Hello Bossspecops, over the years I have noticed quite a few aircraft that dissasemble in spotter view when you switch landing lights on.

Such as the Da Silva texan:

LANDING LIGHTS ON:

landinglightson.thumb.jpg.7463573cf72d850feeb5a4bdf0af0fbd.jpg

That's EXACTLY what I'd done! Just started the descent to water land to refuel (my fuel burn calculations were a bit out...) and switched on the landing lights. It never occurred to me that had anything to do with it.

I tried it again this morning and FSX works normally of course. [Bang head mode on]

I'll keep a close eye on it as I head eastward over the next few days.

Thanks for that, looks like we found it. 👍

As you can see guys 'there ain't nothin there'! (You can see the roadhouse in the distance)

We are well aware that nothing is at YCAG. It all developed with a little scenery (no fuel and a roadhouse) then became a temp fuel area. That scenery (two versions were posted to these threads) is for FSX and can be used or not based upon "actual" B&H or fictional fun.

Always Aviate, then Navigate, then Communicate. And never be low on Fuel, Altitude, Airspeed, or Ideas.

Yep. It was an 'overfly' in the original but a few of us worry about fuel and sometimes prefer shorter legs. Overflying is certainly best, after all it's more authentic. On the other hand, we're only having fun with the route and if anyone is going to stop we may as well have some scenery.

I went back and checked the research you did on the original route and noted the 'nothin there' similarities to many of the flyover's.  Sure glad that VOR near YCAG popped up.  Thanks again defaid ...

Indeed PP ... been a good group effort from the start!

but in my FS9 it dosen't cause any problems, everything still works, it's just disconcerting landing a plane of bits, unless it's night time I just switch the landing lights off.

Just used this Aircraft lately in my FS9 as well... without any issues so far...

The difference between FS2004 and P3D.

And possibly the difference in Barons as well.  Wikipedia showed several different model years, engine manufacturers,  and horsepower ratings for Barons.  It's all what you happen to have.

Regardless of model or hp, I can't see any Baron getting to 17k + ft without turbo;  and certainly no pilot is going there without a pressurized cockpit.  Someone did make a turbo version of the default Baron 58, and pressurization isn't an issue with FS2004 (or later, to the best of my knowledge;  though some more intricate aircraft have the systems modeled and give warnings if they're not properly adjusted).

As I mentioned, my Baron is a Baron 58 with 550C engines.  According to Wikipedia that configuration is rated for a service ceiling of 20,668' on a "Standard Day".  Since it's summer in Oz and at least 30f hotter than a Standard Day, I'd say the almost 18,000' I achieved in my Baron 58 is probably very accurate.

So... anybody got any Issues?

None from me.  Getting my Chipmunk sorted out.  Will send in the official entry form a bit later when I get the repaint done to a more authentic livery for flight in Australia. 🙂

Just what I thought when I woke up this morning, it being New Year's Day of course. And in a moment of madness I though I'd fly 'G-AUST' out to Perth from where I am in west UK, it's only about 10500 miles and I've got 3 weeks to do it in. 🙂

I am also crazy!  After a discussion with Kit, I have also decided to try to fly to Perth from my home airport of Bremerton Washington (KPWT) in the DHC1-B-2 Chipmunk.  Just finished retrofitting larger fuel tanks in both wings.  Tried to add a center tank instead, but the aircraft would not see it.  Also hope to have the aircraft repainted in more authentic RAAF colors.

Going to try the Alaska to Russia route to get there.  Hope to see you all on time by the 15th. 🙂

Hello Basil, a bit off topic but the Texan in your pics is the Daniel Da Silva model?

Have you tried switching the landing lights on with the Texan in the Spot Plane window?

On another topic, your pictures look great, what resolution are you running FS9 at?

The maximum I can get is 1280 x 1024 x 32 have you managed a better resolution? If so how?

Or do you do post processing of some sort before posting the pics?

I had hoped to take part in the 2024 Australian Rally and did do some work on selecting aircraft.

However, I have been informed my my doctor I have to have surgery early in February, meaning I will miss at least a week, maybe two of the rally.

Therefore, I will not be entering the Rally this time. Hopefully I will be up and about for the next challenge. My suggestion would be a rerun of the 1936 Schlesinger Race, maybe with modern equipment.

Thanks.

I'm sorry you won't be joining us for the next run, Sirrus.  My wife and I will keep you in our prayers for your surgery - we hope everything goes well and that you're back on your feet quickly.  I'm looking forward to seeing you at our next event.

Take care,

Tom

Hey Mike,

This is the Alphasim / Virtavia Model and the textures are high definition Textures by Pablo Diaz (you'll find the repaint here in the Library on Flightsim).

actually yes... they work just fine... the wing lights are not visible as on though, when using DBS Walk & Follow... only the tail Light is visible as on, as you can see on my pics.

I am running my sim at a resolution of 1920x1080. Unfortunately can't get a higher resolution either…

Zero Post Processing at the pictures.

Hope that helps...

This is the freeware IRIS Diamond DA42 for FSX. The IRIS DA40 is also freeware for FSX.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes. This has been hanging over me for a while and if I have been irritable/annoyed/bad tempered with anyone I apologize for that. I will try to be nicer in future.

A while back we discussed a "fly-in" with everyone going from their home airport to a common site in Australia;  looks like this is unofficially taking place.  Cool.  My old Staggerwing will be following you from KCMH.  Hope the heater works well, Siberia in January isn't exactly a vacation spot.

Best wishes for your hospital stay.  I try to stay away from them myself, too many sick people ...and a lot of patients too.
