Buying a new computer to run FS2020

Recommended Posts

I am considering a new computer to run MSFS 2020. Here's listing of the features of one I'm looking at.

Windows 10 Home 64

9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9700 Processor with vPro™ (3.0 GHz, up to 4.70 GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 Cores, 8 Threads, 12 MB Cache)

16 GB DDR4 2666MHz

512 GB PCIe SSD

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 6GB

I would like to know if anyone feels this is adequate to to the job or should I invest in something better.

Thanks to you all.

Don

Check this post:

If you're going to stay at 1920 x 1080, your setup looks fine (based on the article I linked). Just make sure your memory is not single but dual channel. If you can bump it up to 32 GB, do it.

PS, regarding SSD, you'll want to leave the 512 GB one for FS and, if possible, add a 256 GB one for Windows. And get something for storage, either mechanical or SSD.

Best regards,

Hi.

A friend of mine has this: https://www.newegg.com/abs-ali437/p/N82E16883360016?&quicklink=true and he has a difficult time running Assobo20 in 4K, broken / distorted buildings, very low Level of detail, building popping up within a couple of miles of your locations like mushrooms...

He also added a 1TB SSD and a 3TB 7200 mechanical and he has much of the 3TB and part of others more than half full with the Assobo, Xplane and FSX / P3d.

I have an i7 rest very similar to above and I have most of my storage used up with just MSFSX, XPlane and a couple of other sims, very low storage need for those.

Specs below they have some discount running now:

Intel Core i9 10900KF 3.70GHz (5.30GHz Turbo Boost), 10-Core 20-Thread

ASUS ROG STRIX NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB, White

ASUS ROG STRIX Helios GX601 White Edition RGB Mid-Tower

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII FORMULA Z490, WiFi 6

ASUS ROG RYUJIN RGB AIO Liquid CPU Cooler 360mm

G.Skill TridentZ RGB 32GB DDR4 3600MHz

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD

Windows 10 Home 64-bit

VR Ready

When running at 1920x1200 (an odd size about 115% of pixels in 1920x1080), I am running on mostly ultra settings, and don't have any of the problems you describe. I do have a fast internet connection, and that is important with this program, as much of the scenery is loading off the net rather than on your storage device. I do have Windows 10 on an SSD and the sim (along with other programs) on an M.2. If you are running a 1440p or less monitor, you really don't need umpteen cores, 8 seem to be plenty. You do need a strong video card. (My GPU is the most challenged part of my system, it is running at ~56-57%, CPU at ~35% and plenty of memory reserve, it is using about 11-12 GB). According to Tom's Hardware memory speed, and enabling XMP are significant boosts to performance of this program.

If you are trying to keep cost to a minimum, you are on the right track. With this in mind, I would tweak two things you have listed.

1. The memory should be at least 3000Mhz, and that speed should be enabled in Bios.

2. The video card should be upgraded to GTX 1660 Ti or at least Super at little extra cost.

Asus Prime Z490-P motherboard, Intel i7-10700K CPU, 32GB DDR4 3200 memory, GeForce RTX 2070-8GB video, 1TB M.2 SSD, Windows 10-64 bit, Acer 23"WS LCD and Benq 19" LCD, Logitech Flight Yoke, Thrustmaster Pedals, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick, TrackIR 5, MSFS Deluxe and FSX Deluxe, UTX-USA2, UTX-TAC, GEX-NA, ASN, WOAI

I think you have given way unwarranted credence to the detractors. There are a few annoyances, but the product is stunning as it is, and actually runs smoothly and you will be pleased with the graphics.
