  1. WW2 Airfield Complex With 15 Airstrips! Dobodura, Papua New Guinea By Frank’s MS Flight Sim Come join me in the beautiful MSFS 2020 Spitfire to look at the WW2 Dobodura Airfield Complex, with its 15 airstrips, built by the Americans & Australians in Papua New Guinea during WW2. Learn how the airfield complex fitted in to the history of the war when Japan was at the peak of its expansion. Hope you enjoy. Cheers. Frank’s MS Flight Sim https://www.youtube.com/@FranksMSFlightSimulator About Frank's MS Flight Sim New channel begun in 2021. Visit notable airfields and areas in Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS). Themes so far include: WW2; Bush/Mt./Water/Outback strips; “Golden Oldie” strips; heritage/vintage strips; and aircraft accident investigations. More different themes to come. Expect a new video roughly each week. Provides brief, interesting information, often with history, geography, maps, pictures etc, and great places to fly in MSFS. Focus is on interesting content rather than production values.
  2. /images/notams/notams22/auth1012.jpgThe Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) has the responsibilitywithin the Royal Air Force of maintaining in airworthy condition someof the United Kingdom’s most precious aircraft. P7350 is one suchexample, described by Squadron Leader Andy Millikin in the 2018 filmSpitfire as “in my opinion the most precious flying machine on theplanet bar … the Apollo 11 command capsuleâ€. In the photo shown hereyou can see it alongside the BBMF’s latest cockpit, a Spitfire MkIX VRsimulator being tested by Cpl Rich “Boycey†Boyce. AuthentiKit is both proud and honoured to have supported the RAFover the past few months, working with Boycey and his team to createthis simulator using AuthentiKit controls. On one of my visits to RAFConingsby, home of the BBMF, I took along Steve Walton known to manyas VR Flight Sim Guy and you can see him here in the Spitfiresimulator. A Pilot Training Aide And Public DemonstratorThe aim of the simulator is twofold. Initially it was to offer thepublic a chance to experience flying a Spitfire at BBMF airshowshowever once it started to take shape in the BBMF hangar it soonattracted the attention of the pilots of the RAF display team. Thisled to a secondary role as a training aide both for Spitfirefamiliarisation for new Spitfire pilots and potentially for practicingairshow flyovers. This was a very exciting development as it created an additionalimperative to ensure that everything was in exactly the right placeand felt just right. Fortunately that has always been an importantaspect of AuthentiKit and so the main focus of effort was thenadapting the controls to fit the cockpit shell the BBMF engineers werestarting with. We also added a few touches like the instrument panelthat, whilst not of immense value in VR, added hugely to the sense ofclimbing inside a real Spitfire. BBMF Members' Day LaunchThe simulator was unveiled to the public at the BBMF Members’ Daywhere Spitfire experiences were offered free to attendees. Needless tosay it was extremely popular and a queue quickly formed keeping Boyceyand his team flat out through the day. We also set up an AuthentiKitdisplay alongside and I very much appreciated the help of Ian Colman(who created the AuthentiKit Tuning App) as well as YouTubeinfluencers, Mark Duff (SimHanger) and Steve Walton in setting thingsup and sharing the AuthentiKit story with visitors. Also thanks toAllan Hall (holding the camera!) who initially created SimKitSupplies,a business offering kits for self assembly of AuthentiKitcontrols. Source
  3. Supermarine Spitfire Mk1APublisher: Aeroplane HeavenReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $32.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-4.jpgThe Supermarine Spitfire is regardedby many as the aircraft that won the war over the skies of Britainduring WWII. Known for its agile and nimble flying, it closely foughtagainst the Messerschmitt Bf 109 throughout the Battle of Britain andinto France. Aeroplane Heaven has been developing flight simulator add-ons since2001, focusing mainly on WWII military prop aircraft, as well as somegeneral aviation and jetliners. They are well-known for theirhigh-quality models, and this is something they aim to bring toMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2020. The Supermarine Spitfire is one of Aeroplane Heaven's newestreleases for MSFS, and in this review I will be giving my thoughts onhow this iconic aircraft performs. