fsSteve
Hello, FSX had been working fine on my Win 10 PC until the APRIL 2018 Windows 10 update was installed. jethrom
Hi fsSteve, API.dll refers to the Application Program Interface, in this case the API for FSX. It looks like Win10 update installed a WDM graphics driver in the latest round overriding a functioning Nvidia Whql driver. Head over to Nvidia and download the latest driver, or the driver version you had before that was working, install fresh and see if your Sim works. Unfortunatley rolling back graphics drivers can be a little hit and miss, they tend to leave remnants behind causing no end of headaches. A fresh WHQL driver for your GT740M/Win10Home/64 from Nvidia will most likely fix the problem.
fsSteve
Thanks jethrom. I discovered that the program runs using Intel Graphics but not the NVIDIA, so I downloaded and installed the latest NVIDIA drivers from Control Panel and rebooted, but the program still fails using the NVIDIA card. I may just stick with the Intel graphics, at least the program runs using that. Steve.
ftldave
Letting FSX install into the default path, C:\Program Files (x86), is bad practice, almost always results in problems because of the automatic security imposed on those directories. Though probably not the source of your specific problem, you really should consider reinstalling to c:\fsx or some other non "Program Files" directory. CRJ_simpilot
Read my Sig. I have read many people having issues with that April update. You should not let M$ touch your GPU drivers or anything else as well. https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disable-automatic-driver-downloads-on-windows-10 OOM errors? Read this. What the squawk? longbreak754
Hi Steve, Check your fsx.cfg file and see if you have any [Display.Devic..0] entries. They look like these examples from my .cfg file [DISPLAY.Device.ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.0] Mode=1920x1080x32 [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics.0] Mode=1920x1080x32 Note that the Mode= entry should be the same - I have seen cases where API.ddl errors (and other graphic .dll errors) have been caused by a Mode= mis-match. Regards Brian
jorgen.s.andersen
Brian, Shouldn't there only be one entry? Like, only the Radeon one? Jorgen

CRJ_simpilot
In that case, try this: Backup your current fsx.cfg to the desktop and delete the current one. Once you successfully launch FSX the Sim will rebuild a new FSX.cfg. Once you get this sorted, there is a sticky here on how to optimize the fsx.cfg. You should look at it. EDIT- Never mind, you have the following: [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M.1] Mode=1280x800x32 AntiAlias=1 [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.0] Mode=1280x800x32 Is this a laptop? Try right clicking FSX and running with the NVIDIA GPU. If this is not a laptop, I'd go into BIOS and disable onboard video. Only allow your dedicated GPU to run. And like I mentioned, you should follow the steps in that link I gave and not let M$ update your drivers. EDIT 2- You have three entries. [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.1] Mode=1280x800x32 And the GPU indicates this is indeed a laptop. Edited August 19, 2018 by CRJ_simpilot OOM errors? Read this. What the squawk? CRJ_simpilot
Here's another post with the same api.dll crash: https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?276792-Another-case-of-FSX-crashing-to-desktop Here's another related thread: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/502613-issue-i-cannot-fix-dll-crash/ I did see that you have half of your RAM being used which shouldn't be the case. Launch Task Manager and post what is using all that RAM. Do make sure FSX is installed to C:\ drive only. Searching for the model laptop you have shows no results for ET2321I. What is the exact Asus model laptop you have? Edited August 19, 2018 by CRJ_simpilot OOM errors? Read this. What the squawk? An awesome weather website with oodles of Info. and options. Wile E. fsSteve
It's not a laptop it's an ASUS all in one desktop PC.
