  1. After seeing those photos I guess all he took out was the stick and pedals (although the rods that the pedals would attach to were still there). Maybe it just seemed "gutted" because I'm used to seeing the C172/182. Thanks for the heads up on that Stearman PT-13A! That's from Flyaway, right? So, stick and pedals only, huh? No flaps, no yoke. This should be a hoot! I'm gonna give it a go today (between football games. :D ).
  2. No stick time, unfortunately. He had the front seat pretty much gutted except for the gauges. He asked me about the aerobatics and I politely declined, which I now regret. I didn't know how I was going to react to being in a small aircraft (and not sitting at my desk in the stability of my home :D ) so I didn't want to get myself into something I couldn't get out of. But there's always next time. And there will definitely be a next time! And thanks for the heads up on the freeware. I'm off to check it out right now!
  3. I'll bet you're right. LOL. It's never really bothered me. I started losing my hair in high school and it's just what it is. Same thing with my age. Friends and family are making big deal out of me turning 60. "Does it bother you turning 60?" "How are you handling the "Big 6-0'?" And I'm like, it's just another day, really. :D I think I've found my birthday present to myself, however. Golden Age Simulations has a Stearman. I don't know much about the company, but it looks legit. I may have to learn to fly this taildragger.
  4. That was the absolute best thing ever! That's the pilot, Jordan, his assistant and wife, Candace, and the guy in the middle with the goofy smile is me.
  5. (I want to share this but I'm not sure where to put it.) My wife and step-son gave me a pretty cool birthday gift (I'll be 60 on Monday). The smallest aircraft I've been in up to this point in my life is a 20 seater Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia commuter plane. I'm really pretty excited! :D
  6. There are several ways of doing this. There's RemoteFlight Cockpit HD, which is an iPad app available in the App store (sounds like that's what you were after). This allows you a six-pack of instruments that connect via network to P3D. There are quite a large number of gauges you can use with it. This works really well to display your basic gauges. What I do is run an app called Duet Display. When connected to your computer via USB, it turns your iPad into an additional monitor, just as if you had another monitor plugged into the computer's GPU. With this set up, any window can be dragged over to the iPad. Running Air Manager, you could drag your entire console over to your iPad, although with all those gauges they might be too small to see. What I've done is undock my GPS from my P3D aircraft and I have it displayed full screen on my iPad. Running Duet Display as Administrator allows the touch functionality to work also. So I set my GPS as if I were using its buttons.
  7. Yeah, the CPU temp definitely has me concerned. The computer came with a water cooled system, but obviously it could be better. Now, just getting the temp down has taken precedence over the OC. I was going to delid the thing until I remembered it was water cooled. I think I may try and keep the side off and maybe even a small fan blowing into the case.
  8. Thanks for the additional info, guys. I really appreciate it! I watched the video you linked to, Scott, and several others on delidding. I have to say, and I'm not exactly sure why, that I'm really excited at the prospect of delidding my 8700K. And not even because of the possible overclocking, but just because this CPU does run hot. I'll be heading on over to amazon after this to get the stuff. :D This has been a very educational thread so far.
  9. Hi Scott, I didn't know that about the 7700K and 8700K. I'll be researching that this afternoon! Yeah, 90C is definitely hot. If that was idle temp or if it stayed that high I would have to do something about it. Your opinion of overclocking is something I've seen a lot of... "You've paid the money, now get the most out of it." And this computer was pretty pricey so I certainly see that opinion as valid. It's a prebuilt computer and has liquid cooling already, but maybe it can be better. Next step: Research the "delid" process. Thanks!
  10. Hi johnost. Thanks for the reply. I have tried to keep an eye on temps. It seems like the CPU takes the biggest hit and will peak at around 90 degrees ©. But never longer than a few seconds before coming back down. I think before I go any further I better get a more definitive answer on temps. I might discover with all I'm throwing at the thing it might be a good idea to underclock a little bit. I guess what I'd be looking for would be an improvement in more detailed areas like large airports or during rain, especially. In those situations my fps can drop to miserables levels - 10fps, 15 fps. I've tried ditching the 2 side monitors (which really improves fps :D). But I've been flying with them for so long the experience really lacks something without them. I've also thought about offing the Air Manager to a second (oldish) computer, but I don't think that would really gain much. So my next thought was overclocking. (Plus, I've never done that before and kind of want to see what it's all about (I'm thinking of building my next computer and this seems like a good first learning step.) I appreciate your post, it's given me more to consider. Of course, overclocking doesn't have to be permanent, so maybe I do it, see what I get, then make a decision from there. Thanks again, johnost!
