USB 2.0 vs. USB 3.0

My new gaming computer has only USB 3.0 ports. When I try to set button assignments on my my CH Yoke the buttons won't register when I touch them. Also the settings for my Saitek rudder pedals seem to acquire my yoke settings etc. If I unplug the controls and re-plug them I can sometimes get better results. Can you use USB 3.0 with FSX?

Hi Jim, as USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 it is indeed strange that you experience difficulties with your yoke, etc. Unfortunately I do not have a solution for you, but I am sure another member will jump in. Good luck.

I would also check to see if you need updated drivers... AD
Definitely check this!

Some legacy USB 2 controllers may never get along with USB 3, even with updated drivers. There is a bios setting which effectively downgrades USB 3 ports to USB 2 functionality, disabling USB xHCI does this. Note that this will effect ALL usb ports.

Once you plug a controller in a certain USB port Windows remembers. So if you plug your controller to a different USB port then Windows will have a 'problem' as it already has that controller 'assigned' to the 'other' USB port. I don't the know the 'fix' (ie: delete registry entry for the USB ports - Google it). The way to install controllers so they work is to install ONE (yoke) and assign keys. Use it in Sim. DISCONNECT. Then plug in the OTHER (pedals) and assign keys / axis. Use it in Sim. Then you can plug the other in the ORIGINAL USB plug you used to assign it keys. Don't play musical USB ports - it messes things up - mark that USB port as 'YOKE' and the other one 'PEDALS', just to be safe.

The folks at GoFlight have a fix for their hardware incompatibility with USB 3.0 which I would think should work for you. Check their website. It has to do with going into the PC Bios and finding a setting titled “USB Debug” or similar and enabling it. This will convert the onboard USB ports from 3.0 to 2.0.

I use a freeware utility for removing registry entry's for times when I need to move a USB device to a different port...

Works quite well.

I also turned off the BIOS xHCI since the damn Intel USB 3.0 driver would report that I had too many devices connected. I'm using powered hubs with sufficient power so it was wrong. All my USB devices are 2.0 anyways.
