  1. You'll find me quite laid back on this matter, and basically reactive. The less "rules" the better, the enjoyment is in the shared experience and camaraderie of the flights, I'll support what promotes that. People have proposed numerous flights and I'm sure can think of many others; whoever organizes a flight should have carte blanche to decide the route, the aircraft, etc. How often? Doesn't matter to me; if interested I'll participate. (Just finished my trip around England in an autogyro, now flying a DC-3 from Iqaluit to Ushuaia (predicting five fuel stops).) Promotion? Better to have a core of dedicated people than a herd of curiosity seekers. Truly interested folks will find us.

  8. Was going to use the SM1019 for this flight, but a shakedown flight reminded me what a miserable experience it is So went with my first thought of an ultralight, the Microleve ML400. A low level, average 3000ft, flight following waypoints from Columbus to Chicago. Departing Darby Dan airport, Columbus in the distance. The office, as I settle in for a long flight - 300 miles at a blistering 60kt average. Wonderful midwest scenery, fly anywhere for hundreds of miles and this is all you see Not sure what this is, but something to occupy my attention over Indiana. Clearance for KFWA, Fort Wayne; though I'm sure 3k ft wasn't their preference. Snow ahead, and me in an open cockpit. Getting colder than a sorceress' bosom in an alloy support garment. Porter County Municipal, KVPZ (that SM1019 at least had a heater) But I'm over half way Hobart Sky airport, my last waypoint And head north to Meigs There it is (default scenery, forgot to activate a newer one) On final, not an easy plane to land; between the ground effect of that big wing and a stall that merely manifests as an increased rate of descent you've got to nurse the throttle Smooth landing, half frozen and thinking I probably could have driven here as quickly Nice of that Piper to give me a parking spot Thought I would need a fuel stop along the way, but with a fuel burn of 2-3 gal/hr she only used 11 gallons for the 275 mile trip, about four hours.

  10. Great airplane. Put many miles on one though haven't flown it in a while (so many aircraft, so little time).

    Lol, I've spent an eternity trying to learn to correct rivers along the side of mountains, railroad tracks across runways, coastlines running out in the water, coastal cities half submerged, a dam in the middle of a field.... which is correct, the river or the buildings
  13. Fine with me. Being retired I have no schedule, no timetable, no bedtime, no alarm clock.

  15. Meigs is fine, though only about 300 miles from here. Perhaps a good excuse for an ultralight flight, or even an airship (my F-16 could be there in about half an hour, lol).
  16. Boring ... monotonous .... soporific We removed the wings from my Beech D17 and loaded her into a C-5. Flew at around 35k ft from Perth to Hawaii to Columbus. (No desire to follow my path from Columbus to Perth in reverse.)
  17. Only works if the engineer is also the company head. Otherwise they are looked on by those boardroom bumblers as glorified mechanics. (At the ripe old age of 25 I found myself VP of Engineering for Western Electric. Was quite proud of myself ...and came to loathe that job with a passion. Couldn't have been happier when my contract expired.) This has been true for ages. People have thought of many things where it was years, or even centuries, before the technology existed to implement those thoughts. Steam power was first demonstrated nearly 2000 years ago; it took 1800 years for someone to build a practical steam engine. The first submarine was demonstrated in the 1770s, 150 years later submarines were practical. With the geometric expansion of technology today we are bound to have some developments hitting the market before they are "ready for prime time". I've heard it said you must be the first, the best, or the cheapest, otherwise you're a footnote. On a personal note, some of my income is still from two proprietary patents; the circuits were developed back in the 1920s, I made them work in the 1970s.

  20. I would enable UT USA again, then remove a handful of files at a time until the OOM disappears. If it's not an interaction between UT and some other file, or between several UT files, you should be able to isolate the offending file; then either live without that file or, if it is corrupt, get a replacement.

  24. Purists would recoil in disgust at the AI in my FS world. Bleriot crosses the channel every week. A Do-X flies from Germany to Rio every week. WWI era fighters and scouts tool around farmstrips in the US and Europe. The Hindenburg makes a world cruise every two weeks. The Jupiter 2 takes off from a "hidden" base in New Mexico, slowly climbs to 40k ft, then takes off at Mach3 for another "hidden" base in Australia. A UFO departs "Area 51" and tours the world, making several stops before landing on a floating "platform" 30K ft above Antarctica. The Sighing Flub ...er, Flying Sub (from Voyage to See What's on the Bottom") flies from Bremerton to San Diego every day. What will I see next? Fireball XL-5? a Klingon battlecruiser? a WWI bomber putting me in a holding pattern while it spends a seeming hour landing at LAX? The schedules of all these are such that I can fly for days and never encounter any of them, so it's always a treat.
