  1. Fantastic pics! At Catalina, don't land short, or roll too long after landing. It is a great airport to visit. Closet experience one can have in real world aviation to landing on a carrier (I'm old enough to talk wood deck and props - T-28C and USS Lexington).
  2. USS Macon flying over Manhattan 1933. Recreating another well know photo of a master of engineering during the golden age of lighter than air.
  3. Until the appropriate forum location is determined, this topic stream is a place to post screenshots taken in FSX.
  4. Tiger, This is sage advice to all of us no matter what computer or which FS version we use. I'd love to have the sliders at max for everything, but have made appropriate compromises so that I get enough of the eye candy I want, while keeping FPS reasonably high. Personally, except of screenshots, the reality of the flight characteristics take precedence above all.
  5. Thanks Hyperdark, I guess I need o be more attentive. Either way, the DC-3 is an eternal classic.
  6. I could swear I just heard the announcer yell "Let's get ready to rumble!!!!"
  7. Adrian, might we consider using the MSFS 2020 Screen Shots forum for all versions of FS, even if slightly renamed? I think one location allows all users to share and visually experience the greater universe of FS.
  8. Thanks Loki. Will do. I agree that one forum for all screenshots allows us to share across all versions of FS. even should it remain where it is.
  9. There is a individual forum for screenshots for MSFS 2020, X-Plane, and Prepar 3D, but NOT for FSX. Could a forum be made for FSX Screenshots? Where do the FSX flyers post screenshots? I have been posting them directly from my profile. Maybe I'm just not seeing something. Thoughts? and Thanks.
  10. My real tailwheel time is limited to the J-3 Cub and Cessna 170. Definitely NOT a trike. But the 1942 J-3 gave me some of my most memorable flying experiences. Wondering if the C-117 the Corps flew, with the even larger barn door rudder flew much differently than the earlier DC-3s. Happy Simming.
  11. You got me interested to see the handling qualities of the FSX DC-3. I have never flown the aircraft before, so I took off from Iwojima (RJAW) and flew a 1.2 hour flight by dead reckoning to Chichijima (RJCI). Ground handling was stable during a slow paced taxi for takeoff. Takeoff roll and climb out were without any surprises, and the aircraft was trimmed to nearly hands off level flight. Flap extension showed significant but trimmable nose up. Lowering the gear definitely slowed the aircraft. Hardest part was flying just above VSo (gear down stall speed) since Chichijima's dirt runway is only 2300 feet long. Throttles were reduced at about 100 ft before touch down, with immediate brakes on landing. I "may" have trimmed some palm trees at the far end of the field with my props, but no one saw me, and I deny everything! This is a fun aircraft to fly, and I look forward to flying this with increasing realism settings.
  12. Some FSX aircraft have RadAlts (radar altimeters) for displaying the aircraft height AGL. I am looking to add a stand alone window to display only the RadAlt when I need it, similar to the magnetic compass window/view. Is this created similar to a 2D cockpit (bmp + alpha + gauge) or by a different method? Thanks in advance.
  13. Which flight sim version are you using, and which DC-3 model? I can only comment of FSX version. Thx
  14. In light of the recent crash of a Yeti Airways ATR-72 while approaching Pokhara Nepal, this article/video gives a good idea of the difficulties associated with flying there. Add to that an unfortunate long term concern for pilot qualifications and proficiency, the risks of a crash become exponential.

  15. Just noticed that the top tab, Popular Downloads/FSX Aircraft, takes you to FSX Jetliners instead of FSX. Thx.
  16. Good question, something to ask the admins here. I don't focus on payware so I don't find this an issue.
  17. Excellent advice. Planning your approach well in advance of an arrival is key to a safe and stress free cockpit. Sim aircraft do not model well the real world dynamics of near/trans-Mach airflow, other than some buffeting a speed warnings. What many are not aware of is the high speed considerations of rotorcraft. The two most common issues are the advancing blade acceding Mach (the LOUD popping sound of a Huey in a tight higher G turn), and retreating blade stall. Think of the speed of the rotor tip as it turns on the ground, and then add forward airspeed. You can easily reach Mach at the blade tip with high speeds or increased loads. As the rotorcraft approaches VNE (speed never exceed) the retreating blade, since it is moving away from the airflow, can stall (remember a rotor blade IS an airfoil). This generates buffet, immediate loss of lift, and for single rotor aircraft a rapid roll into the stalled side. So much going on out there that we can't see. And remember, flying takes skill, hovering takes finesse. Happy simming!
  18. Good points zippy, especially on the report button. Keeping the forums focused and helpful is best.
  19. I attempted to download scenery from several sections, FXX, 2004, etc., and they all worked. For me, I look at all the sites as not just competition, but also as companion sites to the betterment of the sim flying community, There are those who prefer one over another, and within each of the sim sites I find various articles and downloads that may not be on another. My preference is for FlightSim, but I also visit the other sites periodically to see what's happening across our sim community.
  20. The home page has "Recent Uploads," "Latest Posts." and lists of all the forums with their most recent comment date. I find this easy to use since I scroll to the forum topics of interest with ease.
  21. Thank you airernie, a very helpful reply. I'll be adding more ai aircraft now. BTW, for those who wish to hone their formation flying skills, flying with ai aircraft is a great way to practice.
  22. I see many aircraft and ai files available that state both FSX and 2004. What has been the experience from FSX flyers out there when using these items? My experience has only been with flyable aircraft, and I'm estimating 6 out of 10 don't work properly due to gauges not working in FSX. Anyone care to share their success in ensuring these 2004 to FSX items work in FSX? Tom Gibson has been uploading a wonderful set of classic aircraft/ai, but I hesitate if these may not work properly in FSX. Thanks
  23. Semper Fi Michael. HMM-161 and plank holder with HMM-166. I'll send a PM and test that system for Adrian
