  1. Nice shots! I've always a fan of Puget sound, despite the weather. And I agree with Jan, that's very nice FS9! Michael
  2. Hey George, It's good to see you posting!! I really like your fictional airline!

  3. Right now I'm flying Around The World In Eighty Days on the Aerosoft forum. Sorry it's too late to start now as we're somewhat holding to Mr. Fogg's schedule. London to London. But I think even those not making the trip would enjoy reading about the adventures of others. Go to Aerosoft Community and click on Clubs. The Around The World will show right up. YOU REALLY MUST READ Lambert in Bi-Planes written by Windswept! He manages to sneak every old pun and stereotype in fiction into one trip around the world!;) Rupert
  4. I'm currently enjoying something I hadn't tried before. AeroSoft is doing a 80 Days Around The World fly-in that started on Oct 2nd. (Which is the date Phogg started his trip. People fly as, close as possible, to the PHOGG balloon trip route. We have specific legs we must complete during a specific number of day's time-frame. And we're keeping a log and spreadsheet of our trip. It's great fun and making me fly to places I'd not have thought to fly before. (I'm currently at Port Said (HEPS) waiting to start the next leg leg to Calcutta. I'm flying my HondaJet). But various people are flying all sorts of planes and a few even going by sea on ships and using & other transport such as trains as well!!?? The basic rule is:If there is a sim, pretty much any sim, you can travel by and make all the required legs in the 80 day time frame, it's pretty much all good! And there's no problem changing vehicles or even sims as long as you are simming the trip and staying on time. So we have people on P3D, FS9, FSX, X-Plane, Trains, etc.,etc. Some of the sims people are using I'd never heard of before!! I wish I'd known about this earlier!! I'd have really talked it up here!! I think everyone flying FSX would love the concept! Go to the AeroSoft site and under "Clubs" find the Around The World In 80 Days Club listings. I think you'll get a kick out of it. If you want to know how things are going read the DIARIES!! I especially enjoy the "Mr. Lambert in Biplanes diary!" That poster is known as "Windswept." Rupert
  5. Hey Khalid. I think you are truly thinking outside the box!!
  6. Not at all!! Ships are very handy taxis for moving Marines from place to place so we can continue to save the civilized world! Speaking of which. You should contact Phantom Tweak. He's a huge fan of carrier ops. Perhaps you can drive the taxi so he'll have a way around without running out of fuel in his F-18. ;) Michael
  7. +1! A 3.5 i5 should do a fair job. I agree before you buy a lot of software that won't work with another sim platform you do need to realize FSX, Steam, & P3D are all based on a more than decade old design. Unless of course you just want to make sure your son and you both are using the same thing I'd see what this newly introduced 64-bit software looks like. I also agree with someone's recommendation for his joy-stick. It's a nice one. Having said that, I use a yoke or a joystick depending on what I'm "flying" normally uses. But I just don't feel I'm involved without a set of rudder pedals! IMHO, regardless of what else you decide to get for yourself or him, include Rudder Pedals! RW probably 99%+ of everyone uses them! ;) Welcome and Enjoy! Michael
  8. Hey Wildman, I've flown in and out of 2S1 several times, before and after your post, but can't seem to find the saucer. Where might I look in relation to the airport? BTW: I was just reading on Wikipedia that is the first press use of the term flying saucers. Michael
  9. Ulster? Do you mean like EGAD Newton Airds? Or perhaps EGAC Belfast City? I've not been that far north, so I can't say how accurate this is. But this ORBX scenery does look pretty good to me. Hope this helps, Michael
  10. What they both said!! The less you're running the more FSX you can run!! Remember most CPUS have trouble keeping up with anything but the most basic FS in the first place!;) In fact when on "long flights" or high scenery or IFR flights, I even turn my internet completely off. It's a real P.I.T.A. to have something pop up and cause a "crash" near the end of a long or involved flight!!!:mad::mad: Michael
  11. OK. Now I know what you want. You want the entire world to look as it looks from outer space (ie Google). That's a common issue I've run up against especially among Brits and Irishmen who live and die by their Ordinance Survey Map.. If it isn't exactly where it is on the OSM, it isn't correct! That's a yes and no answer. If it is "photoreal," it shows everything exactly where it is seen from outer space and your OSM. You are correct in that respect. However, "photoreal," being a shot from outer space has no depth definition. Yes your favorite boozer, your school, etc. are exactly in the spot they actually are as shown by the OSM. But they look like Gulliver had trod upon them during a walk through Liliput!!!! So if you choose to enter your boozer for a pint, you'll have to get down on your hands and knees and crawl in. Then have your lid while laying flat because your favorite pub is displayed as less than 2' tall!! Is that a good or a bad thing? It's your call. But before you spend a ton on one type of scenery or another, you need to decide what works best for you!! If depth perception isn't as important as location, "photoreal" is probably something you should consider. However, unless you fly at FL20 or higher, it will look as though you are flying over Liliput!.
