/images/notams/notams22/nimb0105/nimbus1.jpgAlmost a year ago we published the 2021 roadmap. We where prettyconfident of achieving it but unfortunately life had other plans forus. One of the Nimbus team members passed away, it was very unexpectedand extremely sad. It really affected us on a personal level and wehad to take a break. 2021 also gave us the opportunity to participate in a new projectfor a real aircraft company. This will allow us to create morerealistic flight models and experiences for the simulator; moreinformation on this soon. We have a lot of catch up to do, but we are very close to releaseKIAD and a few months after that the other airports we announced oneyear ago. The military UH-1 will also receive an update, not onlyfixing some bugs but adding more functionality; some funfunctionality. We really expect to have several releases this year and maybe bringa few surprises. To all of you who like our products and had supported us during theyears, my most sincere apologies for the delays and lack ofinformation. We are now back on track and here are some images showing how closewe are to finish KIAD. /images/notams/notams22/nimb0105/nimbus2.jpg /images/notams/notams22/nimb0105/nimbus3.jpgSource

Review: Nimbus UH-1 HueyBy Paul Mort /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-01.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-02.jpgHello once again fellow flightsimulator fans and welcome to a review of what has to be one of themost well-known helicopters of all time, the venerable Huey. NimbusSimulations have recreated this iconic and well-loved helicopter, andin this review I will take a look at how it performs in X-Plane. History Of The UH-1The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed 'Huey') is a military helicopterpowered by a single engine, with a two-bladed main rotor, plus tailrotors. It was the first member of the prolific Huey family, developedby Bell Helicopters to meet a 1952 US Army requirement for a medicalevacuation and utility helicopter and first flew in 1956. The UH-1 wasthe first turbine-powered helicopter produced for the United Statesmilitary and more than 16,000 have been built since 1960. The Iroquoiswas originally designated HU-1, hence the Huey nickname, which hasremained in common use despite the official designation to UH-1 in1962. The UH-1 first saw service in combat operations during theVietnam war with around 7,000 helicopters being deployed. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-03.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-04.jpgInstallation DetailsInstallation of the Nimbus Huey was pretty much a standardaffair. I downloaded the zipped folder from the X-Plane.org store, andafter extracting it, found that I had a folder named 'Nimbus UH-1'which was complete with all the necessary files, including nine extraliveries and a folder containing a comprehensive usermanual. Finalising the installation was simply a case of copying theextracted folder over to my 'X-Plane/Aircraft' folder. ExteriorVisually, the Nimbus Huey is extremely close to that of itsreal-life counterpart, with the 3D modelling being some of the bestI've seen in X-Plane. The developers have even included details suchas the rotor blade mountings, which when viewed up close, wereincredibly similar to that of the real Huey. Other details included noless than six animated doors, which I will talk about later in themenu section. All in all, when viewed from outside, the Nimbus Hueygave a fantastic impression of the real thing. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-19.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-20.jpgFunction MenusOne of the first things you will notice when loading up the NimbusHuey is the column of menu icons down the left side of thescreen. These individual icons are used for the following options: /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-07.jpgLooking at them in order; first we have the checklist sheet, whichwhen selected, opens a small window giving a detailed account of allthe required actions needed to get the Huey airborne. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-05.jpg The next option is Maintenance, and this I found particularlyimpressive, as it gave me the option to repair and service theHuey. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-10.jpgClicking on any labelled part of the Huey, restored it to itsformer glory. By checking the 'Always Like New' dialogue box in thebottom left, ensures that your Huey constantly stays in tip topconditions (a useful option for casual flyers). Next on the list was the 'Controls position' icon. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-09.jpgWhen selecting this, a small window opens in the bottom right ofthe screen and gives the position of the cyclic-collective and pedalsas a reference. The image above shows the approximate position fortakeoff. Moving on, and our next item is the Copilot option. For the sake of authenticity, Nimbus have not installed anautopilot, however, on selecting the "Copilot" icon, a new windowopens, allowing you to pass control over to your number two. