  1. Pardon my ignorance, but I am not familiar with that screen. What sim are you flying? Dan
  2. I see Mr Zippy snuck in again with what I suspect is the equivalent of a flight sim butt dial. Hey Zip! I checked out your June endorsement of the Logitech joy stick and found it to be on sale at amazon for a ridiculously low price. So I bought it. It is terrific. Thanks for the heads up!
  3. Just an FYI along similar lines: 1. Had an internal spare drive disappearing/reappearing like that. Had an IT guy look at it. Finally failed completely. Just bought a new drive- all OK. Never thought to check/redo the internal connection. Thanks. 2. Had frequent crash to desktop or hangup-to-death running FSX on a separate drive. Ended up reinstalling it on my C: Drive (the OS drive). No problems since. Dan
  4. I have seen and been getting questions about jetway operation and "failures" at my airports. Seems like a common problem and I remember all the steps and learning curves for me in getting these to work. So here is a straightforward (I think) short tutorial on FSX working jetways. Feel free to add or subtract with your expertise. A Brief Tutorial and Troubleshooter for FSX Jetways There are 5 things necessary for a working jetway to show up and function in FSX: 1. The correct command has to be given when arriving at the gate. Default is CTRL+J. 2. A working Jetway has to be added to the specific gate by the developer using whatever airport design software he/she has chosen. The best/most common freeware program is Airport Design Editor (.bgl files in the FSX/Addon Scenery/Airport/scenery folder contain label ADE or ADEX) or various payware programs like AFX (.bgl file often contains AFX). 3. When designed, the developer has to set the image complexity window to a level that shows up on your computer. The jetways only show up if your FSX/Settings/Customize/ Scenery/ Scenery complexity slider is set AT or ABOVE the complexity entry the developer has set. For example, if the developer has set the scenery complexity of the jetways at NORMAL, the jetways show up if you set your slider at normal, dense, very dense, or any setting AT or ABOVE NORMAL. Because jetways in FSX require a LOT of computing space, they can interfere with frame rates and operations of FSX on lower end computers. So most developers set jetways at “Extremely Dense”. If your rig can handle it, set the complexity at extremely dense and jetways show up and work. If your rig can’t handle it, set your complexity slider lower and do without jetways. The troubleshooter below will give guidance on how to correct this. If the jetways are NOT THERE, it is one of the two situations above. 4. For the jetway to work, the aircraft HAS to be centered exactly on the parking spot. Usually, this is the center reference of the aircraft (the little red X crosshair seen on the aircraft when in top down view). Occasionally, it is the nose wheel. Not sure why. Only way I know to find out is experiment with moving the plane around in SLEW mode. A way to tell if centering is the problem: taxi into the parking spot. Look out the pilot side window at the jetway and hit CTRL+J. If the jetway doesn’t move, but shakes or quivers a little bit, then stops when you hit CTRL+J again, the problem is centering. Enter slew mode and move around slightly to find the best position for CTRL+J to activate the jetway. 5. Not common, but oft forgotten is that the aircraft you are using has to have a working exits code to trigger the jetway. This is coded in the aircraft.cfg file under [EXITS]. To determine if this is the issue, switch to the DEFAULT Boeing 737_800 aircraft, and test the jetway. If it works, the problem is exits coding. There are good tutorials to help code an aircraft. At Historic Jetliner Group (HJG) website, Tony Madge, in the forums, has good info on coding and long lists of good codes for many of the HJG aircraft. TROUBLESHOOTER for FSX Jetways: 1. Is the jetway THERE? If so, skip to STEP 4. 2. Is the jetway NOT THERE? If not: a. Open FSX. Click the SETTINGS button. Then click to Customize and Scenery. b. Set the Scenery Complexity slider to EXTREMELY DENSE. c. Jetways should now show up and work. d. Still no jetway? Go to step 3. 3. Using Airport Design Editor or another editor of your choice, open the .bgl file for the airport and see if that gate has any jetway assigned to it. If not, this airport was designed without jetways for a reason. If you don’t have software, you might contact the developer by email and ask. Or check photos of the airport online. 4. If the jetway is THERE, but doesn’t work: a. Enter the parking spot with your aircraft, change view to outside pilot’s window, and watch the jetway. Hit CTRL+J. If the jetway quivers or shakes, it is working but you are not in the correct exact parking spot. Use SLEW mode and top down view to find the correct spot. b. If no quivering or shaking AND slew doesn’t help it to work: (1) Check your setting/ control buttons and make sure for “Attach/Detach Jetways” the proper command is CTRL+J. (2) If no movement, or extremely slow movement, try the default Boeing 737-800 in the correct spot by loading FSX with the default aircraft at that gate. If the jetway works, the problem is exit coding for your aircraft. The forums can help troubleshoot that issue. Dan
  5. https://www.boeing.com/assets/pdf/commercial/airports/faqs/arcandapproachspeeds.pdf Tried to save a step by uploading the PDF itself. No joy. This lists Vref landing speeds for about all Boeing aircraft. The true Vref can be calculated from aircraft type, landing weight, flap setting, and other factors like runway condition, wind direction and wind speed, etc. I think.
