  1. well, if he sees the scenery, then the sim must be running and there must be a fsx.cfg and a scenery.cfg. Sounds more like that "Show Hidden Files" default setting is still on... to show hidden/system files, 1 display C drive in explorer window 2 select tools from menu 3 select "folder options", then "view" 4 from the options, select radio button "show hidden files, folders, and drives" "missing" folders should now be visible. If so, your 'nanny' has been somewhat 'neutered'. Loyd
  2. Oh, no fair! Picking a 'favorite' airport is nearly impossible; tastes and interests change over 14 years! I might have selected KGWS (in Colorado) as a favorit-est but according to the actual records it's only 31st for departures and 13th for landings - apparently I fly here FROM Eagle and Aspen a lot more than I take off from here. Admittedly, I fly more P3d these days, but this count is from the logbook I have used continuously since the 'pre-release' version of FSX that featured Princess Juliana airport at St Maarten, moving it into each new fsx install over the years since. the summarized statistics (imaged) are presented by fsxlogbook still available in the library: fsxlogb3.zip (posted apr 14, 2008) sorted on Number of Take Offs (descending order) KEDW - Edwards AFB:my default airport. I naturally test new aircraft here so it's bound to have the most departures KFHR - Friday Harbor, the original default. BONN - personally built fictional Flight Test center at Bonneville Salt Flats Utah KSAN - San Diego; adjacent to the docked carrier at North Island NAS. Lots of carrier approaches practiced here EGLC - London City; where my UK friends gather LIPB - Bolzano, It; in the midst of the Dolomites region of the Alps KRIV - Long runways for testing bigger aircraft KFCA - Glacier Park adjacent to awesome Glacier Nat'l Park EGOD - Llanbedr, Wales; nearest airport to Machynlleth and the 'Mach Loop' U27 -- Hurricane Mesa; closest to the Canyons of Zion National Park KHQM - Bowerman; nice ORBX apt on the Olympic Peninsula EGNL - Barrow; at the edge of the UK Lake District KENV - real apt adjacent to fictional BONN KSEA - Seattle for exploring the Cascades LXGB - Gibraltar... what was I here for so much? ELDP - Fictional ultrlight dirt strip at the Lake District TNCM - Princess Juliana on St Maarten (high use with pre-release sampler version) EGOV - Valley RAF; near Snowdonia and the Mach Loop . KGWS - Glenwood Springs; along Glenwood Canyon and near Grizzly Creek Canyon (31st for departures/ 13th for landing) Is my love of the wrinkly parts of the map showing through? videos linked below include some of the mentioned areas: Grizzly Creek near KGWS; Machynlleth; Cascades; Carrier near KSAN; Zion Park My "favorite" is whatever gets me close to my mountains, valleys, and canyons. Happy flyin' all! Loyd
  3. OK, but keep the funnin' down to maybe just once a week; we be discussin' sum serious stuff here :)
  4. some ideas to share: *Talk with us here: ask questions; tell us of your earlier fs activities *Take your time getting under way: keep it fun and a hobby, not a job! *when I joined this site, I came to the forum and read about six month's worth of previous posts (I don't find reading a chore) just to see what people were experiencing. *Go to the 'sticky' at the top of this forum page and see how others enjoy the sim *Join a multiplayer group; 'my' group of senior gents flies casual flights on Mon and Tue at 1900Z. (Israel, Germany, UK, and US). You can drop me a private message if you wish to discuss it. *Take the 'flight training': I managed to complete the FS2000 or FS2002 version and get my 'pilot's certificate'. Loyd ps I did get a 1 hr introductory flight lesson as a gift from my son a few years back and found the C180 looked almost exactly like the sim's default 172. Turns out my instructor even flew FS9 occasionally. after 20 years of simming, the real flight was a 'piece of cake'.