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-2.jpgAircraft SpecificationCrew: 1Length: 29ft 11in (9.12m)Wingspan: 36ft 10in (11.23m)Height: 11ft 5in (3.48m)Empty Weight: 5,065lbs (2,297kg)Maximum Takeoff Weight: 6,700lbs (3,039kg)Powerplant: Rolls-Royce Merlin 45Aircraft PerformanceRange: 479mi (771km, 416nmi) Rate of Climb: 2,600ft/min (13m/s)Service Ceiling: 36,500ft (11,100m)Max Cruising Speed: 320kts (600km/h, 370mph) /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-1.jpgDownload And InstallInstallation from the FlightSim.Com Store is a simpleprocess. After purchase, you download a zip file that contains theaircraft file. Drag and drop this into your Microsoft Flight Simulator'Community' folder and the aircraft is then ready to fly! Included is a 13-page document that goes into detail about thehistory of the Spitfire and some of the missions it flew, as well as adetailed layout of the cockpit and a checklist for you tofollow. There is also a 63-page document including real-worldschematics of the aircraft as well as scans of the original pilotnotes for aerobatics. This is a welcomed addition to this add-on,giving you a lot of insight into the real-world operation of theSpitfire, with detail on its optimum flying state which you can applyto the simulator. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-6.jpgExterior ModelThe model of the Spitfire is incredibly detailed and looks veryclose to that of the real thing. The body of each aircraft also includes some weathering; scuffs andmarks where the airframe has been damaged or hasty repairs have beenmade. The layout on the wings where pilots and crew climb to accessthe cockpit has also been worn down, with paint being replaced withbare metal and dirt. Animations on the aircraft are also really well-defined, with flapsand ailerons moving at a slightly different pace, as well as the delaybetween the two landing gear as they drop and raise. A lot of carehas been put into every detail of this aircraft, making it a joy tolook at when flying. Aeroplane Heaven have also made use of some light crash modellingtoo. If you tip the nose over on landing or forget to lower your gear(as was the case with a few early Spitfire pilots) the propellers willbend out of shape and your engine output will completely drop. It's asmall extra detail, but one that adds increased realism to theaircraft. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-7.jpgThe Spitfire comes with nine different liveries, seven from WWII, amodern restored livery and an unpainted alloy shell. These are alldone to a very high resolution and include a lot of detail across thebody, with panel gaps, rivets, and decals being visible, along withclearly defined text. Cockpit And FunctionalityThe cockpit of the Spitfire was a cramped ordeal, with aircraftsystems and gauges surrounding you. Aeroplane Heaven has accurately recreated the inside of thecockpit, with all switches and levers functional to that of the realthing. The control layout is relatively simple, with your main gaugesin front of you, engine systems to your left and hydraulic managementto your right. You can change the weapon armament between 'Safe' and'Fire', however as far as I can tell, the machine gun is non-functioning. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-3.jpgDuring steep dives in the Spitfire, I have noticed that the gaugestend to lock up. This would be accurate with any light prop aircraft,as a high number of G's will cause the gauges to stick at the lastposition they were at. When on the ground too, the engine vibrationswill also cause the gauges and dials to also shimmer a little. One thing you note with the Spitfire is the speedometer is measuredin Miles Per Hour, as opposed to Knots. This presumably comes before atime when speed units were standardised in aviation, and with theBrits using MPH to measure speed, this became a standard in theSpitfire. Altitude and vertical speed are still measured in feet. Textures are once again done to a very high level of quality andlook great when viewing the gauges up close. The Spitfire was built inbulk and went through some of the toughest flying in its era, so it'swonderful to see that the cockpit was full of minor weatheringimperfections. Some of these included scratches along gauge panels orflakes of paint missing on the levers. This helps in bringing theaircraft to life with minor details that add life to the cockpit. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-5.jpgYou also find smaller details too, such as a working harnessrelease switch that changes the state of your aircraft from the air tothe ground, as well as a detailed cockpit hatch that lets you operateit from two places, the spring release on your left and the canopyopen on your roof. One bonus for those of you lucky enough to own a 3D printer (plus abit of technical knowledge), is a 'build your own' Spitfire enginemanagement system with throttle quadrant, engine boost, trim and gearlever, courtesy of Aeroplane Heaven andAuthentiKit.This is designed to work with the Spitfire to give you the mostauthentic experience possible, it's something I certainly wouldn'tmind trying out for myself in the future! SoundEverybody knows the iconic sound of the Merlin engine, andAeroplane Heaven have it spot on! /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-8.jpgThe first thing I was struck by when loading the aircraft up forthe first time was the wonderful purr of the Rolls Royce Merlin atidle. This only gets better when slowly applying throttle as theSpitfire roars into life. I live reasonably close to an RAF base within the UK whichfrequently gets Spitfire and Hurricane fly-bys during annual events,so I have been fortunate enough to get a good sense of what thisaircraft sounds like. I found myself on a couple of occasions switching over to Drone Camand placing myself on the ground, only to swoop in on my position tohear the engine at full blast as I fly by. Audio for buttons, switches, and mechanical movements such as flaps and gear have alsobeen recorded and implemented, creating a very authentic experiencewhen flying the aircraft. During flight, as you bring the aircraft into a series of dives, the engine will speed up beyond your full-throttle setting and at thesame time start to increase its pitch. It is during this phase offlight that you will hear the iconic Spitfire Merlin roar, somethingusually heard during fly-bys and air shows. