File name too long

Recommended Posts

message: file name too long when placing liveries in the community folder, and it baffles me! in the asobo folder the texture names of the liveries textures are actually the same bloody length!!!! I spent most of last night burning the oil trying to sort it out..... I even did a registry edit to accept long file names with no results, so here I am, I failed, my brain can not take anymore MS sim abuse! ha

This is probably plaguing anybody who did not specify a install location with the shortest name possible such as D:\MSFS
Gigabyte GA-X99 Gaming G1, i7-5960X, Noctua NH-D14, Crucial Ballistix Elite 64Gb, Nvidia GTX Titan X, Creative ZxR, Ableconn PEXM2-130, WD Black SN750 250Gb & 2Tb NVMe/Gold 10Tb HDD, Sony BDU-X10S BD-ROM, PC Power & Cooling 1200w, Cosmos C700M, Noctua iPPC 140mm x6, Logitech M570/K800, WinX64 7 Ultimate/10 Pro

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but I have a shortcut to the community folder right on the desktop so I don't have to hunt it down each time I go there. Also I shorten the names in the community folder to better discribe them and they still show up in the sim.

I have no problem finding the c folder I know my way around windows.... the problem is its now telling me the texture file names are too long in the liveries folder yet we all know this is BS...... I even tweaked the registry to expect file names over 250 characters as a last resort lol..... I've never seen a file name with more than 30 characters.... this is a gremlin that has popped up.... regardless of whatever I do the same message comes up "file name too long"... anyhow thanks but I'm off to play metro exodus.... last night is not going to run into all day this time.......

I've never seen a file name with more than 30 characters....

I've seen plenty of them IF you include the full path name, rather than the stand-alone file name.

For example:

The file name state.CFG can, with the full path, be a lot more than the apparent nine characters, perhaps something like the 77 characters in (including backslashes, etc.):

C:\Users\Name1\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\SimObjects\Basler_BT67\state.CFG

As Skylab would say:

Technically in Windows the file name includes the full path to the file, as well as the name of the file itself. This is why deeper folder hierarchies and long folder names will trigger this error.

One other thing you can try is to extract the liveries directly to to root folder C:\

If you are trying to do it from the Downloads folder, it just makes the path that much longer...

C:\Users\your name\Downloads

The error came before the tweek and the reason for the tweak..... I set it back today when I dropped the livery file with the so called "file name too long" in the root LocalCache\SimObjects folder without any issues... so this brings me to the community folder again, and that's where I parked the sim.... to look at it another day.....

I'm now pondering with the possibility that the Livery Mega Pack installer has upset the community folder.... anyhow it's not that urgent right now screenshots can wait.....

amazing what a brisk walk can do... I've decided to do a complete reinstall, that will rule out any conflicts with addons, they will be eliminated.....

well the best way for the filetoolong corruption. I ended up letting the sim reinstall while I slept.... problem solved overnight My mind points to addons causing these problems.... All was sweet until Mega Pack!!!!!!!! and all is sweet again RIP Mega pack....... some will come back and say its not that, it works fine on my rig..... but the reality is I don't have your rig........ I see why they are releasing it on Xbox it's a standard system making every Xbox more or less identical except for those that comtomise them.... so in theory you can load the disk on any xbox and it should just fire up and do its thing without question ha Edited by daspinall

I actually learned something from all this, since the sim is not yet quite finished we're bound to run into problems with 3rd party addons... so no more 3rd party addons for me until the sim is finished... lesson learned no more chasing the tail for me, let the dust settle then look at addons ............... the 3rd parties are doing the same as MS rushing their addons to market....

For those who are using addons/mods, it's important to keep them updated regularly and especially after an MSFS update/patch release.
