  2. Even with ONE Wright-1820 spitting out 1475HP, landing on the Lexington was one of the most thrilling and scariest moments of my life.

  3. Absolutely. I would hope that the majority of these posts will be aimed at enhancing everyone's ability to competently fly helicopters in the PC sim world, and to understand the marked differences between RW and FW sim flying. Take it low and slow. Be patient and don't get frustrated. Practice, practice, practice. The best part of helicopter flying is the view. You can take time to stop and smell the roses.

  4. I'm flying FSX these days (and wishing I'd still got FS9 I must admit.............) and I can tweak the brake's effectiveness. I was too darn busy figuring out how to stop falling off the stern of the ship to check that them wheels were still rotating or not. I'll get on and sort those brakes so it doesn't happen again, after all I may come across all sorts of carriers than need landing on any day of the week.............

  5. It's related to the MSFS disc set available in some regions. The licence validation isn't working somewhere, and the sim seems to fall back to looking for a disc. Not very a very clear error message.

  6. Yep! Life wouldn't be nearly as worthwhile without a few good moments and great sounds like that to remember!! Michael

  7. That’s fine, my lips are sealed. Lol. as was stated, whatever makes a flight sim user happy is all that matters. I got a buddy of mine who only swears by X Plane. He won’t ever touch Microsoft ever. that’s all good.

  8. I'm not quite sure that 'full power' is something that equates with only a couple of Gypsy Queens to provide the 'power'. It felt decidedly dodgy sliding backwards with the brakes full on! This morning I dropped the wind speed by 10 kts for take-off and it worked a treat. PIREP in the morning.

  9. Earlier today I reread some of the threads when MS went from FS9 to FSX. We almost could copy and paste the discussion between then and now. What I found most interesting was that on a whole those threads came to the same conclusions, 1) we all have our preference and will defend our selection, and 2) as long as we are having fun there is a place in the sim world for all of us and our preferred sim.

  10. Finally found and caught up with this thread. My comments: 1. This is a very good thread, and thanks all for the tutorials on how to fly a chopper. For me, it is a totally unknown art. So have learnt heaps already from reading what's been posted so far. (Whilst for awhile I won't be active in the sim, is broken, but I do and can enjoy reading stuff.) 2. Posts that might upset people, especially historical references (textual, graphical etc.). All comments so far about this in this thread are valid in my opinion. I think the main thing guys, as has been said, is to think twice before posting something, and to preface something with a warning, as has been done, and finally, not get into a 'flame war' about any of it. If someone objects, take it on the chin, don't try and justify, and move on. The thread theme is the main thing, i.e. helicopters, RW and sim. 3. Re 'Air Crash Investigations'. I also think I've seen all episodes. As a 'systems man', i.e. computer systems (IT degree) and in my working life, the episodes are very educational about when something goes wrong. Indeed, per standard systems knowledge, it generally isn't a single, catastrophic failure of something, but mostly a series of little errors, mistakes, failures, physical breakages, that each by itself wouldn't have caused the crash, but the sequence and series of them, all stacking up, lead to the crash. I don't like the episodes where people die in the crash, I prefer the episodes where everyone survives. But I do still watch all. That is reality, it happened. The important thing is how can that type of event be prevented from happening again. (For a modern set of examples, the Boeing Max aircraft, and what has possibly deteorated in that company's corporate mindset, leading to their quality assurance and safety systems programmes, is disturbing. Re this, I've just done a Google search for an update on the 787 Dreamliner flight Mon 11 March 2024 from Sydney to Auckland that had a massive drop in altitude. It was on our TV news, but nothing heard since. Here's the latest. (Don't reply to this item, as this thread is about helicopters). https://www.voanews.com/a/black-boxes-seized-after-technical-failure-on-boeing-made-latam-plane-/7523986.html " 'Black swan event' Passenger Brian Jokat said he spoke to one of the pilots after the plane touched down. "I asked him 'what happened?' and he said to me 'I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden'," the passenger told national broadcaster Radio New Zealand." 14. Very broadly speaking, I think these types of threads get split down two sides: 1) Those who found it worthwhile to adapt to the new sim, or have never used the older versions, 2) Those who didn't find it worthwhile to adapt (for their own good reasons - no judgement implied). All I can say is that if you're able to embrance the changes in MSFS2020, it will reward you. And it will (hopefully) only get better with '24. But I'm sympathetic to folks that enjoy what they have, don't need to learn a very different sim, and don't need to buy new hardware. Nothing will ever be everything to everyone, so it was inevitable that these two camps would exist.

  16. With my current hardware setup I enjoy a wonderful (for ME) flight sim experience with MSFS2020. The best ever for Microsoft IMHO. I'm a happily retired 75 yr old and have been with MS Flight since day one back in the 80's. I too am anxiously awaiting MSFS2024 and will purchase it without hesitation. I continue to be mildly amused by 1st time posters whose sole purpose seems to be bashing this sim. Kinda like joining a Popeye's Chicken fan forum to rave about hamburgers. It is to laugh.
