BillD22
Here are some shots from the mid 1970's of an Eastern Airlines L188 Electra flying the hourly shuttle between National Airport in DC (KDCA) and Laguardia (KLGA) in New York. The Potomac River visual departure procedure provides some great views of famous landmarks. Ready for takeoff on Runway 01 with the DC skyline in the distance. After liftoff we need to make an immediate left turn to stay over the Potomac River for our departure to avoid the restricted airspace over DC. Passing over the 14th Street Bridge we get a spectacular view of the monuments on the National Mall off the right side. (The red nav light on the right wingtip is a flaw in the original FSX L188 model). Not all the famous landmarks are on the right. On the left side if the aircraft we see the Pentagon and the office buildings of Crystal City and will shortly pass Arlington National Cemetery. The departure procedure requires us to continue following the winding river on our climbout until we're clear of the DC metro area. Up ahead are the Memorial, Roosevelt, and Key Bridges with the office buildings of Rosslyn in Virginia to the left and the Kennedy Center and famous Watergate condos just above the #4 engine and Georgetown at the end of the Key Bridge in DC to the right. Climbing up thru the scattered clouds we start our turn away from the river to head northeast for the 50-minute flight up to Laguardia. Rupert
Great flight Bill!! I love the detail and scenery, but especially the course following limits! Most who have never been a pilot have no clue as to all the obstacles and flight restrictions that apply. Especially around cities and military installations! It's not at all a case of take off and point the nose in the direction of your destination! Maybe many decades ago the concept of a "direct flight" was true. But even when flying over the ocean, that certainly wasn't allowed in the 60's nor has it been since. Michael Edited October 24, 2022 by Rupert Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.
