RTW Retro Flight #119 London to Brussels . . . . 1961

Malév flight MA348 is an Ilyushin IL-18D on the first leg of a flight from London Heathrow to Budapest via Brussels Zaventem (EGLL - EBBR). We have 1,200 gallons of fuel on board for the 190 nm flight. We will have moderate cloud cover for the entire flight. Our cruising altitude will be 8,000 feet.

3. Heathrow ground control sends us out to runway 9R for departure.

4. Takeoff. We have positive rate of climb and are retracting the gear.

5. Climbing through 1,800 feet and turning on course for the North Sea and the Belgian coast.

6. Fifteen miles southeast from London at 7,000 feet near the bottom of the cloud layer.

7. Cruising at 8,000 feet near Gravesend we see the Thames River and the North Sea ahead.

8. Having left the southeast coast of England behind we are about halfway across the North Sea cruising at 225 knots.

9. Nearing the Belgian coast we begin to see more shipping.

10. Making landfall at the Belgian coast with the sandy beaches and airport of Ostend off our left wing.

11. We are over West Flanders with the municipality of Torhout off the right wing.

12. Thirty nm from Brussels over East Flanders the city of Ghent is off our left wing partially obscured by clouds. We see the Scheldt River just ahead and above the aircraft’s nose.

13. Beginning our initial descent with the city of Aalst just ahead and to the right.

14. Having been routed south of Brussels we now turn to the northeast.

15. Holding at 2,000 feet about 15 nm southwest of the airport.

16. With Zaventem airport in sight we turn to intercept runway 02.

17. About two and a half nm out we are lined up with gear down and flaps full.

18. Touchdown.

19. Taxiing to parking at the terminal.

20. Parked, all systems shut down and passengers disembarked while the aircraft is being serviced for the onward flight to Budapest. Thanks for flying Malév.
