My only experience with JATO was watching some of the A-3s in the squadron practicing takeoffs at Whidbey just before our WestPac cruise in 1970. I think the Maintenance Chief explained that there are real hot days in Da Nang that required the heavier aircraft to use JATO. Actually there were hot days all over Vietnam I'd have loved to have JATO to get some forward motion going before the trees got in the way. CH-34s & CH-46s both had wheels. But the heat of Vietnam hurt the T-58s in the 46s a lot more than the rotary recips. in the 34s! Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.