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-9.jpgWhen it comes to audio in a flight simulator add-on, it issomething that can make or break a product if done well orpoorly. Aeroplane Heaven has excelled in this, sampling audio from thereal aircraft to accurately recreate the sound from one of the mosticonic aircraft ever made. Flight DynamicsThe Spitfire feels good to fly. It's a nimble little aircraft thatcan get itself out of some tight situations. It only requires lightmovement of the stick to keep the aircraft steady, with biggermovements there for aerial evasion when you find yourself incombat. The Spitfire can also handle relatively steep climbs and sharpdrops, but try not to over speed the airframe as your controls willlock up as the airflow around your flight surfaces become too fast. When taking off, it is advised you leave the flaps up. By droppingthem into the first setting, you had to ensure you were flying atleast 120mph to raise the flaps again, otherwise you risked stallingthe aircraft out. Be sure to only put minor corrections into therudder too, as too much and you'll find yourself drifting to oneside. During my initial flights with the Spitfire, I found myselfleaving the runway and dragging onto the grass - a result of being tooaggressive with the rudder on takeoff. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-10.jpgLanding the Spitfire does take a bit of flight management, as themoment you deploy the flaps you lose all speed, and the aircraftbecomes a lot heavier to manage. I found myself often using fullthrottle to keep myself steady on approaches to minimise the risk ofstalling out before the runway. Opinion And Closing RemarksI must admit, I have been blown away by the Spitfire and how wellit has been recreated in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Aeroplane Heavenhave put a lot of care into this model, and it shows with one of themost realistic prop aircraft experiences I've used on this platform. The Spitfire looks good, feels good and sounds tremendous. It's amodel that's full of life and does a fine job of putting you in thecockpit, or as I found myself constantly doing, sitting on the groundand waiting for it to fly past me. The audio of this aircraft alone issomething worth shouting about. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-11.jpgIf you're looking for a WWII warbird or just have an interest inBritish World War history, then picking up the Spitfire is certainlyworth doing! Even if it's for the in-depth manual and reading materialit comes with, you are sure to learn a lot about the operation of theSpitfire and how pilots managed it throughout the Battle ofBritain. 4. /images/notams/notams22/auth0226.jpgVersion 3 of the Spitfire MkIX throttle was releasedtoday. Previous upgrades represented fairly small incrementalimprovements but this is a major upgrade incorporating the latesttechnologies going into AuthentiKit flight controls. 5. /images/notams/notams22/auth0117.jpgAuthentiKit is delighted to announce the release of theSpitfire chassis (or landing gear) lever. It has been a long timecoming as a very functional version was being tested way back in May2021. This control is so much the better though for the time andrefinements that have happened since. Firstly the introduction of ournew hydraulic damping technology has taken the tactile experience to anew level and is of course so very appropriate considering that thewhole undercarriage is powered by hydraulics. Secondly, an almostdisproportionate amount of development time went into the creation ofan accurate hydraulic status indicator. A Journey ConcludesThe first Spitfire flight control, the spade grip flight stick, wasreleased on December 5th, 2020. In many ways this new chassis levercontrol is the final piece of the jigsaw as we now have acomprehensive set of the primary controls for a Spitfire pilot. Spade grip flight stick with working brake lever and dual cannon/machine gun buttonThrottle quadrant with bomb drop buttonElevator trim wheel which can be calibrated for precise synchronisation with your simRudder trim wheelFlaps leverChassis leverThis is not to say that we are at the end of the line for Spitfirecontrols. The Spitfire Mk1A for example has a radiator lever and theUniversal Hub has been designed with an input for this. For theSpitfire MkIX, which has no such lever, this input may get used for afuel selector or coil boost/start buttons. Also, once the UniversalHub is upgraded to version 2 then many other inputs becomepossible. The Plan For 2022The plan for 2022 is to mobilise the freeware developer communityby publishing a series of SDKs which will make it very simple to builda wide range of replica controls by reusing the components which havebeen developed so far for levers/switches etc. This should hugelyincrease the rate of development of AuthentiKit controls. Magnetos, radios, multi-position flaps levers, trims of all sorts and many manymore controls are coming your way soon and for a wide range ofaircraft. Source

