The Phabulous MilViz Phantom

Recommended Posts

Bill: Having spent many hours doing engine runs (even into reheat) I can not sit in a (virtual) cockpit that is not how I remember it. Some payware models even have propellor map and rpm gauges! Could you post some pictures of the Milviz cockpit please? Thanks. Dave.

Here you go Dave - don't know if these resemble the RN/RAF configurations or not but at least they don't have prop gauges:D:D:D

The rear WSO (RIO in Navy birds) cockpit modeled in the MilViz release is for the AF F-4E model. I don't think the U.S. Navy/Marine J birds had flight controls in back - not sure about RN/RAF models

YES! Fast, outrageously loud and threatening, dirty exhaust, cranked wings, reverse-dihedral stab, took 2 grown men to tame it... and BIG! My god they were big compared to A4s etc.

Bill, absolutely awesome shots of my favorite fighter-slash-bomber! I'm sorely tempted to add this fps-killer to my struggling machine... but of course, without the realistic smoky jet exhaust, I couldn't stand to fly it.

It doesn't have the typical F4 smoky exhaust trails, does it?

I mean, if it had smoky jet exhaust, I would be FORCED to buy it, and I don't think that's a good idea.

Please, I can't afford the fps hit. Tell me it doesn't have smoky exhaust so I don't have to worry about buying it!

Thanks in advance for lying to me.

Doug

PS: Does it?

Doug: Yes indeed there is smoke. Glad there's a few of us around who still appreciate those thrilling pre-EPA & Al Gore days of yesteryear when both military and commercial jets proudly spewed clouds of noxious black fumes into the pristine blue sky. Ah the memories! I love the smell of JP-4 in the morning :D:D:D:D

PS: A caution on buying right now. There's an issue with the initial release that has the installation causing FSX, SE, and P3D CTDs on some systems (like mine!!) - supposedly there's a near term fix coming out from MilViz - in the meantime I'm flying in reduced capability mode - had to disable the Sys_dll file to stop the CTDs so most of the aircraft systems are not working right - suitable for VFR flight only :(

Nope. Driving is for the Front Seat Gunner. The GIB (guy in back, or RIO) kept his head DOWN eyes glued to the LRU-10 (RIO Scope), hand on the Acq Handle to make the radar find the baddies out there. It split up the workload, altho from reading a number of books by AF pilots, they think the GIB is there as a copilot, at most, THEY (picture god-like pronunciation) can handle the damn radar, they don't need no-one else in their airplane...

I worked with several long retired F-5 and F-100 AF pilots, and their arrogance astounded me. No offence to any zoomies out there, believe me, I am just saying what I saw with my own eye (yeah, just one). And yet, when they had to learn the computers, we hand to paste little stick-on letters on the space-bar for them...you know, A-N-Y...

Anyway...

Nice shots, Pat! Is that you in the pilot's seat getting ready to pull the ejection seat handle or the guy behind putting his foot into the jet intake?

Nope, but if you look REALLY close, you can just about see my boot soles, toes up deep down the intake. Great place for a nap. MUCH quieter than one would suspect. :D Especially wearing plugs AND muffs. And no comments about muffs from Hoggy!!

Never tried the 'idle to reheat (sorry - afterburner) and back' trick,

Actually, that was MIL->Idle->MIL (100% N2), just before you notch it into AB or reheat if you prefer. When doing AB runs, we would have to have a QAE, so we wouldn't do "The Trick" but they wold let us slip our fingers into the tailpipe, ostensibly to "check the laminar airflow". More that it was just amazing having that BIG a flame, that hot, that close to your hand, and only feel some heat not the burning off you expect. Just stand parallel to the tailpipe, and slowly stretch your hand back along it to the turkey-feathers, then apply a little pressure with JUST your fingers so that when they can, they curl up and the back into the tailpipe, maintaining contact all the way round. Scary as hell, but Ohhh what a feeling!! The flame, right there making your guts rumble, the heat of the burner flame... indescribable really...

Awesome machine Bill, you do her proud with those shots!

I couldn't agree any more!

Pat☺

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Oh. Em. Gee. *swoons from that glorious, nasty smoke*

I ASKED you POLITELY to LIE TO ME! :p

So, of course, now I've gotta have it. Since only current owners of this airplane know about the issues you mentioned (I read every word I could find on it, on the Milviz site and elsewhere, and no CTD problems were evident) would you drop back by here and let us (ME!) know when the issues are fixed and a patch or patched release is available to purchasers?

Thanks!

This one is fun in the mean time until the Milviz is available for you. Enough smoke to make you barf with some minor Zippy mods!

Bill,

here is the F4M front panel as I remember it:

f-4m_front_panel.jpg

The clue for me is always the 'tape and counter' fuel contents gauge above the engine instruments on the right hand side of the panel. The counter was (I think) for total fuel, the tape for fuselage fuel. Engine instruments, from top to bottom were: rpm, tgt, fuel flow and reheat nozzle position indicator. The pedestal panel had the three hydraulic system gauges (not engine oil pressure as in the MilViz, and the pneumatic system gauge.

Regarding 'two stickers', the RAF did have some dual control aircraft where you could bolt a simple joystick in the rear cockpit for training. RAF F4s carried the identifications XV..., twin stickers carried the identification XT... But these were not dedicated training aircraft, without the rear stick they had the same operational capability as any other single stick aircraft.

Regards,

Dave.

A quick note about the Pilot's radar scope (LRU-9): Make sure it's two hold down knurl-knobs, one to either side below the HUD combiner glass, are properly screwed ALL the way in, and safety-wired. There are a plane captain and W/C 630 (Radar Shop) QAE in Leavenworth that didn't check one, and when the plane took the cat shot, the scope wound up buried into the back of the pilot's seat. Went right through him like his chest wasn't even there. Thankfully the RIO, who now couldn't see through the blood sprayed on his visor, had enough presence of mind to eject them both. Boat nearly ran them over, but luckily, it was a waist cat, so they were off to the side just enough.

Not currently TacPack enabled. MilViz has indicated they are looking at doing a TacPack version - which would be awesome - but no time table - I don't think it will be anytime soon.

Issue with the current release is that it causes CTDs on some systems (mine being one). To stop the CTDs I had to disable the Sys_dll file which means most of the aircraft systems don't work. MilViz says they are working on a fix which is supposed to be out in the next day or two

I was Radar on the N, J, and S models, hence the moniker :D
