequent update from Asobo- and thenyou will see a pretty significant boost in performance with theDC-6. So, good things still to come! Source
  7. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0727.jpgAs mentioned in last night's NOTAM, we have released an update forthe PMDG DC-6 for Microsoft Flight Simulator tonight. The update isavailable to you now via the PMDG Operations Center. To obtain the update, simply run the PMDG Operations Center and goto the aircraft updates page. You will find it prompts you with anavailable update to 2.00.0033. Easy! This update was driven primarily by the need to update theproduct in order to ensure compatibility with MSFS after theplatform's significant update that was released on 27JUL21 byAsobo/Microsoft. The platform changes driven by its continueddevelopment caused many breaking changes that required modificationsto the PMDG DC-6 in order to ensure compatibility and smooth operationof the airplane within the sim environment. Listing these breaking changes is a bit beyond the scope of what Iwant to do here as they are mostly irrelevant to all of us who areend-users. What matters is that changes were made to continuecompatibility. That being said, we have the development team standing by to seehow the DC-6 does in the new environment because we are nearly certainthat some issues will have slipped by our notice, as we were unable togive the DC-6 a proper test cycle in the new MSFS environment. Weapologize for this, as normally we like to thoroughly test releasesbefore handing them to you, but we were only invited into the MSFStesting environment for the new update when it was within days ofrelease to you. Thus our effort to catalog/research/fix problems ranessentially from Wednesday-to-Friday of last week with us handing alaundry list of problems off to our friends at Asobo beginning onFriday morning. Amazingly in spite of our late addition to their test process,Asobo took our reports and was able to work in fixes for the issues wereported back to them on Friday morning. The spirit of cooperationfrom Asobo to act on these reports so very late in their developmentcycle is worth calling out with an ovation. We tend not to communicatewith them often, but it speaks volumes of them that they areuniversally responsive and helpful, so I want to thank them for thatpublicly. In the midst of all these changes, we also wrapped in a few other changes from our collection of service reports. Exciting times ahead, everyone! Thank you so much for yourcontinued support of our products; we do very much appreciate it. Source
  8. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0727.jpgLater today, it is expected that Microsoft is going to drop a majorproduct update for their flagship Microsoft Flight Simulator productline. Many of you are already well aware that they have beenadvertising this update for its performance improvements and becauseit will be made available to XBox users via Microsoft GamePass. This NOTAM is to let you know that this update for MSFS contains avast number of breaking changes that break the compatibility with allprevious builds of the PMDG DC-6 up to and including the current, stable 2.00.0032 build that all of you are currently enjoying. During the day on Tuesday, 27JUL21, we will roll out an update forthe DC-6 that will bring the product up to compliance with changes inMicrosoft Flight Simulator and this will allow you to continue usingthe product with little-to-no disruption. We will have a longer update to discuss the howzits and whatsits ofthis update later in the day on Tuesday, but we want you all to knowthat the update is prepped and ready and will go live once we know forcertain that the Microsoft Flight Simulator Performance Plus update issafely in wide distribution. This is really a first for us, in that we are essentially updatingour product for you in real time with a major platform change. We havenever done this before, so please do understand that we are going tohesitate a beat or two to ensure the MSFS release is really and trulyrolling out globally before we turn our update on, as this update willbreak compatibility between the PMDG DC-6 and the older version ofMSFS so we want to be certain we are in phase with the platform. We appreciate your patience during that brief lag-time-overlap, butkeep an eye here and we will let you know where-and-how the moment theupdate is available for you. Thank you all-we will talk with you again a bit later on Tuesday! Source