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-03.jpgOnce control is handed over, you can select how the copilot flies, straight ahead on the designated heading, or a chosen continuous loopwith variable bank angle. When you no longer require the copilot, simply select the "TakeControl" option, and the Huey is now back in your hands (hopefullysafely). /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-06.jpgWeight and balance are controlled through the next menu icon, andthis allowed me to fine tune the settings of the Huey. I particularlyliked the option to remove pilots and passengers, as not only did thisallow me to change the visual appearance of the helicopter, but alsoreach certain functions which would otherwise have been hidden by thecrew. Finally, we have the "Doors and accessories" menu icon... /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-01.jpgIn addition to operating the doors from inside the cockpit, thisoption allows you to do the same thing but from a graphicalwindow. One word of caution; whilst I found clicking on thecorresponding door text opened or closed the door, clicking on theactual door (as I did by accident), would remove it completely. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-07.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-08.jpg Cockpit And StartupFor a helicopter, and particularly a vintage one such as the Huey, the sight of numerous switches and dials will (for many), cause quitea bit of confusion. However, once familiarised, everything becomes alot easier...and dare I say...almost second nature. Both the cockpit and overhead panel of the Huey were explained infull detail by the supplied user manual. By utilising the suppliedchecklist, setting up for takeoff was relatively simple, with theprocedure being the following: /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-17.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-15.jpgPre Start (Overhead Panel)Rotary AC Power switch to 'AC Phase'Inverter Off (On after Startup)Main Gen OnVM Rotary To 'Ess Bus'Starter Gen Off (On after Startup)Non Ess Bus Off (On After Startup)Battery On /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-11.jpgIn reality, all the above, with the exception of the batteryswitch, are in their correct positions by default. Pre Start (Main Panel)There were only a small number of adjustments to deal with on themain panel before start up. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-08.jpgForce Trim OnHydraulic Control OnPre Start (Center Console) /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-04.jpgFuel OnGovernor Switch AutoStartup ProcedureAfter completing the pre start checks, I found the 'gas producer'gauge which would tell me when the single engine has completed itsstartup procedure. I held down the assigned starter key ('e' in mycase) while watching the gas producer gauge until it reached 80%. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/nimbus-uh1h-huey-details-02.jpgAfter reaching this figure, the starter was released and theunmistakable sound of the Huey bursting into life filled my ears. Ithen used the mouse wheel to control RPM by rotating the throttle tothe left. Once full throttle was achieved, I turned on the fourswitches on the overhead bottom right and checked the warning lightsfor any issues. HandlingThe flight characteristics of the Huey are modelled exceptionallywell, meaning that all the noises, rattles and vibrations associatedwith the real helicopter are present. Due to the lack of an autopilot, the handling can be tricky for novices, but as they say in life,'practice makes perfect', and that very much sums up the Huey. If youcan confidently fly the Nimbus Huey with no aids, then I think you'dbe good to go on any X-Plane helicopter. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-09.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-10.jpgAs you pull up on the collective and gently takeoff, ensure thetorque effect of the rotor is compensated for by applying a smallamount of left rudder control (this helps in keeping the Hueystraight). One additional feature of the Huey I really enjoyed was the abilityto fire the waist guns when the side doors were open. A small detailbut having grown up with iconic images of the Huey in action, it wasnice to see that it included. The modelling of the crew and passengersis also quite exceptional. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-11.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-12.jpgConclusionHaving spent a considerable amount of time exploring all thevirtues of the Nimbus Huey, I have to say I came away highlyimpressed. For many, the Huey is forever cemented in aviation historyas one of the most iconic helicopters ever built, and whilst this isonly a simulated model, it is clear to see why. Visually it is superbwith great detailing throughout, and the included sounds only add tothe incredible atmosphere. Nimbus Simulations in my mind have done anincredible job with the Huey, and as such, this model comes highlyrecommended. /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-13.jpg /images/reviews/nimbhuey/t/nimbus-uh1h-huey-14.jpgPaul Mort Purchase Nimbus UH-1 Huey