  5. I resign in favor of the gentleman with the 'lower' starting letter..... I'm LLIVAUDAIS; He won also by being first and simplest - I live in the age of complication. Most people probably just want the simplest; I like options. Loyd
  6. Inuss gave you the simplest, straightforward answer but there are alternative options. I've found occasionally in the past that I wanted a few different startup 'defaults', thus a not too complicated alternate approach...in the fsx.cfg you can have multiple startups with all commented out (and inactive) except the one you want. Change it in the cfg file before booting up FSX [uSERINTERFACE] . . SITUATION=c:\users\dad\documents\flight simulator x files\alt_default.FLT // KEDW //SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM // original //SITUATION=c:\users\dad\documents\flight simulator x files\Previous Flight.FLT ;SITUATION=C:\Users\Dad\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\KSAN traps // for Carrier landings ; a single semicolon is also a valid Comment indicator and keeps the text easier to read I think Loyd
  7. Aurora... a thin, cirrus-like green glowing 'cloud' layer; big disappointment first seen on a 'diplomatic' AI flight from BNA to Moscow somewhere up in the Greenland/Iceland area overnight; perhaps on a winter evening. I'd say you haven't missed much.... Shooting Star: as best I recall from an age ago when I tried modifying the shooting star into a Photon Torpedo: looking at the fx code, the shooting star is a effect that is referenced to the aircraft (or tower); occurs rarely; is displayed 500m above the aircraft; is limited to only spot and tower view; has a random duration of 1 to 3 seconds; moves in a randomized speed and direction. I've seen them several times but I rarely fly at night any more though I usually ONLY fly the locked spot view... it helps to be in a dark location and zoomed out a bit. It happens quickly so you have a better chance if you're attentive and 'usually lucky' - or do videos. I don't think most of the effects codes have changed since FS2000 or thereabouts... Loyd
  8. to clarify the difference, just (1)change the aircraft settings [realism] from INDICATED to TRUE AIRSPEED while you're flying or (2) just watch the Ground Speed displayed on the GPS screen; 320 knots Indicated at 38,000' is a lot faster than it looks. Yeah, what Inuss said. Loyd
  9. Good Catch Flattermann ... I incorrectly thought he'd copied the DLL but, in re-reading, he did say INSTALL and the path is missing the \SDK\Environment Kit\ portion of the installation path that we'd expect. I do find it very odd to install to the Desktop but I don't have any experience to suggest that it wouldn't work there. I think I'd visually find that dll and make sure the path is correctly defined in the dll.xml. L
  10. I listed these FSX locations the other day in another post and noticed then that when I looked at the address bar while viewing the "C:\ProgramData" location, that it showed the Users\username\AppData location... so I assume that ProgamData is just a collection of links to actual locations so perhaps it is also the quickest route to scenery.cfg if you don't know if it's in "users" or "AllUsers" - mine is actually in "all users" in Win7. My FSX-SE equivalent in Win10 continues to just show ProgramData, so OK, just go there; at least that seems to be a "common" location in the two OS's... go with whatever is simple! L
  11. well, as fanatic as M/S is about having the correct versions of the SDK and the sim properly matched, I'd think that the SE version DLL is only correctly matched to FSX.exe (SE) but not when it is being used with disk version FSX (since it's being used with a fsx.exe of a different version). Just my guess; I've thought about just copying it also but never got around to testing it... Loyd
  12. I've only had this happen ONCE and that was long ago but I'll offer my opinion... a normal scenery library entry looks like this: ............. example only ............... [Area.120] Title=Addon Scenery Local=Addon Scenery Layer=127 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE the scenery cfg entry that caused the problem looked like this: [Area.120] Title=Addon Scenery Remote=Addon Scenery Layer=127 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE I didn't set it up that way and I didn't change it to remote ( so..... magic? Gremlins? ) The 'remote' entry properly occurs when YOU add scenery that is stored on a slow remote location and you want to cache it on the HDD for faster loading before it is used by the sim. I've tested this and I know it to be true... What I would do is search your scenery.cfg (open in notepad) for the word "remote" and if it is found, then edit it back to "local" unless YOU purposely installed it to be remote. Your scenery.cfg should/may be in either Your Users\username\appData\roaming\microsoft\FSX (or the equivilant AllUsers location if you installed it for all users - like I did) Once it's working correctly, make a backup and remember what fixed it - we may never know what caused it...but report back when it's fixed. Hope this helps. Loyd
  13. There's really no excuse for not keeping backups of important files such as: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\FSX.CFG C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\Cameras.cfg C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xml C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\exe.xml C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\Controls\Standard.xml..... your keybindings. and the Scenery.cfg (wherever you find it) C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\scenery.cfg or C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\FSX\Scenery.cfg and/or C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\Scenery.cfg (which is a pointer to the actual copy in user's folder) Asking "Why?" doesn't fix anything (stuff just happens). Having a good, CURRENT backup just gets it fixed real quick (No answers needed). Loyd
  14. just in case you have issues installing at a location of your choice, there's a check box at the beginning of the install procedure that says "advanced install" - or something like that - You need to check this to get the option to install elsewhere. Good luck. Loyd
