how do you get the 3d cockpit view to work

Are you talking about a default 737 or one that has been added on? If it is an addon, then there are a lot of them out there that have no VC (3D cockpit).

OR, if you just can't get to it, cycle through the various views using the 'a' or 'A' key. OR, under the Views menu, select View Mode/Cockpit and select Virtual Cockpit if it's available. If it isn't shown there, then the aircraft probably doesn't have one, since ALL of the AVAILABLE views are in that menu structure.
