Recommended Posts

Yes it is. I've read different posts that peeps have done it, just not sure of the HOW part, but it can be done.

I don’t know how you move it from one drive to another (although others have done it)

But you can easily install it to a different drive & most people recommend it. When you install flight sim, the initial download from the MS Store goes onto your C drive. You launch the sim & it’ll say you need to install the main core of the sim.. something like 90GB - the default installation path will be showing.. instead you need to browse to a different location.. ie: your other drive

It will then install to your other drive.

Confirming g7rta's post. The initial installation package will be placed in your USERS folder. on your C drive. You will also use that path (C:/) for installing anything to the Community folder (Aircratft, airports, scenery, etc.). For the Core installtion, it will also create a microsoft.flightsim_8weky... folder, on that drive. So strangely you will have 2 places where there's that same folder (8weky), but the bulk of the asobo and msfs cfg/blg files will go to your designated installation drive.

MSFS will take up about 11-13gb on your C drive, and up to 130-150 gb on your installation drive.

Like most people, Windows is on my C: drive

When I installed MSFS, I used my G: drive (it’s an M.2+SSD)

I’m only using it for the new sim. Nothing else.

The installation created a handful of folders.. including my community folder. It put it on the same drive.

G:\MSFS\Community - that’s it. It’s so easy to find.

The official folder is G:\MSFS\Official - again very easy to find.

My installation from the Microsoft Store was directed by me to Drive D: and installed in a folder named WpSystem. The path to Community is D:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-163.......\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft\.FlightSimulator_wekybdbbwe\Packages\Community. Not so easy to find.

Steve ...

Windows is ALWAYS the C: drive. Thats they way it installs.

Art...

Check your C:\Users\{your name}\App Data\Local\Packages... You'll find the "MicrosoftFlightSimulator_8weky3d8bbwe" folder... in there, under "LocalCache\Packages" you'll find the Community folder. You can install add-ons there and it moves/copies it to your installation drive.

If you activate the developers mode, one of the options is to view the install path. Even tho you installed it on a non-C: drive...it will have the path to the Community folder on the C: drive. Much easier to get to.

You're right, developer mode does show the path.

I didn't know that, cheers.

I realize there is a path to the community folder thru C: drive, but the actual folder is on D: drive. Either path is a lot more complicated than G:\MSFS\Community. Developers Mode only shows the C: path on my computer.

Hi Art,

It’s strange how MSFS seems to install differently on various systems. When I installed it, I actually think I first created the folder “MSFS” on my G drive & set it to install there. Maybe that’s why the folders are placed like that.

Anyway, I shall be reinstalling it all tomorrow, including Windows (new computer setup coming :) )

It looks like all you need is a new motherboard and CPU.

Yep, that’s pretty much it. Already on route via DPD.

There’s a new motherboard, CPU & a 1000w PSU (ready for should I ever upgrade the GPU) all ready in a new case. I’ll need to transfer my M.2 drives & the RTX2080ti..oh and I bought 64gb of DDR4 too. Once it’s all in, then fun of installing begins :)

See title text. I like to install on a new SSD

I installed it all off of drive C:

MSFS Install.jpg

Prepar3D has you put add-ons in the Documents folder, which can become quite large. Windows allows you to move it, so I put it on D: (This is also where MSFS saves files to)

Prior to installing MSFS, Windows allows the installation of WindowsApps where you want, so I also put it on D: This also created a Program Files (Which is empty) and WpSystem folder.

When I installed MSFS, the pre-install app went into the WindowApps folder. Then when it starts you can choose where to install the main folder. Forgive my anal retentive MSFS folder name, I can't help it :)

Once installed, MSFS allows you to specify where to put the cache, which I put on my WD HDD G:

Gigabyte GA-X99 Gaming G1, i7-5960X, Noctua NH-D14, Crucial Ballistix Elite 64Gb, Nvidia GTX Titan X, Creative ZxR, Ableconn PEXM2-130, WD Black SN750 250Gb & 2Tb NVMe/Gold 10Tb HDD, Sony BDU-X10S BD-ROM, PC Power & Cooling 1200w, Cosmos C700M, Noctua iPPC 140mm x6, Logitech M570/K800, WinX64 7 Ultimate/10 Pro

reading all those complaints, whereof lotst are true; the cause of some could be bad programming.

Old member of the Dutch magazin "Computertotaal" I read once that lots of trouble was caused by that.

When programming some for windows, it has to be programmed by the rules off Microsoft.

That does not always happen.

That is the main reason why i use "INSTANT RECOVERY" from Raxco.com.

You can use that prgr for lots of things, but also for installing 10 times windows 10 or other windows if you like.

So, i always have a blank or Empty windows 10 installed and backitup on my harddisk.

When installing and using a new big prgr, i got a copy of that empty windows 10 (named snapshot) into my 512 GB SSD and install and try the prgrs.

When no problems i installed perhaps on my regular windows 10 snapshot.

On this moment i have 3 times snapshots of windows 10 and used 272 GB.

i have room plenty.

and exporting of a snapshot takes not so long.

so what i did with the new Sim, was importing a empty windows 10 snapshot ( about 20 GB) , update it and then install my 10 DVD's.

After that more windows 10 updates and after that MSFS upates.

when ready and playeda while i did make quickly a export of THAT windows 10 on harddisk.

There are a few prgrs more on that windows 10 liKe: TOTAL Commander" and mozilla thunderbird, and whatsapp, and roboform. That's about it.

So, by this i can circumvent lots of potential prgrs with perhaps hidden errors.

i see ,i must rename Fs2000 in FS 2020
