MikeN87
I just learned that TrackIR does not work on a Mac (serious bummer). I'm wondering if anyone has found a similar solution for viewing that can work on a Mac. Thanks for your help
MikeN87
The greatest break though for flight simming would be the TrackIR, or more specifically, ANY hardware that would do what TrackIR does. And NOBODY is interested in this topic. If the people who make TrackIR would hear from Mac users more, maybe they would see a market for this and develop it. I can't believe that no one is replying to this post. There has to be someone that is interested in a view tool like this. No?
loki
There probably are some out there who are interested. Maybe trying asking around the X-plane forums here and elsewhere. Unfortunately, though, Macs aren't exactly big in the PC gaming world and don't really get much attention in this area from Apple or developers. MikeN87
Thanks. Lesson learned. Next Computer will be a PC But this raises a bunch of other questions. Apple clearly makes a superior computer. So why wouldn't Apple compete for the gaming world? And, what makes a PC better for gaming?
mrzippy
There are people using MACs for FSX. They have to Bootcamp Windows on to their systems. Wouldn't TrackIR install into that and be usable? Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!

So why wouldn't Apple compete for the gaming world? And, what makes a PC better for gaming? That depends on what you consider better. In the Windows world you have much wider video card support and better support in the OS for DirectX and OpenGL. Apple does support OpenGL, but it is a few versions behind, and they show no interest in updating it, preferring to push their own Metal graphics API. However, as Macs and iOS devices are the only ones using Metal, it isn't getting the same traction with developers as DirectX or OpenGL. On the hardware side you can't upgrade the video cards in any of the iMac or Mac Mini computers, and the GPUs they do use are usually laptop models, which are often a bit slower than their desktop counter parts. Apple has never been about being everything to everyone. Their focus is on making computers that just work on both the hardware and software side for general computer use. And many Mac users will go for a PlayStation or Xbox for games, for similar reasons. For TrackIR and Macs, looks like some people have got it working using third party software. Minor point, but Mac doesn't need to be in all caps. It's not an acronym. ;)