  15. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0616/pmdg0616.jpgWe are happy to announce that our first product for MicrosoftFlight Simulator has completed development and is now pending forrelease. The PMDG Douglas DC-6 for Microsoft Flight Simulator represents thefirst of a number of products that PMDG has planned for MicrosoftFlight Simulator, and marries our penchant for creating "study level"simulations with Microsoft's magnificent new, high technology flightsimulation engine. Never before have we had the ability to model anairplane with such detail, and we are very excited to bring thisproduct to market this week. Throwing superlatives around is an easy thing to do when you areworking with a new generation of simulation platform that is asvisually stunning as thew new Microsoft Flight Simulator. We tend toshy away from such behavior when showing a soon-to-be releasedproduct, but in this case it is hard to avoid. MSFS is a modern enginethat does a magnificent job of capturing the beauty of the DC-6,allowing us to turn out a highly detailed, robust simulation of one ofthe world's great, classic airliners. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0616/pmdg-dc6-1.jpgThe PMDG Douglas DC-6 for Microsoft Flight Simulator is a ground upbuild that was designed from the beginning to capitalize on theadvanced features of MSFS. 17. Around Thailand in a DC-6 -- Flying Cargo in Southeast Asia By Joe Thompson (3 November 2005) Have you ever been someplace, heard a specific sound or smelled an odor that triggered a past memory? Most of us have. And for some old aviators MSFS allows them to selectively "regress" to a by-gone era and relive events from their aviation past. Where does the reality stop and virtual begin? Or does it? You be the judge. Being the CEO of your own virtual airline, Mercator (http://www.flymercator.com), has distinct advantages. For one, while my line pilots are out flying scheduled revenue runs, I normally fly Non Revenue Proving Flights (NRPF) to develop new lines for our flight schedule which already contains over 1,300 airport destinations in over 156 countries and territories. I also never pass up an opportunity to fly a bird that I have little or no experience in. Thus is the case when I recently received a call from an old friend who asked if I would be interested in checking out in our DC-6B. So I was off to Thailand. After a fitful nights sleep in my hotel room near Don Muang Airport, Bangkok I arose at 0300L to fly a cargo run in one of my company DC-6B's from Bangkok (VTBD/BKK) to Mae Hongson (VTCH/HGN), then over to Ubon Ratchathani (VTUU/UBP) and eventually recovering back at BKK. In the left seat would be Pete Stockermann with over 15,000 hours. The FE/Loadmaster would be Ernie Hilton with over 11,000 hours and I was going to be in the right seat. Both Pete and Ernie are licensed A&P's along with holding ATP certificates. With that kind of experience riding with me I was pretty sure I would not get myself into too much trouble. After arrival at the airport we were briefed by dispatch and signed for the flight. Engine start was scheduled for a 0515. With our over-stuffed "brain bags" containing aircraft operating manuals, company SOP's, NAV data, and miscellaneous gear in hand we proceeded out to the ramp. We were flying N6MC, parked at stand 109 at the Thai cargo terminal. The sight that greeted us wasn't good. Several mechanics were huddled under the un-cowled #3 engine and it was then we learned that after doing some night maintenance they had decided to test run it before our arrival. Well you guessed it! Number 3 would not start and now the hunt was on for the gremlin. One thing I've learned over the years in aviation -- don't expect an accurate answer to the question "When do you think it will be fixed?" But we asked anyhow and we got "In about an hour give or take", so we mounted the stairs and settled in and waited and sure enough, an hour later it was fixed -- a bad wiring harness on the second bank of cylinders of the P&W R-2800 Double Wasp engine. Ernie completed his walk around while Pete and I prepped the cockpit. The front office of DC-6 can be an intimidating place with plenty of switches, gauges, throttles & prop levers and the like to panic the novice. It was daunting but I managed to get everything in the right position -- with a little help from Pete. Finally Ernie climbed aboard and we were ready for engine start. Staring the engines on a DC-6 is an exercise in manual dexterity and team work. Ernie's right hand goes to the overhead panel and flips switches. I hang my head out the side window and signal that the prop is clear. Ernie