Most important upgrade
GhostTown replied to ericarndt23's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 General Discussion
You're ram is fine...upgrade the GPU and the processor to match...I would go with a 2080ti and I9-9900K and an Asus rog strix motherboard. Honestly I would just go with a dedicated new system for msfs2020.- 9 replies

they are going to have a Trainer where none of the instruments work. All of my knobs and buttons work when I fly VR...just like in any virtual cockpit. -

I have a full cockpit and I switched to VR. Unless you have a 360 degree view at home you just can't compete with the immersion of VR. -

I have 10 saitek flight instrument panels, and I used to fly ifr all the time with fsx. My main stopping point with VR was that I thought I would have to give IFR up. I was totally wrong...in fact IFR in VR is even better, and more realistic because every plane is accurate...for example, even when I fly with my cockpit panel, my instruments (6 pack) are not where they should be for every GA plane, because every plane is different. I usually don't bother to adjust them as long as I have them all. In VR it is always accurate, so you LEARN to fly every plane you are in. You also get to experience all kinds of planes accurately..GA..jets etc...instead of having a "one size fits all" home cockpit. I actually prefer the virtual knobs and buttons because they are easier to turn, and they don't break! I have been flying with the bulb out on my AP for years...and my altitude knob is a bit finicky. VR is low maintenance with complete accuracy. -

IFR is easier and more realistic in VR...I do it all the time. VR will have a virtual iPad that you can look up approach plates on...right now I just get all the frequencies etc from the Garmin. Same as before. Either way the one drawback I thought I would have with VR isn't I couldn't do instrument approaches...I was completely wrong. The difference is I actually took the time to try VR to find out. Honestly even if only VFR VR is worth it...IFR was just a bonus for me :) -
Upgrade everything or just ram?
GhostTown replied to GhostTown's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 General Discussion
OK...I might just get a whole new system since I need to upgrade more than just ram. -
Hamburger runs
GhostTown replied to GhostTown's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 General Discussion
Yes I remember that. By all means take screenshots as part of the flight plan... especially for pilotage...but can also be as simple as dropping a route for IFR and VOR too. -
My old system is an I7 with a GTX 780ti and 8GB ram so I can accept minimum recommended specs or if I upgrade to 32GB ram then it would be best to upgrade to an I9 and a 2080ti probably...what do you guys think? Oh I need Windows 10 also...can you still upgrade to Windows 10 for free? That means I have to redo all my installs and drivers.

You say VR is not there yet? Have you even tried Aerofly fs2 in VR with the orbx scenery packs? I can't even fly fsx anymore. VR (if not already) will be the best way to flight sim. It is already hands down the best for gaming by far. As some point in the near future, VR will have hand-tracking. They will constantly improve on the headsets. They will have Virtual tablets for approach plates...just like in the real world pilots have tablets. There will be nothing you can do with a cockpit build that you cannot do better in VR. I have a great homebuild...probably better than most, but I have to acknowledge VR as being the better option moving forward.

Now that we have real world scenery how about bringing back hamburger runs? Members can leave flight plans...IFR, VFR or just pilotage. They can be real world ones that they have flown, or just memorable ones they have done in the sim. Its a great way to see where the locals are flying, and to find those hidden gems.

I don't know how you guys do it, considering that most of you are flying with less equipment than me. I just set up my old fsx rig to get ready for msfs2020, but not sure I want to put the money into upgrading as the current specs only meets minimum/recommended settings...not until a VR version comes out. You can see it in these pics...I flew around for about 2 minutes and that was it. The view seems so inadequate coming from VR. I have not finished setting up my panels, gaming chair, rudder pedals, or have the (49" wide screen) monitor in the correct spot yet. Anyway I will plough through, but even with the amazing scenery of 2020 I know I will just be thinking about how much better it will be in VR. AND NO I do not wish to use my trackIR. The whole point of having physical instrument panels like I have is to have freedom of head movement to look at charts etc without messing up the view. Anyway I will give msfs2020 it a try...and continue to fly areofly and flyinside on my VR setup I started with just a yoke, and progressed from there to where I am now. The most expensive part are the flight instrument panels (fips) which are about $150 a piece, but well worth it considering the cost getting other cockpit panels with gauges. They are just usb plug and play as well so simple to run. The actual cockpit shell was only $300 that houses them, and the saitek panels. My setup is probably the cheapest cockpit setup that can be put together, but imo the best bang for the buck. You could always just use a monitor for the instruments instead of the fips and save a lot of money, but I prefer the tactile feel of turning knobs and pressing buttons instead of having to use the mouse. So basically you could replicate my setup (including the monitor & gaming chair but not including the computer) for about 3k USD. OR you could spend $300 and get VR.

They don't deserve respect because they are the same people who probably trashed early sims...and then they trashed the virtual cockpit, and then they trashed trackIR. If simming was left to these kind of simmers nothing would ever advance because they would never attempt anything until it reaches mass adoption. The true simmers keep an open mind and try everything. I have been simming since c64...I have don't monitor instrument panels, trackir, full, all kinds of hardware and instrument panels, and VR.
-
I don't know what system you have but I experience no lagging and the scenery and panels are exceptional...you do realize that VR in aerofly is using orbx scenery right? You guys seem to think that VR today is the same as it was in the 80s. Have monitors not improved over the years? Have flight sims improved? Why do you think VR is any different? We already have in device head tracking now so no need for sensors around the room...hand tracking is next. Did you complain about flight simulator on the c64? It was part of the evolution and we wouldn't be here today without it. VR is the next evolution.

Saitek flight instrument panels?
GhostTown replied to GhostTown's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 General Discussion
Thanks...well I might as well set up my crappy 10 fip flat panel, with my X-rocker seat and my ultra wide 49" curved gaming monitor while I wait for the VR version. ;) -
There is going to be VR support. That's why we want our own forum! You guys keep harping about how you can't see the panel blah blah and that's totally not true if you actually tried actual VR with some of the leading VR sims like aerosoft. Besides...do you REALLY think Microsoft is going to release a VR version that isn't IFR friendly with fuzzy panels? Lol nope!
-
The head movement is the same as in real life, you just look around. It is NOT like the exaggerated movements of trackir where you turn your head just a little, to turn the view a lot. I always felt I had to hold my head still with trackir because of this...it got fatiguing. On of the first things you will notice is the freedom of movement that VR gives you. AND btw the head tracking in current VR is built into the headset with cameras...you do not need to mount sensors on the walls anymore. Total freedom. This is a video using War thunder...not a simulator and YOU KNOW THAT so quit trying to gaslight the topic. In Aeorfly they are using orbx scenery packs in VR...you have a problem with orbx scenery now? Your loss. My homebuilt was better than any of yours I bet, and I dismantled it overnight as soon as I tried VR. You don't even have the home cockpit I had, so you are even worse off than I was and still refuse to go VR...so if you are content with a 2D monitor view then your prerogative.

Hey can somebody repost the link showing compatible hardware? I want to find out if saitek FIPS will work.