  15. Might just be you.... I usually boost the elevator and aileron effectiveness of most downloaded aircraft, but just so you know: my Baron 58 uses default flight_tuning settings - all are set to 1.0 and I fly mostly with fingertips only on the stick (full sensitivity and almost no dead zone; always have) If other aircraft seem 'normal' you could reduce the Baron's elevator effectiveness by 0.2 or 0.4 and see if you prefer the way it feels. Loyd
  16. I guess the developers never anticipated anyone trying to use mouse-look and mouse-yoke at the same time - that's what you're effectively doing. It kinda seems like the game has to remember two mouse cursor positions - one for the view position and one for the Yoke position(s). But there's only one mouse location. It'll be used for yoke UNLESS you press spacebar, then it'll be used for the view direction - at least that's the way it's working in my sim. You have to mouse-look back to center BEFORE you switch to the mouse-yoke function. If you want an uncentered view while mouse-yoking, you can move a normal view there or create a new custom camera (which is probably the way I'd go, so it'd always be available). I can see a use for it if I needed a/some views out the left window while flying patterns, but we do have those runway views that do exactly the same thing but additionally keep the runway end exactly in the center of your view. What makes it confusing is the 'reset' doesn't move the memorized cursor position so everything using the cursor goes back to it.... hope that helps Loyd
  17. If you can continue to fly and see scenery below, I would guess the sim recovered. I won't ask why you "did" before asking.... I won't ask why you remove/delete things instead of just moving them out of the way. I will ask if you still have a copy of the default scenery.cfg in your fsx root folder that the sim would use to rebuild. I will ask if you have a backup copy in the original location of your scenery.cfg I will ask if you tried to open the scenery library inside the sim in the usual manner. I will ask if deleting the cfg file fixed the crashes... I will ask if you have disk or Steam version (because the Steam repair method is super easy) I will ask if you have a backup of your whole basic FSX so this doesn't happen again (if you have a disk version) Loyd
  18. my thoughts exactly but here is the zip filename: c124_v10x.zip L
  19. I use the GPS primarily for following a flightplan, ground speed, and distance to next waypoint - rarely as a "map" alone. The MAP I only use for manual positioning to an exact location (or trying to precisely locate a runway I can't visually see). I use Plan-G for all other mapping, positioning and flightplanning functionality. Not sure what you mean by "default NAV page"; my GPS always opens with the map first. Loyd
  20. Dang, you're right; I have WAMA but haven't used it in ages. That would work. I now remember placing a bunch of Tornado's for another vid but using a Flight Recording for their display afterwards. The earliest and easiest placement method I ever used was simply to make a custom flightplan where all the desired AC start at the desired airport and remain parked there for the entire week EXCEPT that once each week they fly one single pattern at (maybe) 3 AM and then return to their parking place so they always are parked in place during daylight hours. The AI flightplan software is easier to use than installing the SDK anyway! summary: SDK, WAMA, AI flightplan or Flight recording - lots of options. Loyd
  21. You "might" get all the default aircraft to display (though I doubt it) by using the SDK to place and display them, but remember the cost.... you've only got 4 GB of memory to hold 'all' those aircraft. I have 87 extra aircraft in another folder available but they take up another 12Gb of space - I can't display all those at the same time (not to mention another 400+ waiting outside of FSX that it can't 'see'). So, yes, you can display aircraft available to your sim, but only up to the 'approaching 4 gig limit'. You can display some practical number and video record them repeatedly and then splice the vids together so it looks like they are all there simultaneously but that's as close as you can get in the 32-bit FSX environment. You can see a brief sample in my "Lethal Weapons" video on my YouTube channel linked below or directly . Loyd
  22. How can you not know that FSUIPC always saves that ending state as "Previous Flight" if you shut down normally? If you don't use it for anything else, it's worth installing just for that. Surely, you just forgot (FSX being such an ancient, antique program and all...) Loyd
  23. Steve If the link that Brian/Longbreak provided created more curiosity, then you would do well to read the actual Scenery and Terrain info that is part of the SDK, either the one available in your installed SDK or an identical one online. I also have a sort-of alternate version I wrote up about 10 years ago that may (or may not) present some of the concepts more clearly. It can get pretty deep with more numbers than most people need but you can keep it as 'shallow' as you'd like. Loyd
  24. I used to do a lot of AI traffic back in the day with FS9/FSX but my preference these days is to use flight recordings instead. Yes, you have to fly the complete routes yourself initially but you could have more accurate-looking carrier ops, Search/Rescue patterns, crop dusters, sight-seeing 'tours', formation flying, air shows with aerobatics - the list isn't "endless" but you do have quite a list of things that are possible to record that you'd never be able to program with the limitations of the AI feature. I'd suggest FSRecorder if you can get it working. I personally used the flight recording feature of JoinFS in my videos (linked below; including a carrier landing in " "). I've played a flight recording that was visible to others during a Multiplayer session, so that's an additional option; we use JoinFS for the MP connectivity ( FSX and multiple versions of P3D together). I'd like to hear back when you find what works best for you... Good Luck. Loyd