calls "Three selected, three boosted, three clear, three turning". I count the blade rotations and indicate when 12 rotations are complete. Pete, in the left seat then calls "Switches On" and Ernie rotates the #3 magneto switch and the huge P&W Dual Wasp comes to life...with a lot of smoke to announce their new status. This routine is repeated until we have four good engines on line. We then do the run-up and after completing the required checks I throttle back and Pete calls Ground Control and we finally move off our spot. Engine start...finally. Don Muang Airport, Bangkok. We are cleared for immediate takeoff so I maneuver us onto the centerline of Runway 21R, apply the brakes, and advance the throttles to give us 30" of manifold pressure (MAP). Then brakes off and I push a fistful of throttles forward until we have 59" MAP and the WASP engines thunder into a crescendo of noise as we accelerate down the runway. Pete calls "V1" then "Rotate" and I apply backpressure. "Positive Rate - Gear Up" and we climb out. Flaps are retracted on schedule and passing 500' AGL I adjust the power & props to 38" MAP & 2300 RPM and we begin a slow -- 500 fpm -- climb to our cruise altitude. After several heading changes we eventual intercept our outbound airway (A464) 33 DME north of BKK and headed northwestward. This leg is 370 NM and we are expecting 1+50 ETE. Weather is forecast to be good, with some building clouds and low level turbulence as we enter the mountains in the vicinity of Chiang Mai. With the excitement of the takeoff behind us, we settle into the enroute routine of panel checks, 'Howgoesit' calculations and idle chit-chat, broken with an occasional radio transmission. At cruise altitude I make another prop/throttle adjustment to give us 35" MAP and 2300 RPM. Ernie closes the cowl flaps which had been partially open during our climb and the air speed needle slowly climbs to 205 and settles down. The engines assume a low, throaty rumble as we bore holes thru the cool morning air. Ah...life is good! As we approach Chiang Mai the clouds begin to thicken and the increasing mountain foothills start to play hide and seek with us thru holes in the cloud deck below. Over Chiang Mai I disengage the Heading Hold and roll us into a gentle turn to the left, and once established on Airway W9 re-engage the Heading Hold. Only 68 NM to go before Mae Hongson (VTCH/HGN). The tempo starts to pick up as we re-compute our Top of Descent (TOD) point and talk about the upcoming approach. Mae Hongson sits in a narrow valley, surrounded by steeply rising terrain in all quadrants. Runway 11-29 is 6561' LOA. Due to the steep terrain on the west end of the field you land on runway 11 and takeoffs on runway 29. The approach system is a DVOR DME utilizing an IGS track. I ask Ernie what exactly was the difference between a standard VOR and a Doppler VOR and he starts a mantra chant about "...the carrier is amplitude modulated by the reference signal and frequency modulated by the variable signal and..." Well the short answer is it's more accurate which is the reason they installed one here for this dangerous approach. Pete reminds me, as we brief the approach, that under no circumstances should I descend below 7,000' until inside 10 DME from the DVOR. There is a ridgeline that runs north-south which has speared more than one aircraft in the past. We pass the ridgeline at 7,000' and continued our descent to 5000' . The approach plate calls for a 4 DME arc flown to the north to intercept the Final Approach Fix (FAF) 3 DME and 3,300' to the west of the DVOR. Then a 105 degree track inbound to the runway. So around we flew as I slowed to 150 KTS IAS, Ernie opened the cowl flaps for some cooling, and we hung out the flaps, dropped the gear and I powered up to hold approach speed. Mae Tower cleared us to land and as we passed 1000' AGL Pete armed the Martin bar on the pedestal. This is what you'll actually see -- hopefully -- when you approach Mae Hongson (VTCH/HGN) Here's my view as we begin our final approach. Little room for error here! Well I got us down, we powered up to brake and then turned around at the runway end and taxied back to our assigned spot on the ramp. Mae Hongson is a small provincial town in the far, northwestern reaches of Thailand, tucked in a fold of the border with Myanmar (Burma). You may have seen a National Geographic magazine or TV show in the past that highlighted tribal women who had elongated necks encircled with numerous brass rings. Well Mae Hongson is where they live. Its remoteness has kept most tourist traffic