An Aircraft From Days Gone Bye! 1983 Douglas DC-8

Recommended Posts

Wow, as a passenger, you'd almost need a pair of roller blades to get from the rear of the aircraft to the front! This bad boy is long! 189 passengers, probably wasn't that fuel efficient. No wonder they went with the newer, more efficient, carries more passengers, 2 engine aircraft! She's still a beauty, regardless of negatives!

oh yes Rick, the DC-8 is a beauty. I have it from Just Flight, and am contemplating buying the Aerosoft version. From the looks of those engines in your screenshot, this is a late model with turbofans, which means its not as bad with fuel consumption as you make it out to be. I remember reading an article once on Flying magazine about the HS-125 700 (TFE-731 turbofan engine) saying it burns on economic cruise the same amount of fuel the original RR Viper turbojet engined variant (HS-125 series 100 thru 600) burns on ground idle!

Khalid - I should have worded it differently. yes, they have made great strides in improving fuel efficiency! What I was talking about, was carrying 189 passengers using 4 engines, when in todays commercial airline industry, they are accomplishing the same thing with only 2 engines! Yes, they are still flying 4 engine aircraft, but the are carrying twice as many passengers! The Airbus 340 and 380 are a couple examples.

They're all good, it's just a matter of what can give the airlines a "bigger bang for their buck!"
