  1. Thank you Inuss. Ref #2, obviously programming before departure depends on the wind remaining roughly the same direction! As I found out, the one time I got a STARS loaded into Honeywell FMC, I enjoyed the experience. Blowed if I could recall how I did it, despite several attempts since. For a free FMC it is pretty good, to be fair, but nevertheless, frustrating! As an aside, I would buy a PMDG or nxg 737, if they were available, and learn their FMC. However, I fly offline, so I anticipate an activation issue, even if the products were available. I do appreciate that advices I am getting here, clearly some of my concepts are erroneous, but I quite enjoy being enlightened .
  2. sorry for the delay, been trying to use STARS in the Honeywell FMC. Somehow, on one occasion, I managed to load one and fly down on it. Can’t repeat the program of it. (Too damn old!) Not quite sure how STARS comes into it , if you are flying IFR and being talked down by ATC, why do you use STARS? I can fly the Honeywell to the destination but I don’t know when to input the STARS into the FMC, ( surely I have to be near the destination to know which runway the ATC wants me to use?)..or exactly how to program it into the FMC. Does anyone know where there is a tutorial (simple steps) on how to do the latter, please? Little knowledge IS dangerous, isn’t it? cheers
  3. Thanks very much for your comments chaps. Interestingly, one of the threads from Flyaway back in the FS9 days, had comments from real life pilots who made the point that ATC and FMC weren’t always in sync and that ATC was to be complied with when at the destination approach. FMC would get you to that area , but then you went to “Heading” and obeyed the ATC talk down. That seems to be ignoring STARS? Though what I know about STARS you can write on a stamp. ( I’ve never used them, don’t know how) The tutorial on YouTube by a chap whose first language isn’t English, doesn’t help me much. Can’t really follow it. Might finish up taking off on ATC, then going FMC, then approach and land on ATC. (Phrogflyer has given me permission ….Thanks mate) cheers
  4. It’s said this is a basic FMC, in any event, not knowing much about them, I have managed to use this one from take off to when I get near the destination . Dont know about sids and stars enough to know even if they can be used with this FMC. ( can’t find a tutorial about this FMC- there is one attempt, but not clear to me). So, I cheat slightly… ask destination for permission to land , then I use the GPS 500 to approach and land () If anyone knows of a clear tutorial, I’d be obliged for a pointer!
  5. Know it’s old but I have found that the last entry of the “legs” shows the speed going to the destination. I have seen 170 for instance, when using the 737. So, I imagine you slow up from that on finals.
  6. Interesting indeed.! You say you dont need to be a pilot, so do I gather that you fly more Arcade than trying to fly like a pilot. (I know that these sim are not like RL, but navigation wise they do make an effort).
  7. Gentlemen, thank you for your comments. Interesting to say the least :), though I find bothprotagonists Skywatcher and Skorna claims to be a touch extreme. Skorna, I cannot believe that 200fps is possible in FSX in ALL circumstances. Top payware jets at big airports in weather, with all parameters implemented?? - sorry, No. Skywatcher, , I have seen that MSFS2020 running at 4K in same circs as above, i believe, on Youtube, on very high end computer. Airbus on IFR flight. Looked great. Surely, FSX would run similarly on that computer. We are talking 64 bit computers here, so the 32bit VAS problem is no longer relevant, I think. In fact, I read somewhere that that is the big plus for using FSX Steam edition, its install does away with the VAS problem. ? Not sure on that, maybe someone with FSX on top 64 bit computer could verify, or correct? I am aware of need for SSD these days. If I got a high end computer, Id go as high as commercially possible, water cooled SSD overclocked etc. Tirith, interesting comment of yours about MSFS able to fly as "study " simulator, and not necessarily is it Arcade only. Clearly some think it is. Have you flown it "as real". So many youtube videos show it being flown Arcade, outside view behind the plane, (is that X box flying?). That, I don't want! What is the position with updates for MSFS.. Are they frequent, and reliable? Is it clear when you have to get them? Skywatcher..... Ive got FS9 sculling around somewhere. Does it need internet activation, and where can I see the best of it. ( I might dig it out:) ) cheers again
  8. Suppose you have a modern new powerful gaming computer capable of running the flight simulator MS2020 . However you have many peripherals, and ancillary programs , in use running FSX on an old computer reasonably satisfactorily. And you want to keep that 'bird -in-the-hand' and not risk losing it or messing it up by interfering with it. But, wouldn't it be great if it could be maxed out as a modern top computer would allow? Because the 'piloting' and closeness to flying a real plane , with emphasis on real-type navigation etc, is good in FSX and maybe not so good in the scenery strong MS2020? Anyway, you want to keep your present computer, but You have an idea that if you bought a top gaming computer of today, and installed MS 2020 on it, what's to stop you also installing FSX on it as well. Please correct me if I have got things wrong here. It's what I understand , but I'm no expert. From what Ive read it is possible to install, from discs, FSX on to Windows 11. This would need some registry entries? ( there are guides out there apparently, but a bit techie for me) Or, you could buy FSX Steam edition, and those install problems wouldn't exist? The idea of doing this is that should MS 2020 not reach expectations, then you would have FSX capable of being run at almost its maximum settings. Now, I know that a disc install of FSX allows much third party scenery, planes etc to be installed, enhancing it tremendously. May I ask, does FSX S.E. allow the same? Does most or all of what can be installed, in FSX disc, work in FSX S.E. Can the FSX Confg file be amended, the same as in FSX disc? Finally, if you had a clean install of FSX on your super duper computer, what scenery would you install, and what wouldn't you.? Some like photo real type, some don't. What are the outstanding sceneries. You have probably gathered that I have got FSX running great on a moderate computer with excellent other aids such as Flightsim Commander etc, but just wishing my computer was as fast and powerful as the modern ones Thank you, and cheers
  9. Hello. It seems for FSX, which I fly on windows XP, that I cannot purchase the FSX version of PMDG747. I have a purchased disc set of PMDG Queen of the Skies for FS2004 when I flew that Sim many years ago. As I say, daft question, does anyone know if this 2004 set will install and fly on FSX? Thanks
  10. Hmmm, That's a thought but I don't want to risk messing up my FSX as it is. Is that a risk, or would system restore undo any mess up I might make, do yo think. Ill see what FS2004 forum might advise as well. Thanks for your input Zippy. You're always encouraging.