  12. I haven't tried that VFR scenery. However, I was flying near Shannon a few minutes ago Real Weather & RT with ORBX EU Ireland. I also have Northern Ireland and all their UK products. This is EICN. Two shots of the Limerick area. A nearby refinery. Finally, two shots at Shannon. One of final, the other while taxiing. Hope this helps! Michael
  13. That's a nice video of flying. However we're already flying. How about a video of driving? I can't see immersion to flying from outside the plane or driving from outside the car. We did that with slot cars starting at least 40 years ago. I can imagine using the yoke as the steering wheel and the rudders as pedals for an auto-shift car. (Though I never RW drove an auto-shift race car! But I know some are designed that way.) Perhaps the throttle could be the aircraft throttle and the two pedals be brake and clutch. Or use say the flaps switch for sequential gear selection and the right rudder for gas, left for brake. Has the concept come far enough to do that yet? If so, I feel a video from "behind the wheel" would be very helpful in attracting interest! ;) Michael OK, I just watched four more videos and two were "inside" the car. However I never saw the wheel move. Are they steering by rudder pedals? What is the control setup? Do you have gas, brakes, transmission controls? This is much closer to what it would take to interest me. But I certainly can't understand without more info!
  14. Hi All! On the subject of actually flying an aircraft. I spoke with a long time friend who recently retired from flying big cargo jets in and out of Iraq and many other trouble spots throughout the world for DHL. He and his wife were both PICS for DHL for many years. I asked Jens how often in his multi-year career with DHL that he actually got to hand fly a DHL plane? He replied only once other than in a simulator, when his autopilot didn't properly engage! And no, I can't even remember where in the world it was he said that happened. My next question was. How did you manage to safely fly and land your plane that day without autopilot? His reply. I flew a Mooney to and from KCVG whenever I went on or off duty. Nuff Said!!!:mad::mad: Michael
  15. Hey Bert, funny you'd say that!! I live near the KSDF UPS World Hub as well as the DHL KCVG hub and the soon to be Amazon KCVG hub. So I happen to know several long time commercial pilots who fly for those carriers. What do talk about regretting in their career? To quote you, "I tried doing a tiny flight (Gatwick (EGKK) to Redhill (EGKR)), about five miles without the autopilot at all, and found that I got really tired very quickly - it is much more stressful!" . Who buys or rents small Cessnas, etc. today? In my area it's often professional pilots who like to practice and recall their stick and rudder skills during their off time. There's even a "fly-in community" near here where pilots commute to and from work in small GA aircraft for that very reason. Sadly, as Cpt. Sullenburger and others often point out. Many if not most professional pilots don't get to "fly" while on the job. Manually flying their aircraft is apparently too time and space wasteful to suit their employers and/or the FAA!:o:o
  16. After finding Jan is alive and well. Though apparently his PC isn't waterproof. I just started a new adventure. I am a huge fan of ORBX and have several of their buy-ware products. However I recently downloaded all their freeware airports I could find. Now I'm low and slowing through many of them. Of course that means I do have to often switch planes to suit conditions at that specific airport. See that's yet another adventure. I get to learn to fly the new plane as well!! ;) ADAM!! Please tell the folks at ORBX to keep the scenery coming!! Michael