  11. /images/notams/notams21/auth0826.jpgThe flaps lever, compatible with either the Spitfire MkIX orSpitfire Mk1A is finally released today. For such a small flightcontrol this has taken a long time to get released and it isn’t forlack of effort. Several entirely new mechanisms and systems needed tobe developed and not just for the lever itself but also the mountingsystem and the universal hub. This flap lever uses one of the smallest bearings I’ve ever worked with and that brought its own set of engineering challenges. The inner diameter is just 2mm! It also uses some new switches which we haven’t worked with in this project before. It all comes together in a very compact new plugin component which has been named the mClick6700. It is expected to come in very handy on all kinds of controls. Flap leversGear leversFuel selectorsCowl flaps / radiator leversEtc.Instrument Panel Mounting SystemAnother major development which I've been prototyping for over ayear is the instrument panel mounting system. Something simple andeasily adjustable was needed that could be fitted to a desk veryquickly. The clamp system was the major hurdle as most things I tried(from microphone or camera desk clamps to masonry L-Bolts) were tooclumsy, expensive or had extra bits that got in the way. Finally Idiscovered a clamp used by jewellers when making fine cuts with a fretsaw. It led to the development of this clamp system, which supportsnot just the Spitfire flaps lever but all manner of radio/navequipment, starter/magneto buttons and much more. Universal Hub UpgradeThese flaps levers also prompted me to finalise the fullspecification of the Universal Hub Version One. Some planning aheadwas needed and you’ll see that the design accomodates a second engineinput which will support the Mosquito FB as well as landing gear andradiator flaps. It will also support a range of other aircraft, whether warbirds or GA. For those aircraft that don’t have weapons onthe flight stick and quadrant we will gain access to some unusedbuttons that can be remapped and used via the MISC1 and MISC2inputs. Possibilities are nav equipment or fuel selectors. Source
  12. Accu-Sim Spitfire MKI-IIPublisher: A2A SimulationsReview Author: Alex DickinsonSuggested Price: $79.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-04.jpgIntroductionHow can you introduce an aircraft likethe Spitfire? What can be said about this iconic aircraft that has notalready been said? This famous airframe designed in 1936 was intended to replace theRoyal Air Force's ageing biplane fleet. Used extensively throughoutWorld War 2, it was the only fighter to be in continuous productionthroughout the conflict. The Spitfire, renowned for its incrediblehandling, has been forever loved by its pilots and naturally feared byits enemy. During the Battle of Britain, German ace Adolf Gallandapparently even told Hermann Goering that he wanted a squadron ofthem. Originally part of their Wings of Power series, the Spitfire (aswell as a few other famous WW2 aircraft) are now available on P3D V4,and V5. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-01.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-02.jpgInstallationInstallation was quick and simple and is something I have come toexpect from A2A having owned quite a number of their models throughoutthe years. DocumentationThe 'Pilot's manual' discusses the aircraft's history as well asflying procedures. This was incredible in-depth at 100 pages long. Theformat was clear but also simplified in places so that it was veryeasy to reference pieces of data quickly. I also liked how the textstyle used and general format was that of the period. This gave thefeeling of actually reading a real vintage Spitfire manual. The second manual is called the 'Accu-sim manual', and I found thisto be more of a technical piece as it contained an enormous amount ofdetail about how the aircraft worked in the sim. It had lots ofdiagrams, pictures, and even how Accu-sim works. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-03.