  11. Hello…Further thought on this… daft I think, but if you don’t ask….. I have the disc pack,of PMDG 747, Queen of the Skies for FS2004…….Can this be installed , somehow , in FSX. ….and work??
  12. Ok, found where to adjust the zoom. It’s in the camera confg file.
  13. I have read a couple of statements which I think have a bearing on this .one is that trackir use negates the ability to alter the zoom within the cockpit “as you fly “, but use of Ezdok brings that ability back.. Another was in a MegaSceneryEarth advice piece which talked about the “zoom factor in the cockpit “ values. Clearly these can be adjusted somewhere but I don’t know where to look. Is it the FSX config file? The advice was to have a particular setting but it didn’t say where to do it. I believe that’s possibly the answer. Can someone tell me where to adjust this please. ( Any adjustment made using keystrokes, like - or + I’ve tried and doesn’t stay, I need to change the value, I.e .40 or .50 , for example) Thanks in anticipation
  14. Thank you very much , nice to have my suspicions confirmed. I had been to the PMDG website and couldn’t see offer for it on sale.Seems it’s MSFS 2020 or nothing. It crossed my mind that maybe they had released it (for free).Or did I miss something on their site? Thanks again SEE
  15. Hello. Now that FSX PMDG 747 is no longer available to purchase, I see there are some sites from which it can be downloaded for free.? This seems too good to be true, so is it? Also, if and when downloaded, does it still need to be activated or whatever online.? I only play FSX offline, so the answer to the last question may save further query TIA
  16. Yes, well I have used the 2x, 4x etc in the past but that messes up the instructions from ATC( or are there no such instructions in MS2020 like there are in FSX) This begs the question as to who has flown from one side of U.S. to the other, and have you done it without sitting at your computer for hours on end? I cannot believe that MS has not repeated the function from FSX where you can cut out the middle, part of the flight. Tbh, I’m not so sure that readers here are understanding exactly what it is I’m referring to (in FSX). The replies suggest that!
  17. Thanks for your reply…so the answer is .. No, I cannot curtail the flight time , similar to how I describe. I find that odd in that….. do MS seriously expect a simmer flying from say, Chicago to L.A. under IFR , to be sat at his computer for that length of time? Just to be clear about your reply. You say I can reposition the VFR map, …Which doesn’t mean I can reposition my plane within the map, and thus the flight.?
  18. I am thinking of getting this sim. and I have question about the same sort of thing. I have got FSX pretty much as I like it,( but I wouldn’t mind my computer a bit more powerful.) However what I really like about it is , when I fly from A to B, particularly in airliners, I haven’t got the time to sit all through the whole flight, so when I reach cruise Fl, I could go to the menu and click World/Map. and would see my little black plane on the magenta line running from Departure to destination. I click and hold on the plane and move it along the magenta line to a point I “guesstimate “ to be just before Descent begins. I go back into the cockpit and on the ATC menu I request IFR clearance( which I’m given). I then continue and finalise the flight from there. My question is, can I do the same in MS2020,? Thanks
  19. í ½í¸‚í ½í¸‚í ½í¸‚í ½í¸‚í ½í¸‚. Actually, I love ‘em. Makes the navigation great. And modern.
  20. Is this FS Recorder like in FSX, where you replay by dialling inns number of seconds and then it plays it back in a number of views?.In FSX it was great to view your landing immediately after the flight. It used to be under Add Ons in the Menu. I didn’t ask much more of it than this,so I didn’t see any limitations? I’m aware that this is an old thread, so if events have overtaken the need to ask this query, then I do apologise
  21. Hello In FSX there are three planes with glass cockpits. Are there planes in MS2020 that have glass cockpits, please Thanks
  22. Hello David, well, yes, each to their own, as they say. I try to fly as “real” as I’m able, and so I use “real” navigation , especially glass cockpits in VFR. That requires particular dialogue with ATC….and of course, so does IFR when I fly airliners. Very satisfying when you get it right:) I think I’ll try to find a flight sim club in Dorset , UK and pick their brains. Nothing like seeing things done to get the best intell.
  23. Been sleeping on this and I’m now seeing a couple of problems. In my present set up I have a second screen, a monitor, on which I use FS Game commander -very useful for accessing airport info and ILS frequencies etc ( but it isn’t vital ): but what is necessary to keep is the ATC menu . I use this to respond to ATC by clicking on the answers with my mouse. In VFR flying I use the mouse with the ATC menu constantly to select airports etc Having this ATC men on the monitor keeps my VC on the projector screen free of such” pop ups” which if they were on the PJ screen would take away the “realism” of being in the cockpit ( trackir is wonderful for that) and activating the switches etc with the mouse in the manner a real, pilot would do with his hands. And I cannot see how a VR unit would allow me to do that? How do you users get around that,….or do you not? So it’s beginning to look like I’ve got to figure out how to fit a second computer in to still use the pJ and trackir with it……..without burning my bridges and doing away with my present setup. To which I may wish to return if 2020 doesn’t come up to scratch. (I’m sure it will scenerywise, it’s just there has been adverse comment re the piloting aspects! Logistically, it might be a nightmare. Or even not worth it. Decisions, decisions
