Helicopter Buffs

Recommended Posts

While I was looking through some of my old FSX aircraft file downloads the other day and noticed one that I didn't remember ever installing. The H&S Design EC135/635 Eurocopter.  I'm not the greatest when it comes to Helicopters in FSX, but I thought I would install it and try it out. After installing it I read the pdf manual, which is a must because you have to follow the startup and shutdown steps exactly.

Once I got it started I increased the throttle (collective) on my flight stick and got it to hover. It's really stable in a hover, much more than any of the other helicopters I've tried in FSX. I pushed forward on the stick and started accelerating and climbing. You just have to use a little rudder to keep it flying straight ahead. Boy what a stable sweet flying bird. There are several different models and configurations to choose from with glass and steam gauge panels. I tried out the Life Flight with the half glass panel.

After flying around for a while I decided to try a landing, which is where I definitely don't shine. I slowed to about 40 kts and started my decent back to the airport. You really have to lower the throttle and pull back on the stick to slow down, but it's smooth and not jerky. Once you get to the speed you want just increase throttle and push forward on the stick to maintain your speed and altitude. Just lower the throttle to start your descent. I didn't land on the exact spot on the tarmac, but it was a smooth landing. Better than any I have made before, and it was the first time with the Eurocopter. After flying around for a while and practicing my landings I can now land exactly where I want. I did have a few rough landings and you can tell because of the sparks from the skids. I also had a landing where the tail rotor smacked the ground, and the helicopter immediately shuts down, warning lights flash, and warning horns blare.  You can't restart the helicopter until you reload the flight.

I am definitely hooked on this helicopter now. I've already logged over 25 hours flying it. I can't remember what FS site I downloaded it from, but I recommend it to any of you chopper buffs out there. I'm sure a quick Goggle search would find a site where you could download it. I attached the manual with all the info.

I agree, even as a Bell lover, this is a good helicopter.

Thx. However, the link to AvSim in the initial post does work. Either way, its a good craft.

For those into 'rotary porn', the annual HAI Heli-Expo concluded a few days ago in Anaheim...

Me too. I downloaded a lot of great helicopters from their site, and I haven't been able to find them anywhere.

I just used the Wayback Machine and downloaded a helo from Hovercontrol from 2017.  Don't know how trustworthy the download is!

aw man, only an hour away from me

Lived in Mission Viejo and Irvine in the '80s.

Had the dubious privilege of making a precautionary landing with a CH-46 on Newport Beach. Had a collective bind up, and wouldn't move, so landed and waited for maintenance to drive over. We had a mini heli-fest when the Orange County Sheriff's Hughes 300 landed next to us to see if he could help.

Yup, rotor-heads unite!

Did you ever figure out how to use the autopilot?

So far, the AP switches do toggle, with lights or EFIS indications, but have not gotten them to control the AC.

When I figure this out, I'll post it here.

Thanks, I've tried the HAP autopilot on the default Bell 206 with mixed results. It would be great if the Eurocopter AP actually worked.

Imagine trying this on one of Zhyhulskiy's helicopters, with the entire cockpit in Cyrillic.

Well mrzippy you did it now! You posted that Wayback Link to the HC website, and now I'm mad scrolling through the place trying to D/L anything I can get my hands on! 😁

Was only able to D/L one choppa... the Devins Bell 230. Other links don't work. 😐 Looking for Scenery/Utilities...

This 'Autopilot' thing... aren't we Rotorheads here because we're yearning for hand flying without Automation? At least you FSXer's have a 'trim' Gauge! 😋

Yes, I was very careless. My apologies, Zip! I'll make the appropriate correction to my original post.

Thanks Larry for pointing out my obvious error.

Thanks Charlie. Perhaps I should have made it a capital L when I created that screen name, since so many seem to see it as a capital I rather than the lowercase l, but after 25+ years I've long since gotten used to it. But typefaces in use are as much to blame as anything.

Currently dealing with this with the IL-18.

I'm slowly translating the users manual (thank heaven for Google Translate) so that it will be in English with step by step direction to use the Cyrillic gauges and labeling.

The fun never stops!

I so agree, however, it's driving me mad to not know every system in the aircraft, even if I won't use it.