  6. Not sure exactly what you are looking for. In general, in FSX, all traffic files (unless you put one elsewhere) are in the FSX/Scenery/World/ scenery folder labelled "Traffic_xxx_xxx.bgl". If your aircraft of concern are SAS flights, I don't think they are in the default traffic file, which only contain Microsoft fictional airlines. Look for a traffic file that could contain SAS flights, add .original to the bgl file (so it looks like Traffic_SAS (or whatever).bgl.original. This will turn off, but preserve, the file. Now check and see if the flights disappeared. If not, try that with each Traffic_.bgl file until you find the offender. If that doesn't work, and you have NO default FSX aircraft showing up, you probably have an FS9 traffic file somewhere. FS2004 (FS9) traffic files turn off FSX files and yet show their own. Go figure. In AI Flight Planner, click on Bulk Traffic at the top tool bar, then Find FS9 Traffic files. In the menu, check which drive your FSX is installed on, and then click Use Selected. The FS9 file will come up after a long search period. You can then eliminate it or convert it to FSX. Failing all that, there is some traffic file with SAS planes located in an active folder. You would have to search each FSX folder (especially AddOn Scenery/ scenery) to find it.
  7. Sticky Thread Sticky: Install Reinstall steps FSX boxed edition (Gold) Started by dlfrenchmd, 09-16-2021 04:18 PM The above sticky in FSX forum is what works for Windows 10. May want to try it in Windows 11. Dan
  8. I am still making FSX scenery and flying. New one soon: ELLX Luxembourg. Won't be trying MSFS anytime soon. I live in rural Kentucky. Very poor internet service. Dan French
  9. Military AI Works has a lot of freeware Air Bases in FSX and FS9. One of their Brize Norton offerings might fit your need.
  10. Thanks all! Please note some, but not all, are seeing a texture reversal on the playing surface of Lambeau Field. Please comment here or email me if you are having trouble. If my "fix" for you works, I may need to upload it. Thanks!
  11. Try the steps outlined in the sticky "FSX Install Reinstall....." on the FSX forum. LOTS of hoops to jump thru, but it works. Dan
  12. Thanks, Loki I recall 2 articles, one in Flying Magazine, the other I think was in Smithsonian Air and Space. I don't have specific references. Sorry. I think they were around the time MSFS 2020 came out. They definitely implied, as I recall, a desktop sim for aviators was the eventual goal. I hope you are right. The cynicism concerning an underhanded ploy is ALL mine, I'm afraid! Listen not to old Luddites!
