  1. No. I upgraded last fall, i7-9700K, RTX 2070, 32GB G. Skill 3000 cl15, well vented Corsair case, 500GB SSD and 1TB M.2. It isn't quite perfect for new sim, but will probably do quite nicely. I get ~59 fps (refresh rate) at 1980x1200 on X-Plane 11.41 in the wide open spaces I usually fly. That would drop a bit if i fly into Paris or Chicago, but i don't spend a lot of time in the big airports. I have great sound with a Fosi amp driving Elac speakers, or an outboard dac and headphone amp.
  2. A King Air in Salina, Kansas, having connected with a a helicopter pickup. A B-26 on the way to KFMZ from KOLU. X-Plane does a much better job out of the box on Great Plains farmland.
  3. Tim, while I agree VR is probably only a niche market at this point, unless society does something stupid, down the road a few years, technology will circumvent the problems you note. I say this from my experience with the PC. Back in late 1982, I got my first PC, an 80286-10 machine, with a 24 MB hard disk. Most folks at the company where I worked went with the 8088 PC and a 10 MB hard disk. I was told I would never use all that 24 MB disk space. We had a program that took almost 55 minutes to run on an 8088 PC. My 80286 ran the same program in under 12 minutes. Eventually, I got an 80486-66 PC that would run the same program in a few seconds. I now have an I7-9700K with 1.5 TB of solid state storage, and an RTX 2070. Technology doesn't just advance, it is almost exponential. Someday, I envision a VR device that is the weight of a pair of glasses, and that can be worn comfortably. We are not there now, but it may be possible in 3-4 years??
  4. I have also been running FS2002 on Windows 10 without issues. I have it on a secondary drive (M.2), not my boot drive. With everything maxed, it doesn't even change the fan speed.
  5. One of the great things about simulators, is that they allow folks with different interests to pursue them in the way they enjoy. Since I am now in my 70s, I am not very proficient at the quick reaction thrill ride. My interests in flight simulation have always been two fold. First, as a scientist and engineer in real life (NOT aeronautical engineer), I really like to experiment and tinker, without risking a horrendous catastrophe if the experiment fails. For example, one of the first files to create something nonstock in FSX, was the mods I made to the default DC-3 to model the Japanese version with less powerful engines, the L2D2. The second thing I enjoy, I like to go to places I will never be able to visit in reality, and take in the landscape and scenery to experience a taste of some strange and exotic environment, for example fly out of UCFM or SCSB. I know I am not what most are after, but that does not hurt the person that likes to fly around their hometown, we can both enjoy for our varied purposes. If you enjoy VR, I don't disparage your quest! We can all enjoy!
  6. I suspect that is a nod to P3D which is heavy into that venue. Also, they may be working on supersonic and super cruise flight, which complicates the flight dynamic modeling, to get that correctly modeled with the new engine.
  7. One thing I noted in the aircraft list, there are no regional turboprops. I wish they had a Dash 8-200 for example, to serve a lot of small regional airports.
  8. Probably in this order. KFMZ to KOLU KFET to KRAP KMCI to KCLE
  9. A few thoughts from my perspective. Some things I really like about X-plane 11. The landscape is much more realistic than FSX and from the screenshots i have seen P3D v3 or 4. Airports out of the box, look a lot more like the airports I have seen than FSX. OK, what will FS2020 look like, it may be even better or it may model generic farmland like FSX. I have not seen any screenshots out in the world I fly from FS2020 so i don't have any real opinion, but X-plane is a big improvement over FSX in that regard. My BIG complaint with X-plane 11 is the lack of real options for quality aircraft, in freeware. Many freeware models are visually amateurish and many just don't fly the way I expect. The autopilot in X-plane is very different than in FSX, An example, the free Airbus A350 when set to a flight level of 36,000 feet, will just keep climbing on out past 40,000 ft. Even negative vs settings don't stop the climb. This morning, a small AI aircraft was sitting nose down in the traffic way of Menorca Airport, blocking traffic. There are just too many unexpected malfunctions and oddities in X-plane. I hope FS2020 will get that kind of thing solved before release. Now what I expect to be a problem with FS2020. Software in general has become more intrusive and sends out more information than I prefer. Will FS2020 be a vehicle to collect more data? Will it be a short subscription service, requiring monthly "investment". Will the community be able to support FS2020 like FS9 & FSX, with a massive variety of quality free models and gorgeous payware aircraft? Will the flight model be configurable and adaptable? We don't know any of that yet, just that big cities look fantastic. One more thing with X-plane 11, it does need computer power to exploit it. My frame rates are quite good in the places I fly, but the fan speeds are greater than FSX or other software I run. If I didn't have a modern computer, I don't think it would run well. Caveat, I am old enough to remember chastising a then prominent participant on this forum who was complaining about going to FS2000 and the learning curve required. I admonished him to be patient, that the improvement more than justified the reaclimation. I suspect FS2020 will be a similar step forward.
  10. Thank you for the reply. I am not sure I want to mess with my registry. I guess I will just go backwards to FS2004. Thanks again!
  11. My issues are not about system performance, in fact I am running quality, objects, and effects all maxed, and 4x SSAA+FSAA without any stutters or lag. It isn't that the airports failing, it is that the rural and remote airports I commonly use in FSX are just strips of concrete instead of buildings and landmarks found in FSX. For example, KFMZ is a former bomber training base with large hangers seen for miles, and it is now a Nebraska State Airport, but in X-plane, it is just a patch of concrete. Likewise, Texas 37F is just a concrete strip. More vexing, however, is trying to figure out how to set the King Air autopilot?? It is down on the right floor beside the seat, and the gauges to set it are on the dash, assuming I could even figure out how to make the control adjust the heading vector? I must be dense, as I don't find a user guide for this apparatus, and if I did, I still can't move the dials and see the resultant values in the gauges?
  12. I am a veteran of FS2000, FS2002, FS2004, and FSX. I have many files in the library. All that said, I can't get X-plane to do almost anything I want to do. All my favorite airports lack buildings or don't exist. The autopilots make me pull my hair out (what is left)! I can't get the default King Air to do much of anything. The 737-800 bounces around and won't hold altitude? My consternation level is becoming ridiculous! I have a new computer I bought last fall, I7-9700, 2070 video and 32 gig of ram and an m.2 card. I ought to be enjoying simulation, but all I get is frustration! I would go back to FSX, but I can't get it to activate!
  13. These would make low altitude runs right over my grade school. Thanks!
  14. I really like the design and concept. The air file models a much too heavy and large aircraft for this model.
  15. Hi Austin,

Are you still in Kansas? Hope all is well!

    Bob

  16. Hello Doug,

I am also a flight dynamics guy. I have not been very active in the forum since 2012 (I was user name biguglyguy then). I was doing train simulation physics for much of that time and also moderating in Nel's Train Simulator Forum. That didn't leave much time for flight dynamics. I see you seem to work more in the larger aircraft, while I tend more toward the smaller planes, particularly the aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s. Are you a native Texan?
