Strange slew problem

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've been using an "aircraft" in the form of crosshairs for accurately positioning FS2004 scenery objects for years, mostly via the EZ object positioning program and of cause, also via the old faithful, RWY12 program.

Being able to slew correctly via the "Y" key is thereby very important ...... BUT ...... directly after pressing this key, my crosshairs "aircraft" begins spinning to the right, faster and faster and which can then continue indefinately, even after having slewed upwards, sideways, turning, etc. It's not only my crosshairs with this problem but it's the same for ALL my flyable aircraft, even the "heavy" B-747s. A commical sight yes but ........

I've gone through my FS9.cfg file a number of times but cannot find anything which could be related to my problem, but even after replacing the whole file with my oldest backup (8 years old) the problem persists. Deleting this file and letting FS9 generate a new one does not cure my problem either.

Slewing upwards does not go straight up but at an angle of about 5 degrees from vertical and after pressing the F1 key to bring the "aircraft" back down, it descends as expected but then disappears underground, only to re-appear correctly after pressing the "Y" key again but now with spark and dust effects as though it has made a rough landing.

Because I now began suspecting the assignments/sensitivities of my Flight yolk, Throttel quandrant and Rudder peddals I went through those a number of times as well but to no avail.

Does anyone recognise any of this and is able to at least point my nose in the right direction ?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hans

It sounds as if you have some amount of rudder input, perhaps from a pedal not quite centered. I've seen that in the past and it always involved something generating rudder "deflection."

What is the filename for that?  I used it for ages but lost mine and cannot decipher what keywords would enable search to find it.

Hey Guys,

I've been in a hospital during the last week, recovering from some complications resulting from an aorta valve replacement in my heart but will be going home again in a few days time. So, sorry for not being able to react quickly to any of your reactions.

hgschnell,

I will certainly try your method of de-activating my three steering hardwares during slew activities. Didn't even know or realize that this was at all possible, evan although I had already suspected one of these hardwares myself. However, I must add that my slew problems had quite unexpectedly turned up at some time in the past but how and why remains a mystery.

Anyway, you're never to old to learn.

Thanks from my hospital bed.

Hans

hgschnell,

Your "LOCKED=1" in your FS9.cfg file sounded so good but the only thing such entries seem to do in my FS9.cfg, is to remove each whole SLEW section after a following re-start. However, even then, my weird slew functions remain operational, as though they get their bad settings from somewhere else.

Do you have any idea where this could be or where FS9 gets it's default steering hardware settings from.

Thanks for your best wishes and I seem to have survived the ordeal in one piece.

Regards

Hans

A general question,

My Win7 is the 64 bit version while FS9 is 32 bit. No problem so far but when it concernes e.g. drivers for my three steering hardwares, which drivers should be downloaded/installed ? 64 bit or 32 bit versions ?

I still think it's not a config problem. Did you ever confirm that you have no hardware generating a yaw signal? A rudder input (that's what causes the spinning) can and will do exactly that, and I think chasing config is barking up the wrong tree, unless you have pretty much guaranteed that nothing is generating a slight yaw input. As I said in an above post:

It doesn't take much input so you might disconnect all of your flight controls, then if it still spins, try the arrow keys for yaw control to see if that will correct the spin.

With a 64 bit operating system you need the 64 bit drivers. An application being 32 bit has nothing to do with 64 bit drivers.

Sorry I have nothing to contribute to your problem but I read you’re in hospital and wanted to wish you a get well soon. All the best.

Can I have a look to your fs9,cfg?

Otherwise no idea...

hgschnell,

Attached is my now active FS9.cfg file for you to please take a look at. It concernes three steering hardwares but I have renamed the "cfg" part to "txt" but only because cfg files are evidently not allowed as posting attachments.

1. Saitek (Logitech) Pro Flight Yolk System. Actively used for slewing.

2. Saitek (Logitech) throttle quadrant. Not usefull or necessary for slewing.

3. Saitek (Logitech) Rudder Peddals. Not usefull or necesary for slewing.

4. (Standard keyboard). Actively (also) used for slewing.

The top "Joystick Main" in the attached FS9.txt listing is for my Rudder Peddals (3), which includes two toe brakes and the rudder. Works correctly for normal flight.

The second "Joystick Main" is for my yolk (1), which also has a number of programmed buttons. Works correctly for normal flight and for slewing. Includes the related "Joystick Slew" section.

The last "Joystick Main" is for my throttle quadrant, which also has a number of programmed buttons. Works correctly for normal flight.

I have purposely deleted all slew entries for the above 2 and 3 but have experienced a number of times that the slew entries of 3, can suddenly re-appear without my input ????? In relation to this I have also deleted all rudder peddals related "slewing assignments".

Anyway, I certainly hope you can find something in the attached FS9.txt file, which could be the potential cause of my problems.

Regards and thanks for any trouble taken.

Hi Hans.

in your FS9,cfg there should not be anything in the "Joystick_Slew" Chapters besides "locked=yes".

hgschnell,

Thanks a million for your lesson.

Slewing around without spinning crosshairs now works fine again, although I will need to get used to the slew function now only working via my keyboard and no longer via my yolk .... and ..... my keyboard.

In all my simming years I've never manually touched the FS9.cfg file but it now seems that some types of (bad) automatic edits have somehow creeped in at some times in the past.

However, after having messed around with this file for so long and especially after your strongly valued help, I was now finally able to straighten my slew issue out. Not only that but I've now also gained valuable knowledge about how FS9 gets itself set up for action after startup.

Thanks again.

Hans

hgschnell,

Now that I've found out how this FS9.cfg file actually works, I've even been able to add my yolk's 2D slew function to those of my keys again. Great !!

I now believe that my initial spinning problem was caused by one or more of my hardware "joystick" assignments conflicting with their slew functions, most probably caused by one or more of those unexpected automatic "changes" long ago.

Thanks again for your help.

Hans