  17. Talon is correct. I have at least a dozen saved flights based upon what aircraft or conditions I choose to fly at any given time. Each one is identified with the specific aircraft and other identifying info which I put my personalized settings into earlier. After starting the sim all you have is click on Load when the screen showing location and aircraft of your default flight comes up. Clicking on Load will provide a listing of all your saved flights. Select the saved flight for whatever aircraft you choose. That aircraft will then come up with your desired settings & also the location etc. from when you launched that flight from last. If you don't want to takeoff from the saved flight location or at the saved time or weather. Click on time, world, weather, etc. and set it for that flight before you start the flight. Doing this shouldn't affect your aircraft settings including whether or not you want to see shadows or reflections, use a 2d or 3d cockpit, etc. I even have flights based upon altitude and distance of the flight. For low and slow "sightseeing" I have the scenery details and traffic set full max. If I'm flying a long high haul in a tubeliner my scenery settings are set to default because at 30K' you can't see a lot of detail anyway. Why risk a OOM error because the CPU is trying to show cars, boats, etc. and give huge scenery detail you can't see at 30K' anyway. ;) Michael
  18. I agree! We're getting a lot of mileage for such a small investment!!;) If you like different flight challenges, go to the awards page and fly in and out of the highest, lowest, shortest, etc. airports. I first tried to do all of them using the same plane and realism set to realistic!!:eek: I was quickly reminded of the old country axiom, "Horses for Courses."
  19. Being primarily an old chopper guy in my RW life, low and slow is primarily how I enjoy simming as well. Last Fall we spent time in and around Vancouver and Victoria, BC. With a view out our hotel window of all the water landings at the Coal Harbor Seaplane Port, I decided to do some fixed wing seaplane work. I went online to Kenmore Air and downloaded their Air Route Maps, complete with routes as well as the Route's distance and est. time. Since I already had the relevant ORBX scenery for that area, I'm now flying the Kenmore Air routes in the default Kenmore float plane. Wonderful Scenery!!:cool:
  20. I can't say I have a standard setup. I use what suits that day on that machine. ;)
  21. The 4790 is a pretty good chip and can run at 4Ghz. which is faster than what a lot of people use. A SSD should definitely help your load times. But be aware, it probably won't be noticeably faster while actually flying. You mentioned it didn't look right. If this is your first stint with Nvidia go to their site on your computer and learn about it. There are a ton of things you can do with Nvidia. Which also means there are a ton of things that just aren't set to your desires. As to the tweaking. I really have had good luck just getting Nvidia right then doing a plug and play with FSX on several computers. I'd do that before tweaking the config. If you choose to try tweaking, there is a very highly recommended tweaking guide often mentioned on this forum. I can't remember the name off hand. But if I ever decide to tweak, I'll download that guide first and be truly careful reading the TWEAKING WARNINGS before I change a thing. ;)
  22. [quote= I have FSX:SE and Orbx (Global and Vector) and I don't see any real issues with appearance and flight. Of course I am only flying the Cessna 172 and Baron 58 right now as I just got into simulations. Hope this helps. Kerrycorcoran hit the nail on the head. You can run some scenery addons. Or you can run a few not terribly advanced aircraft. However you'll probably be terribly unhappy if you try to run much scenery and any advanced aircraft at the same time.;) HINT: Try to limit everything running in the background!! There are a lot of processes that may self-run without your knowledge. They take up time your CPU doesn't have to waste! CPU SPEED IS THE END ALL BE ALL OF FS!
  23. Hey Amtran618, I'm curious, how'd your approach in the screen shot turn out?
