archmcd Posted December 8, 2016 Share Posted December 8, 2016 I would like to edit the .cfg file for the brakes on the C/F18 Hornet but no cursor shows up to be able to do that. Aircraft .cfg should be edited with Notepad. `Open with` should give you the option. .cfg files are seen as a system file by Windows so you need appropriate permissions. Windows 10 protection usually means it's better to copy the file OUT of the folder, edit it on the desktop, save it there then copy it back and overwrite the original. ALWAYS back up the original first. finally Dont mess with the file if you don't understand what you are doing. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
napamule2 Posted December 9, 2016 Share Posted December 9, 2016 The braking strength in aircraft cfg is 1.7 (default is 1.0). So the problem is in the air file. The 'braking strength=0'. In section 1100 (flight dynamics) it can be set up to '=32767'. Trial & error to set to what you want or need. You can also get REALLY strong brakes by making it '= -32767' (yes, minus - don't ask me how it is possible but it is). You would not need that much though. Just putting it out there for 'digestion'. Back up cfg or air before you edit them to save yourself a BIG headache. Otherwise..play with it. It's fun. You will need 'AirEd' program to edit air file. And while you are playing with air file you could use the spoiler as 'tailhook'. In ('flight dynamics' section) set 'spoiler drag= -2'. But you also must go cfg and (in 'airplane_geometry) change 'spoiler_drag= 59.989' for best results. The spoiler will now stop you (almost) as quick as catching a wire (which you don't need now - ha). Have fun. Actually, while you CAN, you shouldn't. Wordpad and other text editors all use more sophisticated elements that can be hidden in the files they modify - line break markers, font modifiers and the like and these are INCOMPATIBLE with the reading of the .cfg by the sim. Include them and the text can be ignored, misread or not give the results anticipated. The KISS approach is the one to adopt here and Notepad is the way to go.