  13. Pardon the reply, if I'm off base, but I am an unfortunate cynic and suspect the situation is expected on Microsoft's part. From my readings in other sites and journals, this iteration of Flight Simulator is not really intended for gaming or individual customers. Rather the eventual intent is a first class desktop/ laptop flight simulator program for private and commercial pilots that will greatly reduce the need for high level "simulator time" at Redbird or one of the other pilot training schools. The cost savings for airlines and private pilots will be enormous. The genius in this is, "How do you develop this in a beta format, test it, iron out all the bugs over a few years, at a much reduced cost?" Answer: the ready-made flight sim community which has been clamoring for a new sim for years. I think it a stroke of developer genius to beta test software and have the testers pay for the privilege, reducing overall developer costs. I suspect all these issues with MSFS 2020 will be resolved eventually as the final product for the aviation community takes form. When the sim is online for commercial and general aviation, expect a high class, efficient flight simulator that will be so good, it is FAA approved for training. (There will always be glitches 'cause it's Microsoft, after all.) When this is finalized expect a great experience and a HUGE increase in the cost. Thanks, sim community, for paying us to get this going! Dan French
  14. Recently hard drive crashed and it took me days to gather all the info and about 7 reinstalls to finally find a method that works. This works for me now twice-no problem. It is for FSX plus Acceleration Gold boxed edition. May tweak for others. FSX REINSTALLATION of Gold Edition out of the box with Product Keys. 1. CLEAN UNINSTALL FSX. a. UNINSTALL Acceleration from the Apps/uninstall on computer b. UNINSTALL FSX from computer apps or from the disc 1. c. CLOSE/REOPEN Program Uninstall and make sure all FSX components are gone. d. Go to C:\Program Files (86x)\Microsoft Games\ Microsoft Flight Simulator and delete this folder or whatever drive you had it on. e. Go to C:\Users\YOUR NAME and delete any fsx material. OF COURSE SAVE in another folder all FSX stuff you want to put back in later! BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REINSTALL FSX: 2. Reset the license key (Cause of Error 1603) a. Make sure MSKB928080 is installed to C: drive root folder. You can download it from the web (but not Microsoft of course) b. Run the following as administrator b. 15. I posted on an older thread recently, but will start a new thread in a few moments: a step by step approach to installing/ reinstalling FSX. It is lengthy and troublesome, but works every time for me now. Boxed addition only. Will put under FSX forum. Dan
  16. 2 cents worth: every time something like this has happened to me it is a stray FS9 Traffic file somewhere unexpected in the FSX folder. I would reboot computer and let AIFP analyze every area on my hard drive, especially the FSX folder in its entirety. Last time I lost all traffic, but only within a 100 mile radius of Atlanta. Weird. But I found a stray FS9 file, converted it, and all OK. Also, make sure you remove all the converted FS9 files. If both FSX new files and old FS9 files are there, traffic won't show.
  17. Recent crash and burn of my Windows 10 required a disc format and reinstall of Windows 10. Working fine, even got FSX installed and working well (see another thread for the details). In reinstalling Ultimate Crew 2014 from a purchased disc, the install works fine. (Firewall and antivirus OFF). I enter email and License Key and get "Internet Connection Required" window. (Internet on). Can't locate the FSPS website anymore, nor any support. Thoughts, anyone? Thanks!
  18. Great place to start. I, too have learned a lot over my starting in FS98. I have grown to make and upload my own scenery in modern and classic flying, and enjoy success with DC-8's and 747's. It is a great hobby. Welcome!!
  19. There are a number of people who make FS2004 freeware airports which often require an AFCAD change from the old default. It is usually people like you who are interested in that particular airport. Part of our hobby's fun is trying new things. You may want to try a new AFCAD yourself. There is a learning curve, but it is a lot of fun. Things you will use: Airport Design Editor (after installation do the FS9 version. This is free from https://www.scruffyducksoftware.com. It will help you open the default airport which you will modify and save (If LTFM is a completely new airport, ADE has a good tutorial on building an airport from scratch.) Also needed is an aerial/satellite photo like from Google Earth to accurately place and position things. Also needed is an Airport Diagram. US airports are easy: the FAA has free copies on line. For Turkey, not so sure. This helps label runways and taxiways correctly and size them properly. All in all it is fun, but a lot of people just aren't interested in that kind of work. Often big works isn't free, If new LTFM is a big airport, I bet someone will publish it soon for a price.