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-05.jpgExteriorWhen it came to the exterior, I was extremely impressed with theattention to detail and modelling of the Spitfire (even after allthese years). High resolution textures had been used throughout andeven the smallest details seemed not to have been overlooked. Forexample, there were even visual indicators on the wings to signal theposition of the landing gear, as well as the outlines for the bodypanels and rivets. Unfortunately, despite being available on thenewer-generation P3D platforms, there was sadly no PBR or dynamiclighting effects to be seen. That being said, even with theseomissions, the Spitfire was still visually impressive! As what's now a given with A2A models, you can change certaincomponents of the aircraft, and here the Spitfire was nodifferent. Options include the ability to change the canopy design andalso substitute the propellers between a 2-blade wooden prop, or athree-blade variable pitch metal one. Other realistic features includea ground crew in which to help keep the tail down during run-upchecks, plus a starter unit for the Mark 1's and aircraft jacks. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-06.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-07.jpgLiveriesDuring the Spitfire's life, there were 24 different variants (notincluding naval versions). In this package, A2A has modelled thefollowing early versions: Mark 1, Mark 2A, and Mark 2B. In total therewere 4 liveries (all from the Battle of Britain) and includes adescription about it accordingly, which is a nice addition. InteriorThe Spitfire's cockpit is similar to most fighters of the era andis best described as cramped. If you were on the small side, you had alittle more legroom, but for those with long legs...it was tight. However, once settled in, you get an idea of why the Spitfire wasso loved by those luckily enough to fly it. From a design layout(unlike an American fighter such as the P-40), it was much lessintimidating. This was mostly down to the way the cockpit wasdesigned. Due to the nature of the switches and gauges, learning thelayout was a lot easier than many other fighters of the time. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-10.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-11.jpgWhen starting the Spitfire for the first time (a realistic andhighly rewarding task in itself), you are greeted by not only a lot ofnoise, but also vibrations. This greatly adds to the realism and ifyou have never experienced it before in a simulator, it really isquite something. Flight ModelWhen talking about the Spitfire, you cannot help but conjure upromantic images of its legendary flying characteristics. Loved by herpilots, I have to say that the A2A model has pretty much the sameattributes. In the air she is an absolute delight, being both gracefuland agile. She is fast with acceleration to match...no surprise reallywhen you consider her pedigree! The way A2A have managed to replicate the flight model in a sim isa testament to their skill and perseverance. No wonder A2A have boththe loyal fanbase and reputation they have...it is well deserved. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-08.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-09.jpgHowever, whilst in the air she may be graceful, on the groundthings are decidedly different. The reason being is that the Spitfireis a taildragger and as everyone knows, that brings about its ownchallenges. When you add in the amount of power and torque of theMerlin engine, things get rather interesting to say the least! Pilotinput is paramount, and it takes quite a bit of practice to get thingsright. But being an A2A model...when you do get it right, oh boy is ita delight! SoundsThe Spitfire's Merlin engine is an audiophile's dream come true, and in the opinion of this reviewer, no other engine from WW2 comesclose to it in the sound department. Used not just in the Spitfire, but also in aircraft such as the Lancaster bomber and American P-51,the Merlin engine is a pure joy to listen to. /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-12.jpg /images/reviews/a2aspit/t/A2A-Spitfire-13.jpgConclusionNormally when I review an aircraft, I do hours' worth of researchto ensure I have ticked every box, but in the case of the Spitfire, itwas more like days. The experience A2A offer is quite simplyphenomenal. Even after all these years, there was nothing which mademe feel that the Spitfire was anything less than what it was almost adecade ago. Just like the real aircraft, A2A's rendition is a thingof beauty, and it seems that time has only made her more so. 13. /images/notams/notams21/heav0527.jpgA new video and exciting news on the Spitfire Mk1A. Recently, we were contacted by IntoTheBlue video productions with arequest to make a preview video of the Spitfire Mk1A. Naturally, we agreed and we have here, a link to the video. Now,this is not a review as the video was made earlier in the developmentwith more features and changes to come. However, what it is is adelightful romp through the Lake District in England and we especiallyliked the airfield beat-up at the end and of course, the very best ofElgar to accompany the pictures. The exciting news is about our collaboration with Authentikit whohave designed a set of unique simulator controls especially for theMk1A Spitfire. These kits are amazingly well-designed and are a verycost-effective way of getting a bespoke set of replica Spitfire flightcontrols for a very small outlay. The video shows you how to go aboutgetting a kit, how to assemble the components and next steps. The Authentikit controls are well-worth checking out.