to a reasonable level but we had work to do...well at least Ernie did. He was also our loadmaster so while Pete and I headed into the terminal to check the paperwork for the next leg Ernie got to work with the loaders ensuring that the right stuff got offloaded and that no one punched a hole in our fuselage in the process. Mae Hongson Ramp Our next leg from HGN to Ubon Ratchathani, also known as Ubon (VTUU/UBP), looked good. No significant weather enroute but there was some "garbled traffic" concerning a possible delay on the ramp at Ubon due to some cargo delivery glitch. We tried to get it clarified but the responses only got more confusing so we decided to drop the subject and hope for the best we got there. . Within the hour Ernie reported that we were ready to go so we all mounted our trusty stead and strapped in. Checks complete, four good engines turning we taxied into position and held. A last quick check, power up and off we went. Getting out of Mae Hongson is just as tricky as getting in and on several occasions I caught the Radar Altimeter jump down then back up as we passed a hill on our way around the 4 DME DVOR arc in a reversal of our arrival. Eventually we cleared the eastern ridgeline and settled into our climb. Our route was back up W9 to Chiang Mai then W16 to Chum Phae where we would pick up G473 to Ubon. The distance was 470 NM and we planned on 2+15 ETE. Again we settled into the monotony of the enroute phase swapping flying yarns about our previous exploits in the wild, blue yonder to make the time pass quicker. Arrival in Ubon Ratchathani proved uneventful. We came in from the NW, entered the pattern on a wide, looping downwind for runway 23, configured the bird for our approach and was cleared to land. Turning final for Ubon RTAFB runway 23 with the Mun River visible off our nose. We were scheduled to on/off load materiel on the military side of the field. In fact Ubon is actually a Royal Thai Air Force Base (RTAFB) that is shared with the civilians. The only commercial traffic is Thai Airlines and Air Asia. Unfortunately after we parked we learned that the garbled message up in Mae about a possible cargo delivery delay was reality. Explanations differed but the gist was we were looking at several hours on the ramp and not departing until sunset. Engine start at Ubon as the sun sets. Well the pay's the same and we had our own tour guide in the form of Ernie Hilton. Ernie was an old Ubon hand from the Viet Nam era. Back in the late 60's he was attached to the 16th Special Operations Squadron (SOS) at Ubon and flew as a CP aboard an NC-123K "Project Black Spot" aircraft. Ernie has plenty of tales to stand neck hairs at attention and he told us a few as we tried to kill the time. We also borrowed a vehicle and Ernie gave us the grand tour of the base and retold war stories -- stories that had been told thousands of times but never lose their attraction. And as the sun began to dip below the horizon we were finally cleared for departure and not a moment too soon. So with the ship buttoned up we fired up the engines and headed out to the active. Runway 21L Bangkok welcomes us as we finish a long day. The routine of lineup, power application, climb out and finally settling on our cruise altitude seemed to slide by in a continuous blur and all the while the huge R-2800 P&W's hanging off the wings continued to drone on in their soporific tone. But soon we were at our TOD point and we started our gradual descent to terra firma. Bangkok ATIS was calling for reduced VIS in rain showers and as we got closer and lower the visibility did turn south on us but the rain was spotty. And as all good aviation stories should end we picked up the PAPI several miles out and with one final gentle kiss of the tires on the tarmac we were back in Bangkok. We taxied in and parked and after completing the shutdown I released my harness and pushed my seat back and just sat and enjoyed the silence. I thought about Robert Stack and John Wayne piloting their DC-6 from Hawaii to SFO in Ernest Gann's magnificent "The High and the Mighty". And what I had just accomplished felt good. As Pete slid out of his seat he tapped my shoulder and said "Good job Boss, let's do it again some time." Does it get any better than this? I think not. Credits The talent and efforts of designers like those listed below have enriched my MSFS experiences far beyond anything imaginable. When they can produce an aircraft or a piece of scenery that triggers sights, sounds and smells from past experiences then their talents are truly remarkable.