  20. I had planned to get this cleaned up first before uploading a thread, BUT the time to try to be helpful seems now. I have just reinstalled FSX from the boxed Gold Edition (FSX plus Acceleration). It is difficult and time consuming, but following this guideline, it is flying perfectly. CAVEAT: I have not reloaded 3rd party software yet, so there may be monsters there. But a basic, default FSX is running fine, now. So here is a step by step guide that I hope proves useful. As I say, it is a “beta version”, so I will try to answer questions. I failed on 4 or 5 installs before putting this together. FSX REINSTALLATION of Gold Edition out of the box with Product Keys. 1. FIRST, CLEAN UNINSTALL FSX. a. UNINSTALL Acceleration from the Apps/uninstall on computer b. UNINSTALL FSX from SYSTEMS computer app or from the disc 1. c. CLOSE/REOPEN Program Uninstall on your computer and make sure all FSX components are gone. d. Go to C:\Program Files (86x)\Microsoft Games\ Microsoft Flight Simulator and delete this folder (or whatever drive you had the main folder on). e. Go to C:\Users\YOUR NAME and delete any fsx material. It may be in subfolders. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REINSTALL FSX: 2. Reset the license key (Cause of Error 1603) a. Download MSKB928080 from https://web.archive.org/web/20070312190317/http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/c/d/1cd508f9-7520-4659-a122-a26e8804e884/mskb928080.exe or some other source. This worked for me- clean, no viruses. b. Install MSKB928080 by accepting agreement and unzip to your main OS drive (C:\ drive in my case) b. Open “Command prompt” by typing “Command Prompt” (No quotation marks. From here on out, I use quote marks just to let you know what exactly to type in. DON’T type them in unless stated.) A dialogue window pops up. Highlighted is Command Prompt. On right of the window, click “Run As Administrator”. c. In the new, black cmd prompt window, at the blinking cursor, type “cd C:\ “then hit enter. If your OS drive had a different letter from mine, choose that. d. At cursor, type “cd MicrosoftKB928080” and hit enter e. At cursor, type “resetsldl -All “ and hit enter. NOTE: there is a space between ldl and –(the dash) and ALL is capitalized. You should get a message for success in the token store reset. Close command prompt. 3. Reset Windows Installer (Cause of Error 1722) a. In the ‘Type here to search box’ in screen’s left lower corner, type “Run” and hit Enter. In run box, type “Services.msc” (without quotes) and press Enter. b. Find in list and Double-click on Windows Installer. c. In the new window, set the Startup type of Windows Installer to Manual. d. Click “Start” .Note down the error message if any. Click OK. I never had an error message. 4. Install FSX to a main drive (a NEW folder completely). Create the new folder. DON"T install to Program x86 folder. Place Disc 1 in CD drive and open\run the setup as Administrator After Disc 2 complete, start FSX. I initiated the default flight to make sure it worked. Along in here somewhere, you get to enter the FSX product key. Do so online and let it register you. 5. Close FSX and REBOOT computer. VERY IMPORTANT. 6. Go to FSX folder you just installed, right click Properties/ security and allow all permissions. I included the "Users" category for full control also. 7. REBOOT computer 8. Do RUN\Services.msc\Windows Installer\ Start again (as step 3 above) 9. Install FSX Acceleration. It already contains SP1 and SP2 so don't have to download/ install those 10. Start FSX 11. ERROR CODE 1-80004005 may come up on starting FSX. Hitting “Yes to online query” or just letting it run allows you to fly, but only gives you the trial version. 21. I had the same problem in "reverse". ATC etc OK but no engine sound in cockpit. Switching from surround sound to stereo fixed it.
  22. FYI, got the book and read through it. Very worthwhile purchase. The prose is good overview of Braniff's history and the photos are to die for. I like supplementing the photos of real aircraft with flight simulator repaints to get the entire fleet.
  23. There's lots of options, obviously. It depends on your computer setup and networking capability. My computer is fairly good, but my internet connection is lousy to nonexistent. So I haven't found Steam, P3D, or the new MSFS2020 a really good option for me. So in your shoes, I'd load up the ole FSX again and take advantage (when I can) of all the great planes and even hangars available in the library on this site. I ave some VERY busy airports using the free scenery packages and the AI traffic available on this and other free sites. I've made it a game to see how much I can do and spend no money. So yep, I still keyboard fly! But with FSX and FlightSim, AVSIM, and other sites, it's amazing what you can do and have fun. Example: I've been designing and uploading scenery packs for years and just discovered you can design approaches in ADE that show up in ATC! silly, I know, but hey! Seems I'm still discovering new things about FSX after all this time. Doesn't mean I won't go for FS2020 if I ever get reliable internet out here in the boonies.