  11. Unfortunately (or fortunately? :D ) it looks like Orbx or P3D are trying to ruin the fun. I'll kill the Orbx files and look again.
  12. I've read some threads about overclocking (many of them are years old so maybe not relevant), and have learned a little bit here and elsewhere. But I'm curious if you all here believe overclocking a CPU/GPU is worth it on a flight sim computer? It would seem to me that the several additional fps you might gain from the OC might not be worth it, worth the possible risk to your hardware. I mean the difference between 30 and 35 fps is really negligible, right? Or is it a case of squeeze as much as you can out of your hardware - one extra frame, two extra frames - whatever you can get. I'm not afraid to do that if the benefit is substantial, but I'll need to learn a little more before then. I think I'm really pushing my rig the way it is... it's running 3x32" monitors (external views), 1x20" monitor (instruments via Air Manager), 1 iPad (G1000 MFD in an undocked window), P3Dv4.5, plenty of Orbx scenery, and Active Sky. In a non cluttered, non urban area I can get between 25 and 30 fps on medium to high settings. Here are my computer specs. If you were me would you bother trying to overclock or should I just be happy that I haven't yet burned the house down? HP Omen pre built: 8th Gen i7 8700K @3.7GHz GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 16 Gb DDR4-2400 SDRAM The motherboard is an HP 8307 (whatever that is)
  13. The conversation in this thread cracked me up. :D I'm gonna check out Jarrett Airport in P3D. I kind of hope it's like this so I can give it a go.
  14. According to their pricing plans you can get 5Gb of storage on OneDrive free and 100Gb for only $1.99/month. Even the $1.99/month is a lot less than what you're paying now.
  15. Well, crap! I missed parts 3 - 6. Be back later. :D
  16. I've read quite a bit of that. The two definitely don't always play nice together. There's something to be said about flying without 3rd party scenery... better fps, faster start up, fewer compatibility issues, etc. Not as pretty to be sure, but if it's about the flying, and learning to fly, maybe it's worth the trade off. I may end up giving that a try. I miss the flying part of this whole thing. I haven't done much in the past several days. Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions and support!
  17. This is great! Looking forward to more. (Did anyone every take you into town? :D )
  18. I knew I was right about an SSD fixing the problem! The sim just needed that faster SSD to read the scenery files from. Right? Wrong. Turns out mallcott was correct and I, very much, was not. After about $130.00, a fresh install of Windows 10, a fresh install of P3Dv4, and a fresh install of Orbx scenery, that pause is in exactly the same place and just as long and irritating as it was before. (I will say the sim loads much much faster, but not fast enough to be worth the $$$ and time.) :: I do, however, believe I have found the culprit. I believe the problem lies in the Orbx Southern California region. I was scouring the Internets again this morning and that seemed to be the consensus in a thread over on the other forum. So I uninstalled the SoCal region and flew the route without even the slightest hiccup. I'm not ready yet to say viola! But I am encouraged. It's too bad, though. The scenery isn't nearly as nice. But I'll take the drab over the screen freeze any day of the week.
  19. Since this has evolved into printer/ink... I've heard many times that it's the ink that makes the money not the sale of the printers. So it makes sense that they would do everything in their power to encourage you to buy their brand. As far as WU... I hate them I hate them I hate them. Except for security updates, which is an ever evolving danger, if it ain't broke, etc., etc.
  20. What a great story, caldrail! Thanks for that.
  21. I started in October of last year. But I took several months off not too long ago. I'm currently at KTWM in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
  22. I'm very new to all this, so if my suggestion is extremely noob-esque, I apologize. Wouldn't hitting + E set everything in the aircraft where it should be in order to start the engine, then automatically start it? I think it does, and that would tell you if the engine is manually startable and you just don't have something correctly set. I sometimes have trouble starting my single prop aircraft. When this happens and I just want to fly, I'll hit + E just so I can get going.
  23. The panel work is way awesome... just the fact that you can do that. I would think a good set of goggles and warm clothing will fix the missing windows problem. :D