jorgen.s.andersen
Definitely go into the BIOS (usually on an ASUS you hold down the DEL key on booting) and disable the Intel graphics. After that, do as CRJ said, delete or rename your present FSX.CFG, and let FSX build a new one. After that, go here: https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?259352-FSX-P3D-Software-and-Hardware-Tweaking-Guide This is the sticky that CRJ mentioned, and it's the best tweaking guide around IMNSHO. il88pp
Shut down the pc. Disconnect the monitor cable from the pc. Then look for another such connector. The connectors via the mainboard are usually at the top area on the back. (that's the intel hd graphics connectors.) they are usually positioned vertically. ___ | | | | | | --- The connectors off the videocard are further down. Mounted horizontally. _______ |_____| find a connector (port) there to attach the cable to. With the cable attached to the videocard the pc will use that, and no longer use the HDgraphics. No changes in BIOS needed at all. (there may not be the right type port there. If not, check the monitor. Sometimes a monitor has two types of connectors. And if so you can use a different cable.) (if the monitor has only a type, and the card does not have that, then you may be able to get a converter to attach it with.) fsSteve
The monitor is integrated into the motherboard so there is no monitor cable. There is a second screen attached via HDMI. I don't really want to muck around with BIOS as I might stuff something else. Repeating that everything worked properly before the April update, so it's obviously something in that update that had unintended consequences which should be fixed. jorgen.s.andersen
This is interesting - now the file has 2 instances of both graphics adapters! Try modifying the file like this: The section that looks like this: [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.0] Mode=1920x1080x32 AntiAlias=1 TriLinear=1 you should make look like this: // [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.0] // Mode=1920x1080x32 // AntiAlias=1 // TriLinear=1 The section looking like this: [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.1] Mode=1024x768x32 make that look like this: // [DISPLAY.Device.Intel® HD Graphics Family.1] // Mode=1024x768x32 and finally the one looking like this: [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M.1] Mode=1024x768x32 make that look like this: // [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M.1] // Mode=1024x768x32 and finally set the monitor resolution to 1280x800x32. Then start FSX and see what happens. Completely unrelated to your problem, but to make the file more readable, I put a blank line between the sections. It does absolutely nothing to the sim, only makes the file more readable. Jorgen
f16jockey_2
This is interesting - now the file has 2 instances of both graphics adapters! I can be mistaken, but isn't that normal? I remember having read somewhere that [xxx.0] is for windowed mode and [xxx.1] for full screen. Or vice versa. Or I'm wrong... Wim
jorgen.s.andersen
Wim, I don't know - I always run in full-screen mode.... Jorgen
f16jockey_2
Wim, I don't know - I always run in full-screen mode.... And I always run windowed, as I have only one monitor and I want to run other apps while flying. But I do have 2 entries: [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.0] Mode=1680x1050x32 Anisotropic=1 AntiAlias=1 [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.0.0] Mode=1680x1050x32 Anisotropic=1 AntiAlias=1 It's not [xxx.0] and [xxx.1] as you see. I guess I was wrong. Wim
tiger1962
The .0 and .1 display entries could mean that both video cards are enabled in the BIOS settings. The on-board graphics should be disabled in the BIOS. Edited August 21, 2018 by tiger1962 Tim Wright "The older I get, the better I was..." jorgen.s.andersen
That's what we have advised the OP to do but he's not comfortable with doing that - which I can understand. So, the next best thing is to remove the references from FSX.CFG. Strange, though, that a desktop has 2 graphics adapters. My motherboard in my main desktp is an ASUS, but no Intel adapters there. On the ASUS laptop where I'm writing this right now I do have 2 adapters. Just for fun, maybe I should install FSX here and see what the FSX.CFG then will look like. JSkorna
Just for fun, maybe I should install FSX here and see what the FSX.CFG then will look like. Jorgen It will have a .0 and.1 display entry. And you don't even need 2 cards. A single card with 2 active video outs will also have 2 display entries. http://www.air-source.us/images/sigs/000219_195_jimskorna.png
fsSteve
Every time I comment out the Intel graphics options in fsx.cfg, they are put back in again after I restart fsx.
il88pp
HD Graphics == Videochip part of the processor. Not separate part, but part of processor chip. Not greatest performance. Plenty Good for office work. Not so much for games. NVidea == separate video chip. But, normally actively cooled by it's own fan. In this computer not actively cooled. It's a flat screen on a stand only. Probably just the Nvidia chip, soldered to the mainboard, and covered with a metal block to absorb rapid temperature changes. 5-4200U CPU Notice the U in the 4200U Laptop processor. Optimised for lower power consumption (long battery life). Not so much for "Power". Not great for gaming. And very likely also not actively cooled by a fan in that pc. About i5 processors. (and i3 and i7) THey run at a certain speed normally. In this case 1.6 Ghz If needed it can accelerate. (turbo frequency that's called) To maximum 2.6 Ghz Just after starting FSX it will run at that speed. (2.6) But, If the temperature starts going up too rapidly, the processor will slow down. (To not overheat.) Back to 1.6Ghz. If it gets really hot in the computer, it slows even more. to 0.8 Ghz. (half of 1.6) Desktops have all parts mounted in a large case. Mine has three large fans blowing air through it. Yours is not really a desktop. It's more like a laptop on a stand. (or maybe tablet would be a better word.) And it has the typical laptop parts (U processor, and M 'card' or actually chip really. (GT 740M)) Anywoozels, that aside. Was just as info. Some questions. How many monitors are you using. One or two. And tell us which monitor is connected how, and which card each monitor is using. Oh, and another thing, what is the issue here?? Maybe I just missed it. I saw you mentioned some update. (And that it's most likely unrelated, as others have the update and their FSX runs fine.) You also listed lots of parts. But what is actually amiss? Does FSX not start? Error messages on screen pop up? What do you see happening. Lots of questions, I know, but try to answer them all. It's difficult to just guess an aswer.:D Edited August 21, 2018 by il88pp [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
